Pretty impressive resume when you look at it. He was in a lot of good stuff that I'd forgotten about. I remember him most from two of my all-time favorites: Kolchak The Night Stalker and the dad from A Christmas Story.

Here's hoping you finally get your "Major Award".

God bless the ol' curmudgeon!!! I lived for The Night Stalker when it was new to TV!!! Later on, some coked up, addle brained TV exec got the idea to cobble pairs of episodes of the show together and market them as TV movies. The narration used to adhere the 2 episodes together, read by McGavin himself, was worthy of Ed Wood in his prime and reconfigured the show as a post modern, "so bad it's good" classic! I have a double disc DVD of The Night Stalker & The Night Strangler that I love to watch w/ my 10 yr old daughter (Kolchak will NOT be forgotten).

One of my favorite actors of all time, just liked his mannerisms. Night Stalker I have on DVD but he's always gonna be the uber-dad from Christmas Story. There needs to be more men like Mr. McGavin.

For some reason, I thought he died a long time ago. Was there ever a rumour that he passed away? Oh well, he's at the big Madison Hotel in the sky now.

I think, back in the day, Darren McGavin would've made an awesome Captain Kirk.

If not him, Charlton Heston but, Darren would've nailed it.
