I would honeslty like to see Brett Boone win the job. The pwer he had in the past, perhaps a fresh start this year might rekindle that, at least for 1 year. Give Keppinger (injury) and Hernandez (youth) grow a little bit more and get ready for 2007. Could be a pipe dream, but I'd rather see Hernandez get a full year under his belt and see where his numbers are. Keppinger could be a good utility man. Perhaps another Marlon Anderson-type player....

I cant say Im too worried about the 2nd base position/8 hole,
considering the 1-6 guys. What really worries me is the rotation. Pedro
is another year older, might miss WBC and Spring Training because of
injury. Glavine, old and inconsitent. Zamrabno...VERY inconsistent,
though in some games last year he was brilliant, the end statistics
speak for themselves. Trachsel, coming off a year in which he played
for like a month, didn't see much out of him. Heilman, well, did an
awesome job out of the pen last year, but honestly I dont see him being
lights out as a starter. We've seen him start before...

And
then there are the other 5 as Mets.com refers to them. Theres Alay
Soler, the Cuban defector who everyone is saying is major league ready.
John Maine who did pitch in the majors last year. Hes 23 with a career
record 2-4 with a 6.60 era and a 1-1 BB-K ratio. Then of course theres
Lima...who also pitched in the majors last year. Albeit hes coming off
of a season too dreadful for words, hes only 33, had a pretty good
season a year ago in LA, and is a former 20 game winner. Could be....

My
favorite in the group is Brian Bannister. Hes a guy Ive heard the most
about. however he has the least amount of experience so I dont
think theyll call him up till September roster expansions.

This is what I think the rotation in like...June...

Pedro

Glavine

Zambrano

Lima

Soler

Anyone interested in Met single game tickets can get into the pre-sale today. It was supposed to be for season ticket holders, but I got the password over at Wackbag and it worked like a charm. Just go to www.mets.com and click on "pre-sale", when it prompts you for the password type in: BANDWAGON. I got tickets the day the went on sale last year, but due to the crazy traffic, it took me from 9am to 1pm just to get on the site. No such problems today.

I could see them bringin up this Mike Pelfry sometime this year. Sounds like a pretty good prospect.

"I'm not afraid to bring guys up," Minaya said yesterday. "I'm not saying we'll do that (with Pelfrey), but I wouldn't say it won't happen, either. I'd rather take a conservative approach, but then if the player shows he has the ability, I'm not afraid to take a young guy and put him in there."

02-19-2006, 01:00 PM

Yeah, Pelfrey's a kid that could've gone #1 in the draft last year
had it not been for Scott Boras wanting max money for his clients. His
stats are really unbelievable in college, not unlike Heilman's stats
from Notre Dame. I just think that with so many guys there contending
for a spot, any spot, itll be that much more difficult for a kid with
just a couple of months of minor league experience to squeeze in there.
I also think that that kid Humber they got out of Rice 2 years ago
could throw his name in the mix as well, though his injury and tommy
john surgery set him back aways...
The rotation will be Pedro, Glavine, Trachsel, Zambrano, and Heilman.
This was in today's Daily News for all you Cablevision/DirecTV people.

There's a cable industry buzz about some memo, circulating inside Cablevision, indicating that if the company can't agree on a carriage contract with SportsNet New York by its March 16 debut date, it will still carry the new TV home of the Mets while negotiations continue.

If there is any truth to this industry drizzle, it could signal SNY and Cablevision are close to a deal. If that is the case, the pressure could shift to DirecTV. If SNY signs with Cablevision, and DirecTV has problems making an SNY deal, the satellite provider would become vulnerable to Mets fans switching from DirecTV to Cablevision.

Andrew Fegyveresi, a spokesman for SportsNet New York, which is scheduled to go on the air March 16, said ``we're in discussions with all cable and satellite providers.''

SportsNet New York is jointly owned by Comcast, the world's largest cable-TV operator; Time Warner Inc., the world's largest media company; and Sterling Entertainment Enterprises LCC, a company formed by the Mets. SportsNet New York also will be carried on Time Warner and Comcast cable systems.

There is no timetable for an announcement, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the contract isn't signed.

Two-Year Battle

Cablevision and the YES Network staged a two-year battle over pricing. The dispute kept the Yankees from being seen by Cablevision's customers during the 2002 season.

Their differences were settled by an arbitration panel, which ruled Cablevision had to carry YES as part of its basic service, meaning all of the company's customers had to pay for it whether or not they wanted to watch the Yankees. Cablevision wanted YES placed on a digital tier, meaning only those who wanted it would pay for it.

``Cablevision got burned last time,'' says former CBS Sports President Neal Pilson, who is now an industry consultant. ``It left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

The agreement benefits both SportsNet New York, which can charge advertisers more because it reaches more people, and Cablevision, which won't lose any Mets fans to satellite or other cable operators.

The Mets had been on both Fox Sports New York since 1996 and MSG Network since 2002. The team paid $54 million to those Cablevision-owned networks to end their contracts after the 2005 season.

Cablevision also owns basketball's New York Knicks, hockey's Rangers and their arena, Madison Square Garden.

yeah bitches.

Great news!

