Take a look at the way the brackets are layed out!

What a FUCKING joke!! If you know absolutely nothing about FIFA, an idiot could probably pick who will come out of each group!

Group A - Germany takes it outright.

Group B - England. Cake Walk.

Group C - Argentina for the win. Serbia may cause a slight stir.

Group D - Actually pretty competitive. Mexico over Iran in the end.

Group E - Italy, with a little bit of trouble from U.S.! We are not getting out of this one outright. Hopefully points will carry us to the next round

Group F - Brazil, with Croatia making a run.

Group G - France!

Group H - Spain. Outright. Ukraine makes a rumble though.

I usually love this shit, but the first round seems pretty lopsided. I will be watching Univision, and listening on my XM radio anyway.

after the 1st round is done, we are looking at some GREAT matches!!

As long as the Ref's don't fuck us like last World Cup!

The cool thing is that most of the games will be at watchable times this go round
You know what, fuck my previous enthusiasm, I should have learned. Anything Team USA-related in team sports is cursed and destined to fail miserably. I'm not getting myself involved in this crap again.

If you are a fan, they are all watchable!

I remember the abortion of a match. Ireland vs Spain. The ref's blew the thing twice, and and Ireland was eliminated.

Appprox. 2:30 a.m.

Waking up for work at 6:15 a.m.

Love the World Cup!

I'll pull out my England scarf, but like every other fucking timel they'll come up short. As usual, it's Brazil's to lose. I've seen a lot of soccer in my life, Pele, Georgie Best, Maradonna (as much as it pains me to list him), Beckenbauer, Cruyff, but I have never, never seen anyone do what Ronaldinho does with a ball.
Only the top team from each group moves on? So if Italy wins, what will the US need to do in order to move on?
blakjeezis
03-28-2006, 06:32 AM

It's actually the top 2 in each group that go through, so Blowhard you can still advance even after we whup your ass, or arse, as the case may be. Although you do have to keep an eye out for Paraguay, those slippery South American fucks can surprise you.

The US got a tough draw. Obviously you have Italy, the Czech Rep is no slouch and there always seems to be one African team that does well. Why not Ghana.

I don't know, though, I like these groups on the whole. After the top team in each group, for the most part you can make cases for a lot of the runners up. I mean, Group A you have Germany, and then who? Could be Poland, could be Ecuador. I'll take Ecuador, for Bronx Johnny,

And like I said for B, Paraguay will snake up on ya. That'll be England and them.

C - I hate to pick Argentina for anything other than wiping off the face of the Earth, so I won't. I'll take Serbia and the Netherlands.

D - Portugal and the Republic of WhoGivesaFuck. I guess Mexico.

E - Italy, I know shocking, and hmmmm, I don't think the US has got it in them this time, for all the strides they made last time, this is still a country that thinks Alexei Lalas has even a shred of soccer credibility whatsoever on or off the field, so I'll take the Czechs for #2.

F - Hmmm, Croatia and Australia ... no. Brazil and, I'm gonna pick the Japs.

G - After France, I get a little blurry. I haven't picked my African team yet, but I'm thinking Tunisia in H. I already have Japan, so SoKo would make 2 Asian teams going through. But Switzerland? Chocolates? Sure. A clock? Absolutely. But World Cup? Hmmmmm, could it be Togo? If I was looking for a sandwich maybe Togo, but not here. I'll take South Korea, but they'll go out in the 2nd round when Chan Ho Park blows yet another save.

edit: Not Chan Ho Park. That other fuck, I can't think of his name. The one on the D'Backs who blew those 2 saves against the Yankees in the World Series. I guess it doesn't matter. The joke's dead already. Not that it had much life to begin with.

H - Spain and I like the Ukraine in this one, but I'm going with Tunisia for the dark continent's rep.

So, in short, A - Germany, Ecuador. B - England, Paraguay. C - Serbia, Netherlands. D - Portugal, Ron Mexico. E - Italy, Czech Republic. F - Brazil, Japan. G - France, South Korea. H - Spain, Tunisia. If yopu wanna do NCAA Brackets, the rest of the games are here: http://eur.i1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/i/eu/fifa/fwc061.pdf

Theres no doubt in my mind that the United States is one of the top 16 teams in the world and it sucks that groups G and H are cakewalks compared to Group E. You could very well put any team from G or H, excluding Spain and France, stick them in Group E and they would Is there any rhyme or reason to how the groups are organized? Because I don't really see a pattern or something.

