Did we chase any refs off the field yet?

I was flipping between the Yankees and the NASCAR race, but when I turned on the NED-POR game, I heard the announcers just absolutely BLASTING the referees. What happened now?

The ref lost control of the game, plain and simple. At one point it seemed like he was just handing out yellow cards on every foul. 16 in total for the game, tied a World Cup record. And the two teams got as close as I've ever seen to a soccer fight two times. It was a very physical game, and the ref tried to tone it down way too late. And they missed a bunch of calls too. A Netherlands got literally dropkicked in the chest in the box and it wasn't called. Figo got away with headbutting one of the Netherlands players. It was so bad, it looked like the ref was out to give cards for any reason. He gave out two very cheap yellow cards for delay the were completely unwarranted. And the game ended up at either 9 on 9 or 9 on 8. 4 or 5 ejections. The whole game was a clusterfuck, I just enjoyed it on a "watching a train wreck" level. This guy made the ref of the US-Italy game look good. At one point the FIFA ref on the sidelines had to restrain the Portugal bench and order them all back to their seats.

On a sidenote, a guy on Portugal can dropkick a guy in the chest in his own box and no penalty kick. And they call that joke of a penalty kick in the US-Ghana game. Yeah, I'm not bitter.

There is no surer sign that a ref has lost control of a game than cards being handed out left and right. A good ref should be able to control the players without issuing a single unnecessary card. Now, unfortunately I didn't get to see most of the match, but from what I understand it was rough, but not 20 cards rough. And Figo is not out of the woods yet. FIFA can review the tape and ban him from the next game or more if they see fit. That would be a shame.

That was easily one of the roughest games I've seen in some time. I don't feel the that the way the game went was the fault of the ref really. It seemed to me that he was trying to get a handle on the game. I'm not a fan of giving out yellow and red cards though for this particular game with everything that happened I'm surprised more players weren't given red cards.

Wow, they are killing that ref on the front page of every site I've checked out. I think it all stemmed from that first foul commited on C. Ronaldo, that was a vicious tackle that could've broken that pretty-boy's leg. The sad thing is that could be the end of Figo's international career, DeRossi from Italy got a 4 game international suspension for his elbow on McBride. Costinhas red was totally waranted but Deco's second yellow was an absolute joke. Yet all those cards didn't keep Holland from scoring, they just blew all their opportunities and left Van Nistelrooy on the bench. I agree with the guy who said the players should be accountable for their behavior and stop blaming the refs, exept for the refs in the last two US games.
I'm not sure what else the ref could do. The players were crazy. These were not ticky tack fouls for the most part. You're supposed to deter fouling by punishing the players but they kept making late tackles. And leave the ball alone Deco when you have a yellow. How is all the bad behaviour not the players' fault? They are responsible for their actions not the ref.

There was alot of time wasting going on by Portugal but I don't think you give a player like Deco a second yellow for that, make your point with another player.
Both sides are undisciplined. Shame on Figo for losing his cool, and Deco for that inexcusable brain cramp of getting a 2nd yellow for delay of game. And I am a Portugal fan. They will beat England, and upset Brazil if they can keep their composure and C Ronaldo is fit to play. Portugal's coach Scolari has already won one world championship with Brazil. His total revamping of Portugal's team philosphy and player selection has made Portugal a real threat to make it to the finals. Blaming the refs for that chaos in todays game is like blaming the police when a riot breaks out. Unfair and inaccurate.

This message was edited by Rockvillejoe on 6-25-06 @ 11:37 PM
The three worst offenses I saw today didn't even get fouls, and then they send someone off for a delay of game? The refs are there to control the players, and this guy had no control whatsoever. To play off your analogy, if this guy were a cop in a riot, he'd be arresting somebody for littering while people were being murdered and raped all around him.
He can't call what he doesn't see. Your criticism is unrealistic. There are 23 cameras recording every move on the pitch and sidelines. Good for us. It allows us to sit here and criticize every missed call. Keep in mind that while Figo was head butting, the ref was focused on booking someone else. If you want to blame someone, blame Figo for acting like a petulant 8 year old. Fifa will review the play and believe me there will be sanctions on Figo. Hopefully not a game suspension. There should also be some concern that those players issued a red card could have their suspensions extended for 2 games. In this case the ref did as good a job as humanly possible. And by the way, I never tire of that ice skater opening her mouth like she does.

