13 episodes, plus a bonus 7 or 8 episode "add on" that'll air a few months after the first run (all of the episodes will be shot at the same time). After that, as of today, David Chase has declared this'll be it for the characters, on TV or on the big screen.

the time between seasons is waaaaaay too long. i don't remember and/or care about what last happened. i was a big fan of this show when it first came on but they really oversaturated the whole thing. i mean they even have a sopranos cookbook....the same can be said for american chopper. i never understood the popularity of that show, he just welds toys and shit on bikes.

No point to most of it. No storylines being developed. Even the acting was sub par, like everyone's just going thru the motions. People being introduced who I dont give a shit about left and right. And the guy who hung himself was barely in the show before tonight, and the one episode that focused on him, he dies. Too fast. The next Rat in the show will be none other than the gangsta that is a fat fuck who lost weight and is gay. I don't even know his name he has been such a non-character. The feds will catch him on surveillance videotape giving a snarling to some jabroni, and he will cooperate in order to save his reputation, plus, he was given a ridiculous amount of face time on the last epsiode.
I personally thought this was the worst episode ever and I do not like the direction this show is taking. Who the fuck wants to see Tony fighting for his life all season while the rest of the family fights to be boss? The Sopranos always was and should always be about Tony kicking ass, not lying in a hospital bed having dreams.

It's becoming increasingly more clear that they plan on offing Tony, if for no other reason than even if they have him pull through he won't be able to do jack for the rest of the season. What 's his storyline gonna be? Clicking the buzzer for help getting his bedpan? Without Tony it just is not the same show, stupid stupid idea.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. On the one hand I was disappointed they started off with the dream sequence. It's just frustrating. On the other hand I think Edie Falco did one hell of a great acting job.

AJ is a little punk. I'd smack him so hard upside the head he'd see into next week.

I loved the episode. As little "action" as there was, I thought it flew right by. I appreciate being hobbled by a narrative that doesn't let you know what's going to happen. The canvas is wide open right now, and anything can happen. Story wise, each season is constructed almost like a novel, and this week was a very powerful chapter. The unthinkable suddenly is crossing the viewer's mind - that Tony might be expendable to the series. And if he does pull through full force, will this mean that the ultimate ending for the very last episode of the series won't be death, as (again) everyone expects?

Anyone else catch Vito stuffing his face on the couch, back at the house, and letting one rip? - Pffffffffffffttttt. It's very subtle and very funny. Look for it on one of the 5000 replays this week.

Actually, if he's on Atkins, like he was saying, odds are he wouldn't be farting as much as he was before.

I can't tell you about those other shows, but if you're only watching the Sopranos for the mob stuff and violence and what have you, you're missing a whole lot. Not that it's not enjoyable on that level, it is.
I thought the episode was good. They did a lull episode to place all the characters and let you know that things were going to change because Tony was in the coma. Next week, we're gonna see lots of infighting admidst the "family" with Silvio taking over top duties and others grabbing for that power.

I think we'll have several episodes of Tony in the coma, then he won't be able to lead for a few afterwards, so it'll create great drama with all the mafia guys while the family (Carm, Meadow, AJ) try and deal with their patriarch in the hospital.

This is what I've been thinking: For the next couple of weeks, Tony's gonna be out of action and a power struggle is going to erupt within the family. Sil, Paulie, Christopher, Vito, Junior and Bobby, spurred on by Janice, are all gonna get really, really nasty. AJ's gonna start to make moves as well. Someone's gonna get whacked, and Phil Leotardo's gonna convince Johnny Sac that now is the time to make a power move against the Jersey Family. It's going to be open war and complete chaos.

Tony is going to come out of his coma unharmed and with a new outlook. Much like Gene, he's going to realise that he no longer wants to be in the Mob. The problem will be that he will see what him leaving will do to people he loves, especially Christopher and, perhaps, AJ. He's the real heartbreaker, because at last AJ will be finally growing into the man Tony has always wanted him to be, but the new Tony will not want him to be involved in the Mob. Tony's new battle will be if he is willing to get out of the game and essentially leave all these people he loves to kill each other, or stay and be miserable.

That doesn't mean he's a vegetable, but that he could be having headaches, seizures, or just being forgetful. All of which will undermine his ability to run his family, amke his capos doubt his ability to lead and make him vulnerable to a plot. Great dramatic device by Chase.

I was very critical of the last episode, although after watching it a second time I definitely appreciated it more. I have to say this latest episode really was good though. It had everything. Classic mob whackings, humor, drama, and thought provoking scenes. I loved the end with Tony meeting Tony B. again and fighting not to go into the light. That was a powerful scene.

I have question about something though. I know Silvio would be next in line if Tony were to go, but with Sil now laid up and talk going around about who would be next after that, I always thought that Paulie was pretty much even with Silvio as far as power goes.

Vito's talking like he should be next if Sil were to go, but wouldn't Paulie technically be next?

I think this season so far has been phenominal. I like that each episode has made the viewer think. I enjoy the mob violence as much as the next person, but Chase has found a way to be creative without spoonfeeding and that's all I can ask of a show, find a way to be fresh and original. So far, this season has done just that for me and I love it!