Im gonna miss the Republic...it just won't be a World Cup without the Irish. Personally I think they were screwed.....Israel is not in Europe, I refuse to accept that the Irish can get lower in qualifiers than a team that isn't even on their continent. Fooie

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Less than three weeks before the World Cup, the U.S. soccer team opened its final warmup series with a key injury and a loss.
U.S. captain Claudio Reyna strained a hamstring early in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Morocco, which got a 90th-minute goal from Mohamed Madihi after defender Steve Cherundolo lost the all to Bouchaib El Moubarki.
"It's close to the games. Obviously not the best timing," Reyna said, "but I hope I've gotten away with something very minor. That's what we're optimistically thinking. I don't think it's going to be long-term, but again, tomorrow I'll know better once it calms down."

Time to make some money stickeyfingers. Actually, you could probably do well to bet on all the underdogs to make it to the knockout round because the odds are weighted heavily to the European teams. Thats where the money is coming from.

Let's give a major header of thanks to XM radio for covering the World Cup. I just finished listening to the Netherlands 1st round game. IT was fantastic. The in-studio coverage is informative and entertaining. Now, regardless of what you soccer elitist/snobs say, we need MLS on XM ASAP! DC United should be heard as well as seen every game. Great job XM. Another reason other than R&F to pay the monthly fee!

I really could have done without that one commentator pondering what the Iranian team thought about the holocaust as they were in Nuremberg. I don't need to be thinking about that shit when I'm watching sports for one, and what the Iranian President thinks probably doesn't affect what the members of the team think.
I just got back from Panama this afternoon and it's such a huge fever down there, I suppose that is the way it is in the rest of the world besides here in the USA.

Everywhere you go it's almost 100% world cup. We were in the city and it seemed like every other person had on a jersey from some country. We watched the games in the apartment we were staying in and when a goal was scored (especially the Argentina game) you would here people all over yell, even across the street. Every billboard looked World Cup related, the TV station playing the game has nothing but World Cup related commercials. The resturants play nothing but the games. Everyone we were with from the 70 year old grandmother to the 11 year old cousins, they are all excited about the games. We went to two of the malls in the city and most of the stores are selling World Cup gear, when you walk in to some of the sports stores they hand you World Cup time sheet / score card things/

Then I come home and no one knows anything about it. There's hardly a mention anywhere. I am sad.

I can't wait for next weekend when I can watch more of the games.
I was thoroughly unimpressed with England's play, although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised as underwhelming is usually the best description of their performance. After the first 20 minutes of the first half they played sloppy, uninspired, lazy football and were lucky to come away with three points. After the break there was no midfield play to speak of and they may as well have been playing with 10 men for all the good Beckham was. He basically camped out on the right wing and waited for the ball. There was little to no team harmony and they looked like a bunch of strangers out there. Owen barely touched the ball, Crouch whined evey time he got a call against him. Okay you're a tall bastard and get whistled unfairly at times because of it, but move on.

The only real high point was Joe Cole and the defense, although I think Eriksson should pull Neville for the next game and put in Carragher in his place. That being said the defense is solid; I don't think we have to worry about a lot of goals against. Hopefully Rooney can get in a match sooner than later and add a much needed spark to a really, really lifeless squad.

So England made it through to the second round with a less than scintillating victory over T&T. Eh, again an underwhelming game. There were a few moments after Lennon and Rooney came on that they flashed something that looked almost like spirit, but for the most part they were flat and looked like they were out for an afternoon stroll. Beckham is old and overrated. Any professional player should be able to do what he does. Wow, a free kick directly into the wall. Oooooh look, a corner that swings in towards the goal.

I've seen alot of free kicks in the tourney and I havent seen any consistantly placed right where it should be the way Beckham's were. Granted the world cup is the only time I really watch soccer, but from the bit I've seen, Beckham just looks like a far better and more consistant ball striker then pretty much everyone else I've watched.

People in Trinidad are calling it the Hand of Crouch

Contact fouls happen all the time, some are intentional, some accidental. Some are called, some aren't. Sometimes fouls are called that aren't fouls. It happens. It's part of the game. If what Maradona had done was push Shilton to the ground or some other bang-bang type of play and it wasn't called, eh, what are you gonna do? I would have no complaint; that's football. If I got pissed about every goal that resulted from a late tackle or a pulled jersey, well, there wouldn't be much time for anything else.

Intentionally handling the ball to gain an advantage or to score or prevent a goal is deceitful, cheating, and violates the very spirit of the game. That's why they send people off for doing it. Couple that with Maradona's post game attitude, and the fact that he is a despicable human being on pretty much every other level and what have you got? A gigantic fuck you.

And Hottub, I don't want to turn this into a Falklands discussion. Let's show a little decorum and class please.

Yeah, Northern Ireland has a team. I think they actually beat England one game in qualifying. There was talk of making a UK team in 2000 but nothing became of that. Scotland has way too much national pride to partcipate in that.

