HA! Thanks guys, but I'm far from the best at anything. I've very proud of all the accomplishments I've made over the years because it's all self taugh, never a lesson. Of course that means it took me a longer time to learn easy techniques and I'm sure I'm doing plenty wrong, but everything I do is MINE and I'm proud of all of it. Even Punchfucking Blasphemy, our debut CD.

I'll start with Stewart Copeland

I can't say he's directly influenced me at all because I don't really use anything he does in Unhallowed, and also I've only been a Police fan for a few years now. But he's a monster player, very inventive and hearing him do things makes you think about what you're doing and maybe adding some flavor here and there. Very tallented guy.

Another is the man all the way to the right in this pic. Mike Smith

I know 99% of you have no idea who SUFFOCATION is, but believe me when I tell you they ARE NY Death Metal. They are the single most copied sound in Death Metal and no one matches them at what they do. They're straight out pounding, heavy fucking Death Metal. Period. The strong, thumping drums of Mike Smith were an early influence to me personally. Guy has amazing rhythm, fast feet, great all around Metal drummer. One of the high points in my life was playing a show with Suffocation in Clifton, NJ. They showed up early to soundcheck so they were there while the openers were loading in. I got to walk up to the man, shake his hand and let him know he's a real influence to me and is one of the reasons I picked the sticks up. He was nice and we talked for a few moments. I didn't want to become a bother so I thanked him and left him alone after that.

That's one of the cool things about Death Metal being an under appreciated form of music. The band members are all regular guys still. Even though SUFFOCATION has been around for like 2 decades, toured the world numerous times and been copied to death, all the guys still walk around in the crowd, visit the merch tables and talk with fans. Very cool, not a lot of egos, especially with these guys it seems.

That's enough for now.

Lars Ulrich taught me it's not just OK to crash and snare at the same time, but that it's the goddamn law. I use it to accent different things thanks to "And Justice for All" being one of my favorite Metallica CDs.

Played drums on "Tears of a Clown".

The legend goes that when Benny died, Berry Gordy hired two drummers, sat them in the studio together, and told them to "play like Benjamin".

Huge Who fan. I'm not a drummer, but I've spoken to a few and they all say Moon had a distinct style, but technically made a lot of mistakes - even on studio albums. Love the way he rolled through fills though. Sounds good to me.

Funny thing about Moony! as awesome and crazy as he was, he was somehow unable to play 6/8. If you listen to Music must change, the rhythm is actually Townsend walking the beat on a hard floor. A few cymbals and fills were added afterward.

Also Moon and Entwistle, best rhythm section EVER! Play Quadraphenia! Entwistle invented Lead Bass!

Carlos. He plays like a machine...but with feeling.

Honorable mention to the guy who played drums on "One Headlight" by The Wallflowers. (for some reason people think it was Matt Chamberlain but, it's actually some guy named Mario Calire). NO CYMBALS. (almost) NO FILLS. ALL GROOVE.

It's very hard to do a track like that and not have it feel empty. Bravo.

One of the best lessons that I learned, and need to be reminded of from time to time, is to play what is needed and nothing more in most areas. It's much harder to look good as "A Band" than it is to stand out as a player. If all your members are hitting their parts as a unit putting about a huge wall or sound, you're a good band.

Back when I 1st picked up the drums a drummer friend of mine who had at least 10-15 years experience on my told me something I dismissed at the time:

It's much harder to hold a beat than it is to constantly change them.

At the time I was trying to play a style of Grind Metal Drums I just couldn't pull off, but I was young and thought I knew it all. Fast foward at least 6 years and I started to understand what he meant. You don't have to be going full force all the time to be a good drummer, and good players shouldn't be showboating every measure anyway. Everyone should make everyone else look good on stage.

On the same note, one of the best drummers is the gentleman who plays for AC/DC who's name escapes me at this moment. He hardly even does fills but the man is solid and keeps the rhythm together. He knows the show isn't on him but doesn't let that get to him. Just does his thing, very well, and makes the whole band looks amazing.

Phil Rudd is the man from AC/DC that you're looking for, Moe.

And yes, the man is rock steady.

Bassist Cliff Williams often just thumps one steady bass note, almost like a heartbeat, that creates an incredible amount of tension before it all explodes. I'm a HUGE fan of the "less is more" school of thought when it comes to music.

And as long as we're talking about solid drummers, you can't deny the brilliance of Charlie Watts. Sure, the Stones are no longer what they used to be, but check out any of the classic stuff and he'll blow you away.

Prince's drummer Michael Bland is fucking insane. I dont say that just becuz my email to him made his "EMAIL OF THE MONTH" on his site, but because I watched him steal the show last Fri while he was playing for Soul Asylum. His site has a cool mp3 player where you can listen to his stuff with other bands / musicians - He is also Paul Westerbergs drummer on the road - Great rock drummer! but his Jazz stuff is just twisted!

If you have some time and appreciate solid drum work check his site out and listen to his work .

MICHAEL BLAND.ORG