The best analogy I can make of this season so far is that it's like a girl friend you think might be cheating on you, but your not 100% sure so you are still along for the ride.

Tonite's episode had some great moments, but it also had some incredibly slow moments at the hospital. The entire "Hotel California" dream sequence could have been condensed into one 20 minute part of any episode and not had to eat up as much time as it has. If they needed a reason to get rid of Junior all you would have to do is have him start talking to the cops. I am greatly concerned with where Christopher's character is going. First I thought there would be some clich‚ terrorist sub plot, now I think we are going back to the movie sub plots, eck!

I will stay with the show all the way through, but I will go on record to say if it turns out to be a huge kick in the junk I won't be shocked. It might be worth considering that the first few episodes were a way to test the audiences to see if the show could carry on without Tony's character.

Each only concerned with his own "piece". Even Christopher didnt wait long to rehash his film nonsense once he wasnt being watched. Funny how Sil (Icoulda been the skipper) didnt last a day as their leader without emotionl and physical collapse.

That was the point of the show.

I just finished watching it for a second time. Anyone notice how Carmela "wiped her hands" of the money Vito and Paulie gave her?

Paulie and Vito are assholes. So is Christopher. "You owe me. I came to you about Aidriana." Everyone is out for themselves, especially Vito. I think he buys it this season. A little to big for his britches (no pun intended).

I have a feeling this isn't the last we see of the dream sequence (which I believe is Purgatory).

Tony's alter ego, "Finnerty" in his coma dream is the gangster aspect of his personality, the splinter in his conscience, who try as he might, Tony cannot fully ignore; and it manifests itself througn Tony's panic attacks/fainting spells and other self destructive behaviour. In the dreamstate, Finnerty has manifested as the faceless, evil-doer whose sins Tony is paying for. This is in contrast to the person Tony really feels Tony should be: the normal, average joe in each of us who is born, raised, etc. on an imprint of mostly good with the usual shortcomings, (i.e. selfishness, laziness, lustfulness, etc.).

In the dream he is being sued by the monks, who represent Tony's idea of god. Unless he takes responsibility for Finnerty's actions, even though his connection is coincidental, his loss of the suit will mean the loss of his life. The fact that Tony's path crossed that of Finnerty's in such a haphazard way is an allusion to the distance that separates the two halves of Tony's psyche. The scene at the door of the waiting family/home was really Tony's psychic graveyard where he's buried all of the feelings for those he cared for, yet helped die. The person turning around in the doorway was not Olivia, but rather his ex-mistress Gloria whose death he felt directly responsible for. He might have chosen to walk through the door, and in fact had almost given up his briefcase, (a metaphor for his earthly existence), to Tony B., had he not been shocked back into consciousness by the attending hospital staff. What will he do now? Will he ignore the loud and clear messages of his near death experience, or will he play out his days as a reformed, but still active gangster...a compassionate dictator? We'll see.
I like what you are saying Meatball, but I think the girl in the door was his Moms. It is funny, I had totally blocked out the whole car dealer love affair sub plot thing and forgot it until you mentioned it.

I really thought tonights episode was great, despite the Jerry Springer moments Pauly had. It's about time the guy had a side storyline. He's a great character. He should cut his aunt some slack. As Tony said, she raised him and bailed him out in his younger days. She really is his mother.

The people who wanted "action" should be happy.

The pastor really drove me nuts. Reminded me of the days when my older sister took me to Born Again Christain meetings. I would have told the guy to get the fuck out but obviously Tony had a change of heart.

Why did Janice dismiss Tony? She's the religion freak. Tony is having a revelation.

I really felt for the science guy. My dad had his larynx removed. Tony should have visited.

The story line with Bobby shooting the rap guy in the "fleshy part of the thigh" was hilarious. No doubt getting shot in the ass will piss the rap guy off to no end.

I think this season has been great so far. I'm so glad they fill 55 minutes with riveting storylines.

Pretty decent episode. Although sometimes it is a little off putting when the show switches from comedy to tragedy in an instant. I kinda dig it though. Like two great shows in one: the sitcom farce and the mafia drama.

Best line from tonight, imho: "And wait for Vito to get outta the bathroom? Takes and hour and a half to take a dump. You could build a jetty with what comes out."

Poop humor is funny. Jetty humor is funny. Thumbs up all around!

I've got to put in my vote for funniest line of the night: When the rapper's in the hospital room and Tony overhears his handlers. "Yeah, this shooting's really going to help improve your street cred, espcially since you held a job for all that time."

Last night's episode was one of my favorites ever. It was great on so many levels. Most of them have been mentioned, but I loved Tony's revelation to science and how insignificant we are... and the scene when Christopher says "I don't feel that way" - beautifully shot.. Christoper's face in half shadow the whole time... two face? The whacko preacher claiming a 6,000 year old earth was great.

The genius, the rapper and Tony watching the fight... he's seeing both ends of the spectrum in that room. Loved it.

Great storyline for Paulie too. He's always been my favorite, and this could spin him in a potentially new... maybe bad.. direction.
