Arctic Monkeys

There hasn't been a band in a loooong time that has had this much buzz surrounding it. They're the biggest thing in Great Britian right now. Started out with a few songs on the internet, word of mouth spread like crazy, and are now being called the biggest thing in England since the Beatles. Now they're coming here. SNL gig in March, big marketing campaign planned.

I've listened to a few tracks and I dont get it. Some say you need to hear the whole album. I dunno. For one thing the heavy British accent is a little tough to see being huge over here. And I dont hear anything all that sounds all that fresh to me.

Any fans of this band? Can someone explain their appeal to me?

In a word, no.

I have the album, it's decent, they have potential, but it's astoundingly average in the bigger world of music and all that stuff.

The reason for the hype is very bizarre, especially here in the US...in the UK, people went nuts over them for one main reason...they sound exactly like a band called The Libertines that imploded in the last year after just two albums. A pretty good scuzzy band, though also INSANELY overrated, as thr British music press does with everything they love. Didn't get much play here...probably most famous in that one of the frontmen was the hideous troll seen around with Kate Moss when she was getting busted for drugs. But they broke up over drug use and in-band fighting and boom, along comes this band that sounds like a slighty "dance-ier" version of them...if the Libertines were still around, the Monkeys would have been written off in a heartbeat as copycats, but they're not, so they filled a void.

On top of that, they really got big almost solely through extensive touring and providing their music for free online, especially with sites like Myspace. They ended up on the British charts in the top 5 without a record deal, and helped explode this new "indie" sentiment in the UK. Whether that'll last or not, eh, who can say? But the press over there has just been picked up over here, and it's been rolling on and on, and there you have it.

So, long ramble, I know, but no, they're not worth the hype. And the name is complete shit, too.

Whats wrong with young people making honest music? Isn't that what rock and roll is all about? It's true that it is being overhyped. Its not gonna blow your mind or change your life but its a pretty fuckin good album. With the way that the American press pushes shit bands like Fall Out Boy and the rest of that pack its good to see a decent band creating a buzz.

It's funny, I'm usually really on top of my music but I've yet to hear these guys. I've just been way too busy with work and hockey. However, the buzz of this band did get to me. I haven't actually heard them, but I've heard the buzz. So the jury is still out for me, but I'll tap back in after checking them out.

Thought they were way to heavy to ever get real big.

I've been really diggin' them for months an predicted that they would be huge so i'm hoping i'm right.

I'm
definatly into their album. Its theme is the perspective of
British youth in a small town but its not done in a whiny way.
Despite the accent, it could easily be from an American band talking
about suburbia.

It's really good, dance-able, melodic punk/rock
with strong lyrics. 4/5 and they're really young so i'm hoping
this is just the start for them.

Ummm....ok CF. Yet if they sound like FF as BDC stated I doubt I'd be that into them. I can't get into that sound.

I don't hear the Franz Ferdinand comparison at all. It sounds like stripped down garage/pub rock mixed with a BIT of post-punk.

Well, their album cracked the top 30 in America, debuting at
number 24 on Billboard's album chart. It was the second fastest selling
indie debut ever in American chart history.

They were just on SNL tonight and they sounded amazing. Just
young kids making good rock and not being pretentious. I find
them really refreshing. Their tour is completely sold out so i'm
fucked unless i scalp to get into webster hall.
I didn't think they were that great. Maybe that was because I was busy reading a medical encyclopedia............

If I remember correctly, they did a Prince-esque ending to their last song, setting their guitars down on a note and walking off. If Prince didn't already do that a few weeks ago, I would've thought it was pretty cool.

Well, since picking up this album, I've definitely come to really enjoy it...though this band still couldn't be more overrated and overhyped on both sides of the Atlantic. It's good and fun, but come on...it's not nearly as earth shattering or "scene shaping" as people prop it up to be.

Though the song "Dancing Shoes" is probably the best single I've heard so far this year. These kids definitely have potential...

And Moe, what's the big deal with how these guys dress? Hipster kids drive me nuts, especially the horrible emo look that passes as "fashion" these days, but the guys in AM seem pretty average...shit, downright ugly and sloppy most of the time.

"At one point the singer points out somebody yawning in the audience."

I loved this moment. The song was being sung all serious and then out of nowhere he says 'that man just yawned.' showed that they don't take themselves too seriously.

Well I watched some video. Gotta give a singing drummer a little respect, but this kind of music just does nothing for me. Just boring.

Everytime I hear they are huge in the UK take that with a grain of salt. Let's all remember all the other NEXT BIG THINGS from the UK:

The Darkness- yeah that second album is just pushing them over the top.

The Strokes - OK they are from NYC but after all the hype and putting out a second record that sounded just like the first. Real smart move guys who did you get that lesson from Boston.

The Streets - The Next big rap act well overseas he still is.

So after all the hype dissapears will the Artic Monkeys stand the test of time. I have no clue I'll still be sitting around and listening to old Neil Young bootlegs all the damm time.

The British music press has a new "next big thing" every month. It's actually pretty damn funny to watch them turn on a band they loved a year or so earlier and make like they were NEVER cool.

I saw them on SNL and liked the attitude but the song was fairly mediocre. Has anyone referred to them as new Beatles yet? Thats a great way to kill an up-and-coming artist.
