I wanted to start a new thread, so as not to take away from the "Best Drummer" thread.

OK, what is Metal?

Heavy Metal is really pretty broad to me. Anything from Poison& Cinderella, to Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, and beyond.

There are definitely niches, ie, Megadeath - Speed Metal, Lamb of God - Death Metal, Slayer - Slayer Metal, etc.

What is metal to you?

BTW, two of my favorite Metal bands are not Metal at all...

Law and Order and Kix.

Metal is so many things to so many people. It's like any form of music. You can't pin it down. Rock covers so much shit I can't even begin to talk about it.

Heavy Metal is stuff like Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Ozzy. Things like that.

Speed has been talked about and I'm not too up on it. Early Megadeth was Speed, not sure of anything else to be honest.

Death Metal is stuff like Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Skinless, Lamb of God, Hypocrisy, Death, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Slayer, Morbid Angel, etc.

Grind Metal is very early Napalm Death, Nasum, Anal Cunt.

Doom Metal is very slow stuff that I never got into enough to remember band names.

So where do you categorize the metal that I loved so much back in the day?

Ratt, Faster Pussycat, Motley CrÜe, Prong, Primus, Overkill, American Angel, etc.

I have them categorized as WSOU on my hard drive!

then what? Rock and Roll? alongside who? 3 doors down, Matchbox 20 and

would say that Coheed & Cambria from the first time I have heard
them up until now have nothing to with metal and more to do with a
crossbreed of hardcore and Rush style progressive rock.

Hawthorne
Heights whom I have only heard one song from sound like they have come
from the School of Thursday. Thursday was a great amazing fucking band
whom I will not even begin to categorize but one think they were not
was metal. Sadly, Thursday turned a once great record label in Victory
Records from its roots in hardcore to something looking only to
capitalize on the grren spawned forth by the flavour of the month
(insert screaming whining unimaginative bands name here). I mean it all
just sounds the same. Atreyu and Adien and all this shit that yes, has
a tinge of metal to it but it is such a crossbreed of everything that I
have no fucking idea WHAT to call it. Will it affect you listening to
it if it doesn't fall into a certain category? Does music have to be
wrapped up in a little bow and put in a nice little package now?

It just seems like such a hang up on what is metal and what it
not. Metal was so much more defined back in the late 80's early 90's
because there was only a few different styles of it going on. Thrash,
death, heavy, speed and glam. Some hard rock thrown in too. Then (and I
am so glad for this) when bands like Faith No More, Primus, Mother Love
Bone and the exploding Seattle scene started to take away from the
metal definition and offshoot into strange new worlds you just didn't
know what to call this alternative being that was being spawned.

Soon,
I seriously just dropped all labels because that is what (I think at
least) has gotten so many people in arguments and bickering and shit
over the years. Does it really matter if you think Hawthorne Heights is
metal or not? Or Coheed & Cambria for that matter? Does it? No. If
you think it is, if anythinks whatever band they listen to and it
doesn't jive with anyone else, who cares. I doubt you're going to enjoy
it less. Are you?

You know I don't like labels either, but you do need to keep limits on Metal.

When you call anything with a heavy guitar Metal, it cheapens Metal.

METAL is a PRIVILEGE!!! You can't just say you're Metal, there has to be guidelines.

Who gets to set those guidelines? Fans I guess. And as a fan, Hawthorne Heights is not in the same league as Metal. They should be shot into space.

So no, no one wants to limit their music with labels but again, you can't just call everything Metal so there has to be some sort of loose description of it.

Then you had your hair bands Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Poison, etc and that was supposed to be metal. I think it was when Metallica and MegaDeath came around that it started to get harded and faster. I definitely also have to also agree with Gvac and Jafter that this is the music that was considered metal when I was growing up as well. I personally really got into the hair metal bands alot. I loved Def Leppard, motley crue, Poison, Still do. To me they all kicked ass. what is considered metal I think just goes with the times. The 70's it was led zeppelin and black sabbath like jafter said. It's true that after metallica and megadeth came on the scene metal became harder and faster and I personally couldn't get into it but that was just a sign of the times I guess. every decade has it's metal genre. I personally dont care for the music that is considered metal now but that's just me. I still just prefer to rock to my 80's metal back in black, etc...