Now all that's left to find out
is if the digital box is needed to see the new network. I'm aware
this is unlikely but I just want to be 100% sure.

For
the record I think it's complete bullshit that Beltran is going to get
the third slot in the order over David Wright. My lineup card
would be the following:

1.) Jose Reyes

2.) Carlos Beltran

3.) David Wright

4.) Carlos Delgado

5.) Cliff Floyd

6.) Paul Lo Duca

7.) Victor Diaz

8.) Kaz Matsui

I'm
willing to give Matsui another shot in spring training in hopes he
comes together and plays a decent 2nd base. Alot of my new found
patience with him is hope and the fact he is batting 8th.

I'm
stumped as to why there is not an outcry for Beltran to be batting in
the two hole. It makes PERFECT sense, no? Not only does
Beltran belong there but Wright is as natural a 3 hitter than I can
remember the Mets EVER having.

Being totally honest now, are any Met fans here worried about the lack of depth now with the starting pitching? It went from a strength, to a clubhouse of old timers with injury history. Pedro still claims he's only at 70%, Trach is coming off a big injury year, Glavine is older then dirt now, Zambrano has never been solid with his great stuff, and Heilman?? I really don't understand the fact that they traded two young/good pitchers. One of them traded I could understand, but both makes absolutely no sense. I do like Julio in the future though. Great stuff, just needs to focus/care.

P.S. You still have fucking Matsui at second!!

What do you guys think of the trade rumor Soriano for Reyes straight up?

As good a hitter as Sori is, I'd say no. Reyes proved last year he can stay healthy (he led the league in AB's) and you need a mix of youth and veterans. Reyes is a baby, has huge upside and even if he just settles in and improves slightly on what he did last year over the next few years, he could be an important piece to the Met puzzle. Plus I know you Met fans always have a hard on for homegrown talent, which I've never understood as a yankee fan.

Plus Sori is getting a rep as a malcontent. May be unfair, everyone wants to move him off 2nd, and he just wants to play his position. And he's not a hack at 2nd, he's OK. But everyone thinks he'd be a better outfieder.

Probably is coming from the Nats. Who made one of the world's dumbest moves trading for Soriano thinking he'd move to the outfield. Now they want to move him.
That would be the THIRD team that wanted him to play the OF (Yanks, Texas) and the 3rd time he refused. And then they acted suprised when he said no. You could have asked any decent Yankee fan in NY. Nice scouting deek.

Could be they're fielding offers and floating rumors of other offers to get whoever they're talking to to up their bid. Yanks do shit like that all the time. Never believe anything any GM says about trades.

A year ago I would have said yes to the deal (and Texas wanted to do it) because you still weren't sure about Reyes being too injury prone. But now, no.

But everyone thinks he'd be a better outfieder."

First, Met fans/all fans SHOULD have more pride in homegrown talent vs. free agent pick ups. It's the right way to win, and I have little respect for teams with low levels of homegrown talent regardless of winning. Unfortunately until the game changes, this component is very much reduced. In fact, this is the key factor really missing of late from the Yanks that wasn't when they were in their WS winning days. They had homegrown youth and talent. Now most of their big names come from trades, not development. Wang and Cano are no where near the talents that Jeter, Rivera, Williams and Posada were during their run.

Next, Sori is a malcontent and a truly bad fielder. Many reports are out there that he can be a distraction in the clubhouse and that he's a very selfish player. Look at his strikeouts numbers throughout the years. Also, he refuses to even shorten his swing in two strike counts or pure contact hitting situations. He also very rarely hits the ball to the side of the field he needs to in order to move runners in key situations. That alone will make coaches and teammates nuts. Then factor in that even with his power and raw skill that he only got intentionally walked 3 fucking times last year with 637 abs!!! It's not a wonder why they'd rather pitch to the kid, he swings for the fences and personal glory every time he steps up to the plate. Team means nothing to him, which is probably part of the reason the Yanks included him in the AROD trade. I know it's Arod, but I don't think they were that upset moving Sori for even less. He only had 5, count'em 5, sacrifices in 637 abs last year as well. He probably got them by accident last year while swinging for the fence and dribbling one off the front of the plate, or on deep flys. But 5 is a fucking joke!

Now for the fact that you claim he's ok and not a hack. Hack might be too rough, but he's very below average. In fact, he led all second basemen in the Majors with 21 errors! Only two 2nd basemen had over 20 and only 11 had at least ten in the whole majors! Sori ranked #1 in errors among second basemen, #79 in range factor and #111 in fielding percentage. I must qualify the latter numbers by adding that a lot a players are listed in there that played only a few games, but still he's WAY down the ranks of most everyday second basemen. BDC needs to stop having a "hard on" for anyone who is or used to be linked to the Yankees and start to view the facts for what they are. Dispute it if you can.

I'm not sure he's a malcontent. When he was with the Yanks, his teammates all liked him alot. And thats on the Jeter/Torre all about winning Yankees. They said he's a good guy, but can just be a little dense and frustrating trying to coach him. And not in a malicious way, he just is one of those guys with tremendous baseball skills and very little baseball IQ.