That was terrible. I guess it wouldn't have been so bad if the ref hadn't pussied out of calling that handball in the box on, whatever his name is, the Italian right back, like 2 minutes earlier down the other end. Ah well, those are the breaks. At least I never have to hear the term 'socceroos' again.

It offers the best domestic play, flowing beer, and a lot of young babes walking around. The environment is fanatastic. Having attended Man U and Fulham games in England, I can tell you that the fan level is not as intense over here. Over there, when the ball is played in the hometowns offensive 3rd of the field, you can sense with palpible energy that something good is about to happen. The crowd becomes louder, and goosebumps literally appear on the arms. In DC, there is more of a party atmsophere in the stands. There are crazy, loyal, knowledable fans as well. I haven't been to a Red Bulls game in NJ, but if it is anything like DC United, you should have a lot of fun, with above decent quality, professional soccer. Definitely worth the $16.

He was off-sides. He was in the box before the ball was.

In order for a player to be on side he has to be either behind the ball, or there must be at least two opposing players or one field player and the goalie between him and the endline when the ball is played. You have to play well enough that the referees's decisions don't matter. Unfortunately this was the first game that England actually played decent and they took it to penalties. They took some really bad penalties, obviously they were tired. Lampard hasn't smelled a goal since day one so I don't know why he was taking the first one, but it is what it is. They can go home and Ericsson can retire and maybe next time they won't leave the spirit behind.

I don't know why Ericsson insisted on that 4-5-1 nonsense, Rooney needed someone up front with him for support. Ehh, you can second guess until the cows come home, but in the end you have to win the games, and they didn't.

It's worse than that, actually, beyond even someone who's never played the sport. He sounds like someone who's never seen or heard of it before and just walked off the street and strapped on a mic and headset. I'm more enraged by him than the loss.

The American commentators in general are pretty bad. I guess they just don't have the knack for the game. They get way too involved in talking about strategy and the refs and all this bullshit that a, doesn't matter and b, they're usually wrong about, so they end up just sounding like uninformed slackjaws. They should just stick to calling the action and give the other shit a rest.

I've been saying for a while now that Germany was going to win it all, but I think Zidane, who controlled basically that entire match today, is going to lead the Frogs to the cup and retire on top with the rest of the world wanting more.

Fuck Portugal's flop fest, it was ridiculous.

It was ridiculous, and has been all tourney. Their behavior has been at worst despicable and at best clownish. As the phrase goes, the fish stinks from the head, and Scolari is a fucking bum. The team is a reflection of the coach's personality. Hence, England plays with no heart or balls. I was very glad Portugal lost. Germany has a really, really good team, full of exciting, young players. People talk about Wayne Rooney and C. Ronaldo being the best young players in the world, but Lahm, Podolski, Schweinsteiger, and Hanke, who although didn't play very much is a hell of a player, could all give the both of them a run foir their money. Talk about the team reflecting the coach, Klinsman was a class act on the pitch and his team reflects that now. They play good, clean, aggressive, fun and exciting football. Really a delight to watch, the most pleasant surprise of the tournament. If Klinsman sticks around they will be a heavy threat in Euro '08 and South Africa '10.

Another really nice surprise has been the Italians. Ordinarily I hold them just above Argentina on the rage-o-meter. But I did think they played really well against Germany and held their theatrics to a minimum. Their league is going through a tough time right now, and a majority of the Italian squad has comported themselves with class. I can't help but like Cannavaro, he's a hell of a player, Gattusso as well. If they play again like they played against Germany, we should be in for a great Final.

