any truth to the rumor dishwalla is opening for them

A few weeks ago someone started a thread about coincidences and how
freaky they can be. This is a perfect example. For no
particular reason today I wondered "whatever happened to Soul
Asylum?" I didn't hear an old tune of theirs on the radio or
anything, they just popped into my mind for some reason. Now
Perry posts this.

Too weird.

Im pretty sure those are the only 2 gigs Soul Asylum have played in years. Dave Pirner (or as I like to call him - GOD) did a solo album a few years ago and I caught that tour - it was ok. Good tunes - but not SOUL ASYLUMy enuff for me.

So, unrelated to anything except odd things that happen - today two different songs came up on my lil iPod with the phrase "Salad Days" in the lyrics, and neither of them was Minor Threat. I kept hoping for a trio, but it was not meant to be, and can not be taken seriously - one more omen to igore that I should eat better. ANYWAY - I've actually been listening to a lot of Soul Asylum and Husker Du lately - a lot of the older stuff with both, since I didn't really get into them until the late 80s. kind of sick how good all of those bands (throwing in Replacements too) were .

Their new bass player is Tommy Stinson who is currently playing on the new Guns & Roses CD but more impressive - h e is one of the founding members of THE REPLACEMENTS.

God fucking dammit.

Tommy and Paul need to stop being such babies and make the fuck up. I've got nothing against Soul Asylum, but the only band Tommy should be helping reform at this point is The Replacements.

I hear ya Mojo. But I dunno - maybe it's better they dont get back together and ruin their legacy.

However it almost DID happen a few months ago. From the sounds of Paul - its not out of the question.

.................................................. ....

AP: Did you see Tommy (Stinson, former Replacements bassist who now plays for Guns N' Roses) when he was in town?

Westerberg: No, no. (laughs) We exchange messages. It's like our last flurry was, I think that, I spoke to him through an old friend. What I did is I tried to get the band together to play a benefit (for Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller, who's recovering from throat cancer) and needless to say not all three members were willing or had time.

AP: Could it still come off?

Westerberg: Anything's possible, but I don't see it happening right now. You know, I've dreamt about it, thought about, I mean, literally dreamt about it, where I woke up in a cold sweat.

AP: How do you think it would go? Would it be a disaster?

Westerberg: It would be wondrous disaster. I think we'd all retain what we had to begin with, and it would be a blast. It would be a lot of hard work, I think mostly for me, to go back and relearn the songs and the words. ... A little bit easier for them, maybe, to kind of just thumb along.

.................................................. .............................................

It was The Replacements who got Soul Asylum signed to their first contract in 82 I believe. That whole Minn scene grew up together in the early 80s was just insane. (the original seattle)

Tommy has a great fucking solo album out called VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD. Rolling Stone called it "a stunning achievment" I have yet to read a negative review. I am starting to think Tommy may have been the brains behind The Replacements. I only say this because of his talent. REAL talent that I am just NOW discovering. Him & Paul working together today? Could be great.

I hate to think of Tommy playing with Guns. At least w/ soul asylum they are all childhood buddies and it's kinda like family. How can he work with AXL and NOT paul? is paul wose to work with?

That's good to see those Paul quotes, Perry. A couple years ago, Paul slammed Tommy in an interview for playing with Guns, and Tommy responded by flat-out saying that the Replacements would never reform with him. Glad to hear that that sounds like both realized how pointless a feud like that would be...

And yeah, Tommy's solo disc was pretty damn good. And so have Paul's last few albums/tours. Makes me think a Replacements reuinion would still kick a ton of ass.

our buddy jerry from mars claims to have writte runaway train and sunmaid from grave dancers -

that whole album is a solid rock & roll album - with the exception of the over played "train' - which is/was a good song - just got played too much. I think it won some sort of grammy in 94.

again - my 2 must have at all time soul asylum cds are Hang Time and..."and the horse they rode in on" (produced by former david letterman drummer Steve Jordan)

Wow, I cannot stand that fucking album...granted, I never was a huge SA fan, but that was the only album (cassette, actually) of theirs I remember buying and then tossing it out a few weeks later. If Jerry wants credit for it, he can have it.

Im like a school girl with this band. pathetic.

anyway -

I first saw them by accident. We went to see living color at the old 9:30 right before they hit. THEY opened for soul asylum! We stuck around and the place went nuts. Bassis Karl helped me on stage because like a dumb ass - I was up front with crutches and a cast on my leg. SO I got to sit on stage next to Karl who fed me rolling rocks all night and kept acting as if he was going to stomp on my leg. that show changed my life. - gave up drums and bought a guitar. It was so full of energy. If anyone has seen them from back then you know what I mean.