About his fielding, I watched him for close to 3 years with the Yanks and he was adequate. If he's gon downhill since, I couldn't tell you. But he turned the DP well and had OK range, so so hands. With his bat, you could live with it.

About the hard on comment, I dont care where the ballplayers come from I just want to field a good team. And part of a good team can be a mix of young and veteran players. But if they come from the Yankee farm system or free agency doesn't matter to me at all. Plus there's usually a learning curve with any rookie, which is usually much worse than the one you get signing an experienced free agent. And alot of so called "farmhands" are aquired from trades with other teams. So are they really yours? Who cares. Get me guys who can pitch, catch and hit the ball. I dont care if they come from Cuba, Japan or Columbus. The idea you "had to have" a mix of farmhands and fill in the gaps w/free agents was blown with the 97 Marlins, anyway.

You miss the point entirely, as this age of free agency is exactly what's wrong with the game. There are no team icons anymore. Sure a few do remain, but fucking Damon is a Yankee! Case and point. Sure he was an A, but there's just something wrong with that. In fact, the Yankee's and other money teams are the only teams that ultimately can aford to keep their top players and still remain competitive. Meaning.....Sure the Jays could have kept Delgado at the price and time they lost him, but then they'd have no money for the many other positions and overall they'd field an even shittier team if they kept him. Meanwhile, the Yanks can sign tons of free agent players, including their own, and make huge mistakes but cover them up by making even more moves. The Yankee brass aren't even close to great baseball minds, they just play the game with a weighted scale. It's like they play the lottery against 30 other teams but buy up 60% of the tickets. Sure it doesn't guarantee that they win the thing. But it sure as hell means they have a much better chance. Skill, insight and talent evaluation has nothing to do with it, they simply have more resources in an unbalanced system. It needs to be leveled before major baseball fans like myself lose interest in the game. 200 million is just insane. At least a soft cap of 125-150 million should be instituted. el fin

I wonder if he's a Ron and Fez fan, too?

Mets general manager Omar Minaya spent time on the field before Friday night's game with his Giants counterpart -- the NFL's New York Giants, that is. Minaya talked to Giants GM Ernie Accorsi, a baseball fan and evaluator.

"I can't help myself," Accorsi said. "I don't look at baseball players through football eyes; I look at them as athletes. But I do look. And I love this game. I read Baseball America, I have XM [satellite radio] and [MLB] Extra Innings [cable package]. I know the names. I'm not here to see the stars. I like to see the young kids, especially the hitters."

Accorsi worked briefly for the Orioles in 1994 before taking his current position.

"I thought I knew baseball," Accorsi said. "Then I spent time with Frank Robinson, Doug Melvin and Roland Hemond. I listened a lot and found I didn't know as much as I thought."

Accorsi made one sound baseball judgment as he watched the Mets taking batting practice Friday night.

"I like that kid a lot," he said, pointing to David Wright.

It doesn't matter who's playing second base. If Glavine keeps
getting shelled they don't stand a chance. It's bad enough that
Pedro's got toe issues and Victor Zambrano is still in the rotation
(although if this Bannister kid is for real he'll be up before too
long). They've a got a hell of a lineup, and believe it or not I
really like the bullpen, but I'm real worried about starting pitching.
When is Willie going to realize that Beltran is not a #3 hitter.
He's a speedy guy who makes good contact, perfect for the 2-hole.
Plus he's performed quite well there before. The 3-spot is for
the best hitter in the lineup, and clearly David Wright is that
guy. Before Beltran becomes another Bobby Bo, fix the lineup

this kid is terrible. it looked like a little league game gone out of control at one point. it comes down to wagner blowing that save. and just to weigh in, it looks bad when they play the same song as the closer from the yankees. i don't care he had it first, as much as i detest the yankees, someone in this clueless organization should have known better.

All you baby yankee fans need to give it up already. You guys are pathetic, it's a fucking song. Do you really think Mariano picked that song to come out to? No he would probably rather come out to La Bamba or something like that. Wagner picked the song. Yankee fans listen to too much of Mike and The MadPuppy.

Wagner didn't pick the song. Jeff Bagwell picked the song for him while he was in Houston.
He said he used to come out him some country song and Jeff Bagwell suggested he change it.

I think all you Yankee fans should take it as an FU that Wagner uses the same song. Why the hell should he change it?? They play for two different teams!!!
The Mets and Yankees have been rivals since day 1, but when it comes to some stupid Metallica song we agree to give it to one guy in town? Fuck no!!!

I don't fucking believe it. Matsui hit a home run in his first at bat of the year for the third straight year. This one was an inside-the-parker. He should only be allowed to hit once a year.

Pedro is mean. You have a relief pitcher hitting against you, did he really need to drop that hook on the outside corner like that? That pitch woulda made Pujols look silly, nevermind dewan Brazelton

Well, I can still get 2-1 on the mets winning the NL and 4.5-1 odds on them winning the whole thing...I am considering a wager on one of these.

In a way, Cakes brings up a good point. I would imagine that Darren
Oliver would be the favorite to start, should Bannister have to miss
time. He's done pretty well out of the pen and they would probably want
to keep Heilman in relief with his awesomeness.
