I remember really liking the movie Time Bandits when I was a kid. Well I got a chance to watch it this weekend and boy did it not holdup at all. I found myself fast forwarding thru a lot of it.

Anyone else have old favorites that you have re-visited later on, only to be disappointed?

I feel that way about a number of television shows, in particular, A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard and Knight Rider. I used to be the biggest fan of those shows, and boy are they god-awful.

I saw some of Hitchcock's The Birds the other day and i wound up screaming at the tv due to the awful script.

There's ten people standing around including two cops and they're standing 3 feet away from a gushing gas hose BUT nobody has a fucking concern about it as they're keeping their attention on something stupid.

Then they just get attacked by a few hundred thousand birds, killing people, poking their eyes out and so what does the main two characters do? They start walking/strolling up the hill about a quarter mile to a schoolhouse...

horrible

on the A-team (which I loved) where did all their bullets go? Not one of them richocted (SP?) off of anything. And they always were always able to build things. Knight Rider, the car drove on water? was it the Jesus mobile? Remember the BAD KITT, KARR? the front light was yellow.

A-Team is still okay in my book. I had a huge crush on "Face" when I was like... 4.
i agree, Happy Days was a greta show, but to watch it now, it seems so hookey and goody goody. the best episode is when Richie slapped the Fonz.

Some great t.v. moments.

For me, hands down, the show I hate, hate, hate now that I one time actually enjoyed is Friends

These are no friends of mine!

Actually, somewhere in mid-run, when it became more "sit" and less "com" is when it started to lose me. Rehashing the same stories; making characters dumber and less likable the longer it went; stunt casting. At one time I got caught up in the show like a lot of people, but now if i see even a rerun that I remember kind of liking, i will flee like a scared bunny. The show really pales in comparrison to Seinfeld, which I could watch 24 hours a day still.

I also hate every single thing about American Idol. I was actually on board the first two seasons - never a HUGE fan- never actually voted or even had a favorite - I just thought it was a well put together live show, Simon cracked me up, and I enjoyed the hell out of Reuben. But half way into season 3 i started getting bored, and even now, even with the whole "worst singer" tryouts in the beginning that most people agree is still the best part, i can't stand it. I wish this show would go far, far away.

Here's one more, from the world-o-movies - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

First movie I ever saw in a movie theatre - one i loved as a little kid - one i loathed when i saw as a college student, because of how long and ponderous it was. Especially annoying compared to "Willy Wonka," which did hold up for me. I may go full circle on it, though, since it's been about 20 years since then, but the bad taste is still there.

First post on the board, but why not leave it here...

Some things that don't hold up well from my childhood:

- Thundercats. Was so close to buying the dvds, and caught an episode first. Still love the creepy background music, but it's uninteresting as a show.

- Married with Children. I think this could be from seeing the reruns so many times, but I've caught a few on F/X recently and they couldn't hold my attention.

- Get a Life: I remember watching this steaming pile every Sunday night. What the hell was I thinking???

And since I'm talking about old FOX sitcoms, anyone else out there a big fan of Herman's Head?

If you're a child of the 70's like me and ever get a chance to watch "Welcome Back Kotter" again - DON'T!

I loved it as a kid, but holy jumpin' Jesus is it awful. I caught an episode a while back on either TV Land or Nick at Nite and it was quite possibly the worst piece of shit ever sent through the airwaves.

M*A*S*H Absolutely loved it when I was a teenager. Now it seems melodramatic, corny, and preachy.

Disney movies.

What was I thinking?
Seconded. I think there was a time when I watched Aladdin every day after school. Now I can't get through five seconds of that movie.

The only one that I think I'd still love would be 101 Dalmations. Just overall a great fucking movie.

Spaceballs didn't hold up at all and I was crushed when I watched it recently. On the other hand, Mel Brooks' other flicks have held up much better, especially Blazing Saddles, which killed during "White Trash Night" last week - hot dogs, chile, creamed corn, french fries and beer smuggled in from Saudi Arabia.

Just overall a great fucking movie.
While there are some of those movies I do think are shit, I actually think most of the Disney animated that came out in the late 80s through the mid-1990s hold up pretty well - Mermaid - Hunchback, but I was an adult when I saw them and didn't have a kid's perspective (except for my godsons who loved any piece of crap put in front of them). You gotta give that shit a lot of time to revist. One of the reasons little kids and teens watch and rewatch the same movies ad-nausium is because it is something that they can control - the rest of their lives are, for the most part, out of their hands, but a movie or a book or a television show rerun they know the ending to is comforting. Even as adults, if you are going through a stressful situation, there's nothing better than a reliable movie you know by heart.