England hasn't been able to beat Sweden since 1968. I'm sure giving up the tying goal in the 90th minute must be killing our British members.

If I was Joe Cole I would punch David Beckham in the vagina for having the audacity, the unmitigated gall to put that captain's armband on before every game. In his entire life, the closest David Beckham has come to a set of balls is when they've been bouncing off his chin. Joe Cole, since the beginning of this tournament, has placed this team squarely on his back and carried them to the finish of every game, and today was no exception. He played brilliantly and scored one of the better goals you will ever see. The only other players who looked like they gave a shit were Crouch, who showed intermittent flashes, and Ashley Cole who, let's be honest, is pathetic, but at least he was trying. Oh yeah, and Lampard swung his foot in the general direction of the ball occasionally. And can Wayne Rooney calm down please? You wanna throw a hissy fit when you leave the pitch, fine, do something when you're still on it. All the theatrics and the boot throwing impress me precisely ZERO! And Paul Robinson?!? You're going to start applauding the fans after the game?!? Why, because they weren't throwing the D Cells your peformance warranted at you? You should be fucking ashamed of yourself. Next time, hang your head and leave the pitch before you create an even more embarrassing spectacle of yourself than you already have.

This shit is not going to fly in the second round.

This tournament has been riddled with awful officiating. FIFA really needs to get these refs under control for the up coming rounds. It's seriously starting to infringe on the game. Players are pulling out of tackles, afraid to go after the ball because they're getting cards. It's unbelievable. That call against Gooch was deplorable.

is it normal for players not to look at the ref when they're being booked?

I think it's a mix of things. First of all, the referee has to get the number off the player's jersey. Traditionally, the number is on the back, although sometimes it is on the front as well. SO, in times past when the game was still civilkized, the ref would call the player over and ask him to turn around to get his number. Second, and a more recent development, along with the players actually grabbing and touching the referee while crying and pleading their case (a move perfected by the Italians), by showing their back to the ref and walking away, a player is showing disrespect to the ref and his decision, but if the ref triesd to say anything, he can just say he was allowing the ref to see his number. Third, and the most recent development, because cards are given out at an absolutely ridiculous rate, roughly one every 16 seconds, during these game it's no longer a big deal like it used to be, so the player simply shrugs and walks away.

The US is hated all over the world. I thought there were some incredibly questionable calls in the US/Italy game, and today put it over the top for me. I really think the odds are stacked against us. That gatorade commercial is pretty much on the mark. Although i'd expect officials to call the game down the middle, but with 4 minutes to go in the game, i haven't seen that yet.

Also another reason why soccer stinks is all the "injuries" these guys get. Cmon, these guy are probably the most fit athletes in the world, you would think they got hit by a bus everytime they take a "fall".

I prefer to think of Brazil as the Ghana of South America.

That referee was absolute crap, there were some really, really dubious calls. But King, they did go both ways. I mean the penalty was atrocious, but there were non-fouls called against Ghana as well and the US did get away with a couple of things that should have been called and then some. It's strange. It seems like the passions of the referees swing wildly back and forth. At some points in the game, you can't even stand close to an opponent without getting a card, and at others it seems as if you could stick your boot in his ass and the ref would call "play on."

Too bad for the US. They played admirably, particularly at the end of this game where they showed a lot of heart. I'm not sure Bruce Arena understands the game 100%; some of his substitution decisions are a little suspect. I'm also not entirely sure he's straight. I guess it's sort of irrelevant, but there's something a little, I dunno, McGreevey about him.

Landon Donovan is a pussy. He's afraid of everything and everybody on the field, including the ball. He and David Beckham should get a place together after the Cup is over. They can wax each others' asses and discuss Donovan's lighbulb head.

2 things, what exactly is an "international cap"

and why do they take their jerseys off after the game? do they swap with the player they played against?

Way, way back in the old days, like the 1800s, when a player was selected to play for a team they would literally be given a cap. I think it was because they didn't have standardized jerseys back then so you would only know who was on your team by the color of their cap. Fucking stupid if you ask me, although I guess it's probably cheaper to have a whole pile of the same caps made rather than a whole pile of the same jerseys. Anyway, so for each game, the players would be given a cap, so however many caps they had, that's how many games they'd played for that team. Over time, the actual cap has fallen out of use but the term still remains. It just means the number of games a player has played for a team. Like, let's just say, Beckham has 108 caps for England, meaning he's played in 108 games for the side.

Yeah, I wish the chick teams had exchanged jerseys too, Amy. That would have indeed been awesome.

If a player receives a red card or two yellows, they are ejected and cannot be replaced. Each team has 3 subs. If all subs are used and a player gets injured then the team must play shorthanded.
