Hmmmm, gotta creak open the wallet for this one. Anything that gets the The 'Mats more attention is A-OK by me. Didn't know Ron was into them...the man just gets cooler by the day, doesn't he?

Perry, if you like Sugar you might wanna give Husker Du's last 2-3 albums another shot. A lot of very similar songs/sounds/styles with what Bob later did with Sugar. Bob's first 2 solo albums are pretty damn good...and his most recent surprised me. Kind of a return to form.

And man, I didn't know people hated on the Reprise collection so much! Yeah, it didn't have anything from the early albums, but it's stilla fantastic collection for newbies, and the second disc has a bunch of great "rare" tracks. I keep hearing the Reprise catalog is gonna get remastered like the Twin Tone stuff, which I can't wait for.

Alright let's clear up a little info Bob is living in DC and yes he DJ's all the time mainly at the 930 club.
Second if you want to get into Husker Du try New Day Rising first. I love Zen Arcade but it can be a little daunting for your first listen. Christ I had it on vinyl growing up and still love it. I'm such a fan when Sugar first came around long before the copper Blue came out thewy were going ot play at a shithole club that I went to see all the bands at. (Club Babyhead RIP)
Actually these posts remind me of a great joke from Magnet magazine. Now that Winona Ryder has gone out with Westerberg and moved onto Paul Weesterberg. Look out Bob Mould oh wait the joke will be on her.
Replacements - Let It Be their best fucking record bar none.

I was given "Come Feel Me Tremble" soon after it came out. I wasn't too impressed. I never watched it after I saw it for the first time. That says volumes. I am a huge Replacements/Westerberg fan.

I was given an awesome compilation tape of some of the Replacements' earlier performances. Some awesome stuff. I always pop that into the DVD player when I am bored.

Actualy a friend of mine is the guy who shot the Westerberg doc. It was kinda funny to watch it and then see his name at the end as the cameraman throughtout. I'm kickin' myself I use to have a great videotape of Husker Du playin in London during the New Day Rising tour. Plus only getting to see The Replacements twice neither with Bob Stinston Pleased To meet me and Dont tell a soul tours.

I thought "Come Feel Me Tremble" was pretty good if you're not expecting a big production. Did anybody see the Replacements on SNL years ago? It was pretty sloppy and Bob was rolling around in some rainbow outfit that was too small for him. I only saw it once and not sure if I saw everything right. It was kind of disturbing.

I don't see how anyone who likes them can't enjoy Tim and Pleased To Meet Me. Granted, the two afterwards pretty much sound like Westerberg solo albums, but between Hootenanny and PTMM, they can't be beat.

You ar enot imaging things after the first song every one in the band switched clothes with each other. Search out a magazine called MAGNET a few issues ago they did a whole article about the Minneapolis scene from back then. Also it shows how big of a prick Bob Mould is to the other two.

The Onion just talked about that performance...named it #5 in their list of the top 10 musical moments on SNL...

5. January 18, 1986—The Replacements

In the years following the Fear debacle, SNL hosted plenty of classic rockers and acts from the MTV-sponsored "new British Invasion," but aside from one energized but not exactly dangerous performance by The Clash (circa Combat Rock), there show didn't even hint that the most influential bands of the new generation were plying their trade somewhere outside the studio doors. Then, in the middle of one of Saturday Night Live's bleakest seasons, critics' darlings The Replacements were invited on, in conjunction with their major-label debut, Tim. The band roared through a take-no-prisoners version of "Bastards Of Young" in the first segment, and then, after everybody in the band had changed into each others' clothes, returned for a passionate rendition of "Kiss Me On The Bus," the highlight of which came when Bob Stinson strummed his guitar exactly when he was supposed to. Why was that such a big deal? Because during both songs, the bandmembers were mouthing profanities into the camera, stumbling into each other, falling down, dropping their instruments, and generally behaving like the apathetic drunks they were. The fact that they still hit all the notes was miraculous, and, to quote a later Replacements song, sadly beautiful.

Like they touch on, it's rarely seen...the show was so damn bad at that time that the repeats (full episodes, including music performances) are hardly ever shown, if at all. I've only seen it once, but it kicks ass. I know a lot of 'Mats fans prefer the older, raw stuff, but songs like "Kiss Me On The Bus" are what make them for me, and to see them nail it live WITH Bob is a sight to behold. Totally them at their peak.

They played great. They didn't mouth obscenities at the camera. Paul yelled "Come on fucker!" at Bob to get him to play the solo in 'Bus' correctly. He was on mic and that got them banned from the show. Bob throws his guitar at the end of the song - they weren't dropping their instruments! The track list for the best-of album is pretty appalling. It's one thing to leave off "Go" or "I'm in Trouble," but where is "Sixteen Blue" or "Valentine?" To add insult to injury, they include "Achin' to Be," which get's my vote for worst Replacements song of all-time.

'gary's got a boner' is a gimmick song that's kinda par for the course with them (at that point), 'seen your video' is a great song ... now, hootenanay has some silly songs

there's no song more out of place on an album than 'ignoreland' on automatic of the people ...

Another favorite Replacements song of mine that I never see anywhere was the B side of the "I'm In Trouble" single. The song is "If only you were lonely.." and is just Paul alone on acoustic guitar. Great lyrics (I swore I'd never do this)...

If Only You Were Lonely

Well, I walked out of work
And I was tired as hell
Another day's come and gone and oh well
Somewhere there's a drink with my name on it

Well, I ordered a scotch as I bust through them doors
Spilled half on my jeans
The other half on the floor
When I saw you standing by that video game

Well, I ain't very good
But I get practice by myself
Forgot my one line
So I just said what I felt

If only you were lonely,
If only you was lonely too,
If only you was lonely
I'd go home with you

Twenty push-ups this morning, that was half my goal
Tonight I'll be doin' pull-ups
On the toliet bowl
And somewhere somebody's throwin up

Well, I broke the seal on my door
And I poured myself to bed
The whirlpool spinning around in my head
There was liquor on my breath
And you were on my mind

And I'll be dreamin of that smile
Without a care in the world
If only you were lonely,
If only you was lonely too,
If only you was lonely

I walked out of the kitchen
I was tired as hell
Another day's here and oh well
Somewhere there's a smile with my name on it.

I love "If Only You Were Lonely" -- I'm glad to see it finally get a widespread "official" CD release.

For some reason I thought it was on the new compilation, but, of course, it's not.