As far as France goes, what can you say? It's been all about Zidane, Ribery, Sagnol, and Vierra for the most part. Henry has ben a ghost, playihg a very lazy, disinterested game. I don't know why. I'm expecting a good game, and this could be the match that turns Ribery into a superstar. I'm really high on the melty-faced, son of a bitch.

So that's it, I won't predict a winner, (okay, I'll take Italy) and I wouldn't mind seeing either team win. For all the awful officiating, and yellow cards and England's piss-poor performance, it has been a very good tournament. Goals were down, but the goals that were scored were consistently better than a lot of the previous tournaments'. I guess the lighter ball made a difference. I want to thank you all for the fun, jawboning and shit-talking back and forth, it only enhances the good time. Gvac, I'm glad you've finally come around to the beautiful game. Not to try and sour you, but when you do watch some of the national leagues, EPL, La Liga, or Serie A included, you will see a dropoff in the quality of play. Do not let it stop you though. The games are just as fun and exciting.

Alright. I guess I'll see you in 2 years for Euro '08!

I am absolutely speechless. What the fuck would make Zidane, who as far as I know has always been a consumate professional on and off the field, just completely lose his shit like that? I am shocked to say the least. Unfortunate to end his career in that way. His legacy will be tarnished. Instead of remembering 2 against Brazil in '98 and this run, it will always be about that headbutt that probably cost France the Cup. I mean, Italy really weren't in the match for most of the overtime. I think if Zidane had stayed on, France would have won. Just a bizarre way to end a tournament and a career.

And I really think they should do something about the penalties in the Final. For the rest of the games it's okay, but it leaves a sour tastre in my mouth when it all ends in a shootout. I think maybe they should just end it after overtime and have a replay, either a day or two days later. Then, only if necessary, they should go to penalty kicks. It's a shame, I think, that it should come down to just 1 player and the goalie.

A listener called in to say he saw on the internet that apparently Italy's Matterazi made a racial slur towards Zidane and his arab background, that supposedly is what was said to drive him over the edge to do what he did. While if it is true that Matterazi said something offensive, it should still have been something that Zidane should have taken off the field...not in this venue or with so much at stake in the game...especially since it was his last game. He should have shrugged it off and kicked his ass after the game.

I learned the rules (offsides is still a fucking guess most of the time though) and got into the whole thing a little more. Being an overall sports fan though, the shootout for the world title is a fucking joke. The Italians, even minus Zidane, barely got to the French half of the field after the first 30 minutes of play. They need to at least move the ball back a few feet and give the goalie a little more chance at stopping the shot. The goalie has no choice but to read the player and guess, not react really. Terrible way to end a World Cup. Just think, the Americans tied those Italian bastards even amidst some horid calls! USA, USA, USA! Oh yah, nevermind.

"I hate sports, be nice to women, blah bla blah"

Fuck Moe and his stupid deathMeatl Bull Shit.........VIVA AL ITALIA

David Wright for President!!!

I'm can't believe what I read, twice.

Knowing Zidane and the situation about it being his last game and all, the first thought that went through my head was, "What the fuck made him do that?" There is no excuse for it, it was a completely unacceptable act and he got what he deserved, but he does get a little benefit of the doubt as far as motive goes because of the mitigating circumstances. Materrazzi must have done or said something just outrageous, like beyond the pale, to provoke that sort of response from Zidane. I can't think of anything that anyone could say to me in that situation that would make me totally lose my shit like that. Obviously Materazzi got the response he was looking for.

After an exhaustive study of the match video, and with the help of an Italian translator, Rees claimed that Materazzi called Zidane “the son of a terrorist whore” before adding “so just f*** off” for good measure, supporting the natural assumption that the Frenchman must have been grievously insulted.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,28783-2263995,00.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C5-k_2ZvZ4&search=bill%20buckner
