View Full Version : Tell me what CDs to buy. Your pick for my music.

I've started to get into buying weird shit now. I always try to branch out musically and now I want to ask Ronfez.net people for help.

OK, DO NOT give me a CD you think I will like. This is for me to get new music and hear new shit. I mean don't give me a CD that everyone thinks is utter dogshit, but I don't want people to think they have to list rock bands to me just because of my name or preferred musical style.

For instance, I just bought the Ani Difranco CD with "Subdivision" on it after hearing a few samples of it on Amazon. I know, I just bought it for the novelty of having the famous Ron and Fez drop song, but I'm going to give the entire CD a listen.

So please, list ONE CD you think I should hear. It should probably be a favorite of yours because that means you believe in it, but it doesn't have to be.

I will in turn take all CDs listed into consideration and BUY them, not download them. That's my promise to you all. I will most likely bet them used off Amazon, but it's still a purchase, not a theft. I'm really trying to stop doing that so I support the musicians.

People like Bobo, Mike the Teacher and Mojo with a lot of musical knowledge can leave a few CDs if they choose. I think Fezident has a heavy musical background too.

So thanks in advance. I'm not a rich man so it will take time to get all of them, but I will try to get a bunch of them. We can also discuss the music in here too. Say for instance someone recommends a CD from a band I already own, I will ask if the sound has changed from this CD to that. I know bands do get better.

You probably know what Devo sounds like but don't base everything on the
song "Whippit" This album has a lot of great guitar in it, not just synthesizers.
Also...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y72/WhistlePig/ugly300.jpg
This band is hard rock--kinda AC/DC style from the Bon Scott era. This new
album isn't out until April 18, but you can preorder it from acetate records
(www.acetage.com) which also has a free download of a song if you want to
hear them. I know someone in the band so I have a copy already of a rough
version of the album.
If I may be so bold..

PhishHead, I was gonna go with RTT but I honestly thought he'd be bored with songs like Minarets (which I loathe) and One Sweet World (which I adore). Recently wasn't actually an album sold in stores when I first bought it, so for some reason in my mind I never consider it widely available to the public (you used to be able to only get the album at their shows).

Minarets is defintely one of their better songs though, the music behind it is what makes it. Some of the live versions are just amazing. Gonna give you four different suggestions - get 1, 2, 3 or 4 - they are in no order - they would make any cd collection a little better.

I've just discovered Bruce Robison...his album from a few years ago, "Wrapped" is stupendous....

And either of the last two albums put out by Alison Krauss and Union Station, "Lonely Still Runs Both Ways" and "Live"

Man, I used to be really into some of the Atmosphere stuff but I
realized how whiney and sub par Slug's lyrics are. If you want to
go classic, it probably doesn't get better than GZA's "Liquid
Swords". Lyrically at least.

For more recent Hip Hop, you
gotta go with a MF Doom project. Doom is probably the leader of

Ok, I know these are givens since you are into Death metal and the
like but I have been wearing out the CD by the new band Demiricous. The
album is called ONE.

You have probably already heard these as well but any of the last three albums by Amon Amarth are highly recommended.

True, in the last two decades, his work has been crap. However, there was once a time when he was indeed an innovative force in music.

This album is one of my top 10.

For reference, "Amoreena" was used during the opening scenes of the classic "Dog Day Afternoon".

Thanks everybody for your recommendations. Keep 'em coming.

AND ONE ALBUM PLEASE!!!

Some of you listed like 20 albums. Your list alone would take me weeks to get if I buy one or two CDs a week. I don't want to get too many at once because I won't give them the chance they deserve for me to listen and honestly judge them. SO please, one CD a post.

Man, lotta good music here...

I'll reccomend a couple hometown bands for me that I don't think have been mentioned...Jawbox was one of the more melodic DC post-hardcore bands in the 90's, and they put out some great stuff. Their last 3 albums are out of print (too bad, because those are the best by far), but can all be found cheaply on websites like Half.com. For a band a little more recent, I'd say check out The Dismemberment Plan, especially their albums Change and Emergency & I. They're a lot lighter than the "usual" DC band, but they put some really beautiful and unique music before they broke up...as a drummer, I think you'll really appreciate their rhythm section...always blew me away live.

OK, mendyweiss just reminded me I haven't updated this thread. I got kinda busy but thanks to Funkman, I did receive 2 Grand Funk Railroad CD's including the live one he most suggested.

Great shit man, awesome live album. This makes me wish I was alive when they were touring. Sounds like a fucking REAL event. That got put on the iPod the night I listened to most of it.

I also got a hold of Dave Matthews Band's album "Under the Table Dreaming" and wasn't terribly struck by it. I recognized the radio hits and thought they were OK. I'll try to give a few songs a listen again.

Listened to Weezer's "Pinkerton" as I type this and I'm not feeling this either. But I'll endure it a little longer.

OK, I'm going to try and be as nice as I can be in this thread about my opinions on bands.

Weezer is not my cup of tea, at all. It has been deleted from my hard drive after the listen I just gave it. Wow. I listened to like 5 or 6 whole songs and just felt nothing, then fast forwarded through the rest looking for......well, anything.

Listened to Radiohead's "The Bends" right now. Oooofaa.

OK, I had enough of Radiohead's "The Bends" too. I liked it more than Weezer though. I won't delete Radiohead just yet but it's not making it on the iPod.

The only song I like on Radioheads The Bends album is "Fake Plastic Trees" but it may not be your speed.

I love this album so much!

good choice Fluff, considered to be one of their best albums... Inside Looking Out has always been a personal favorite.

i actually sent Moe a copy of Caught In The Act(which i believe to be their best) and the first Live ALbum( very raw and alot of distorted recording but still captures alot of good stuff ) you will never hear bass as pronounced on any live recording you may find, at least i haven't heard any...

WOW, this is a tough one. I've been collecting for over 20 years and have over 1000 CD's.

The 1 CD I keep going back to over and over since the day it came out is this one

Amazing set list with a great mix of Pink Floyd stuff and Roger's solo work, ending with a new song "Each Small Candle"

His revamped versions of "Dogs", "Welcome To The Machine", and "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" could honestly be better than the originals!

On a side note, I just picked up David Gilmour's new CD "On An Island" and it's fantastic! For you Floyd fans, it has the feel of "Meddle" and "Obscured By Clouds"
