That thread about the Replacements on SNL got me thinking of other band's classic TV performances. One of my favorites was Public Image, Ltd. on American Bandstand in 1980. I googled and found a link to the video (be warned - the quality is awful!):

http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0510/Public_Image_Ltd_-_American_Bandstand_-_800517.mpg

No one played live on Bandstand, everybody lip synched. John Lydon and the band made a mockery of this - I don't think John sings into the microphone once; he hits the drum cymbal with it, gives it to people in the audience. They did "poptones" and "careering". John drags people out of the audience onto the stage. Its a real clash of cultures - the audience is totally bewildered. Classic stuff!
