NEW YORK (AP) - For years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame didn't deem the Sex Pistols, the revolutionary punk rock band, worthy of inclusion into its ranks. Now that the Sex Pistols have gained entry into the club, they've decided the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't worthy of their presence.
the RnR HOF is a joke; it deserves to be insulted

Would you expect anything less?

BTW a few years ago I got to see the REAL pist0ls without that idiot sid of course but with Matlock and the old wanka's rocked the shit out of the 930 club in dc.
Glad to see Lydon's mellowed with age. He should go, and bring Sid with him. Now THAT would be a punk rock moment for the ages.

Something tells me he doesn't have the 40 grand, since he brought it up. Just a hunch.

Just a hunch.

i doubt it a money issue ... he sued mclaren (on behalf of the band) for monies owed, he also has p.i.l money, he wrote a book that's been optioned and the last two tours were quoted as 'lucrative'

requesting that kind of cash for as an honoree gives the hall all the charm of the hollywood walk of fame ...

i'm sure mclaren will be more than happy to have a stage, a mic and some attention for a few moments ... he can spin it as the final step in the great swindle

Ok it looks like I am the ONLY one who thinks the RnR Hall of Fame is NOT a joke, they have some amazing and awsome contributors in there (like Queen). Some of their choices have been questionable but who would YOU like to see get in there?

Sex Pistols? Yes they were revolutionary (although I will admit I never really listened to them) but they seem to not know when to lay down and die (like the Rolling Stones).

I will admit if it were not for the Pistols and all other Punk Rock then there would not be people like Trent Reznor.

Gotta Love NIN.

I'll get this part out of the way first. Were the Pistols influential? Hell yeah, if you believe music history, scores of bands were formed in the wake of Pistols shows. Do I enjoy the "Never Mind the Bollocks..." album? Sure. Do I think the Pistols should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? No. They put out one fucking proper release, and their best known lineup featured a strung-out junkie who couldn't even play bass. The Pistols explosion and subsequent implosion were revolutionary, but I say the idea of the Sex Pistols (DIY spirit, the ability to shock, etc.) was more influential than the Pistols as a body of musical work. As far as musical influence in creating punk, I'd warrant more credit should go to the Ramones, the New York Dolls, Iggy & the Stooges, the MC5, etc. For me, that's not enough to get into the Hall of Fame, dodgy prior selections and all.

As for the band's refusal to appear, this does indeed scream Johnny Lydon. It definitely isn't the fact that he doesn't have the money -- he made tons of cash from the reunion tours, and is now back in the limelight as a UK celeb because of a turn on the English version of "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here." Lydon's doing this because he's expected to be outrageous, but frankly, he's morphed into a cranky, old woman and a charicature of his former self. They don't want to be there? Fuck 'em. They shouldn't be there anyway.

rock and roll has a formal and proper "Hall of Fame" in the first

If you're going to put something in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame because it merely inspired lots of music, you might as well put the Vietnam War and England's socio-political climate in the mid-70s into the Hall of Fame.

Sid a horrible Bassist? yeah, awful.

He couldn't play, plain and simple. He was recruited by Johnny Lydon after they sacked Glen Matlock (and after the "Bollocks" sessions) because Lydon was convinced that he had the proper look and attitude for the band (and could be taught the bass). Often, however, during live performances, Sid's bass was completely turned down.

Noone under age 35 knows who the New York dolls or the Stooges are, but they know the Sex Pistols.

Which is entirely consistent with being culturally significant but not musically significant.

1 Album was all they needed, they're a beautiful bloody piece of rock history

And they were a piece of rock history, just not a band that needs to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in their own right. Let them be a part of the punk exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the supposed elite for the industry and the media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is irrelevant to me."
Seems a given in music that it's an utterly futile and irrelevant thing; but almost every membership organization, and for a way out of left field example, the National Academy of Science, supposedly this important organization in the field, and National Honor Society for another, is nothing more then a collection of people who have deemed themeselves important for some reason, wrap it up into the R+R HOF or the NAS or NHS, and all it is is a bunch of people digging 'who we are' and al they really do is decide who belongs and who deosnt belong with 'us'.

Richard Feynman was arguably the best mind since Einstein, won the Nobel in Physics, and he resigned from the NAS exactly because of this. He said all the politics involved in who gets in was the only thing that seemed to go on, he loathed it and what it stood for, so bye bye.

and I forget who mentioned the pistols as simmick before, but wasnt that Malcolm McClaren exact intent, aka the Great Rock and Roll Swindle? I think ditto for Bow Wow Wow. Ok now we need to find that Annabella thread...
