That thread about the Replacements on SNL got me thinking of other band's classic TV performances. One of my favorites was Public Image, Ltd. on American Bandstand in 1980. I googled and found a link to the video (be warned - the quality is awful!):

http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0510/Public_Image_Ltd_-_American_Bandstand_-_800517.mpg

No one played live on Bandstand, everybody lip synched. John Lydon and the band made a mockery of this - I don't think John sings into the microphone once; he hits the drum cymbal with it, gives it to people in the audience. They did "poptones" and "careering". John drags people out of the audience onto the stage. Its a real clash of cultures - the audience is totally bewildered. Classic stuff!

Yeah I actually remember seeing it when it first aired. Christ I'm getting old. Well there is one thing Lydon is and aways will be the worlds greatest prick no matter what th eoccasion. It's right up there with that show PIL did at the Ritz with the screen in front of the band. Nice to see I'm not the only one who also listens to WFMU.

Did anyone catch Lydon on Jimmy Kimmel last Friday? He was hilarious, going on
about the Rock 'n' roll hall of fame. His rants now seem extra crazy since he's an
old man.

Lydon and Lemmy always make me uncomfortable on talkshows even though I like them. I think Dick Clark said Lydon was his least favorite guest.
