Great win by the Mets yesterday. I cant remember the last time they went to turner field and won 2 of three. Going for the sweep today.
19-9 now. I'm not worried. The save he blew in SF was a homer to Bonds
that wasn't even an earned run cuz Wright bobbled a 2 out grounder. On
Wednesday, it was slippery as hell on the mound, everybody was
struggling with their control. The guy still has a 1.80 ERA and 18 Ks
in 15 IP...

That was a ridiculous win by the Mets. You lose your starter after 4 batters, have to piece the game together with a bullpen that just went 14 innings the night (actually a few hours) before. You had no business winning that game, yet you did. Best record in baseball at 21-9. EVEN FUCKING JORGE JULIO ACTUALLY SAVED A GAME! MAYBE THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE THING THATS HAPPENED ALL YEAR!

You do realize, its all downhill from here. It cant get any better than this, only worse. You're doomed.

i watched baseball tonight, they had a piece on about should the mets trade lastings milledge for barry zito. i'm not sure how i feel about that. i know milledge will probably take floyds place next year and we can also sign zito as a free agent at the end of the year. i saw milledge play a few spring training games and looks like a pretty exciting player. i'd rather bring up pelfrey to replace zambrano.

by the way how bad was the injury? i missed the beginning of the game yesterday. i'm not gonna say im happy that he's hurt but i certainly wont miss him. (oh and wasn't this an issue when we traded kazmir to get him, something about kazmir motion that will fuck up his arm? fucking leiter and peterson)

man the rotation is falling apart. Luckily we have Kris Ben.....well we have Jae S......

Good decision to only have 5 guys you're willing to start. Not like you should wisely spend money like the Yankees (although I hate them and they're having some troubles lately with free agents, you still can't deny that they actually have a semblance of knowing what they're doing) and have at least 6 starters ready to pitch.

Man well I guess the Mets have 7 options now for the last two spots in the rotation: Maine (whose finger's coming off I guess), Bannister (oh god please don't rush him back, its not all that important to get this kid back especially when you rushed him on to the opening day roster), Having Lima Time every 5 days, Jeremi Gonzalez (who possibly was brought in to be more of a 7th starter to start; I know he sat in the Red Sox minor league system for a year or two as kind of an emergency guy), Darren Oliver (he could inspire seniors on AARP night), Aaron Heilman (I put this sixth because I legitly believe that the Mets consider this the 6th of these options despite the fact that he's pretty much the 7th inning guy and has the arm and variance of stuff to start), or make a trade.

I'll be honest that that 7th option intirgues half of me and petrifies the other half. I know that I'd trade Milledge for Zito right now. I think that if we can get him and extend his contract he could surely be a good enough 2 or 3 pitcher despite any leveling off he's had the last couple years (which I mean is perfectly acceptable for a Cy Young caliber pitcher to do I'm pretty sure). I'd be ready to trade Diaz in fact over Milledge. I heard that we could gotten Affeldt and another young arm from the Royals for just Benson and Diaz. That would been peachy.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Mets could always pull off a panic deal that nets them an immediate solution guy for a piece of the future. I'm predicting that the Mets will actually trade Heilman and get a starter of some kind, if not directly then they will trade Heilman somewhere and immediately get a starter in another trade. Its just a hunch and it seems like it would be possible in Mets world.

cougarjake13
05-09-2006, 04:45 PM

our bullpen isnt so deep that we can afford to trade heilman and its more likely that they'll give him another shot in the rotation before he gets traded. i am too worried about a panic deal, although it may not be considered a panic deal i dont want to see a repeat of the kazmir-zambrano trade.

i'd trade diaz but i'm not sure he has the same trade value he did last year or in the offseason, has he even played for the mets this season ??

as for milledge-zito i think i can wait til the offseason and go hard after him and still keep milledge, i know it may be tempting to do it now and potentially have a pedro-glavine-zito pitching in the playoffs but i still think we have to wait

With his slow start (1-4, 6.52) and high price tag ($13 million through
'07), he could be had for a marginal prospect. Mets GM Omar Minaya
acquired him when he was the Expos' general manager and gave him a
contract extension.

If I'm Omar, I do that yesterday. I know he's spotty, and is off to a slow start. But he's better than Lima, Bannister, and whoever else they're trying out on the weekly auditions.

The only question is when. Minaya says he's "not afraid to make this
move," although it remains to be seen just how desperate (or how far
out in front) they'd have to be to thrust a rookie into the spotlight.

Until then, the Mets may forego their hunt for a starting pitching and instead add a reliever, paving the way for Aaron Heilman
to return to the rotation. Not only would they unburden themselves of
Lima that way, but it would satisfy Heilman's long-standing request to
become a starter.

I think the Heilman move is the way to go. Patch together the 7th and 8th with whoever can get an out or two (go righty-lefty) then Sanchez.

well, went to the game last night and boy was it great. Drank all day in the city/parking lot/subway.....then was treated to the best game I've seen in person. The fans were great, a couple fights, but overall the yankee fans acted like actual humans and were humbled in the end so they weren't as arrogant as normal. Walking out of the stadium mets fans got a 'Enter Sandman' chant going which I thought was pretty original.

true its not as important as a series against philly or atlanta but a win is still a win and we need to win games that your up four runs in the 9th but wags shouldnt have been in there, at least let sanchez start the inning and if he gets into trouble then maybe bring in wags

He's probably more like 40ish. But it doesn't matter, he has a TON of baseball savvy. Throws his pitches from different arm angles, and has the guts of a burgler. No fear whatsoever. Sort of like Pedro, but with different stuff. Also dont be worried about him walking guys, he knows his limitations and picks his spots with who he wants to pitch to. He'll also let up alot of HR's, but if he's on top of his game they'll be with no one on base. He's also had a sub par season last year and in the start of this year. He hasn't been good since leaving the Yanks, but I think he'll be good in Shea and with the Met run support. Also, he'll be more happy in the Met clubhouse, and he loved being in NY. Friday, Martinez (5-1, 2.79) allowed two runs in seven innings and struck out 10 Florida Marlins,
but lost for the first time this season 5-1. It was his first loss
since Sept. 22, when he allowed a run and lost to the Marlins.

Martinez, who leads the National League with 80 strikeouts,
revealed that he is not completely recovered from an injury to the big
toe on his right foot, which kept him from playing for his country in
the World Baseball Classic and limited his spring training practice.

the injury from getting worse, will make his next start Wednesday
against Arizona in New York.

I actually watched the Mets over my beloved Yankees while El Duque was pitching. He looked good. His fastball was topping out at 93, which surprised me. He usually didn't throw that hard 2 years ago as a Yank. He's still suceptable to the long ball, but he always was. I was surprised he walked the righty in front of the lefty who hit the HR. He usually likes to go after righty's, who he's much more effective against. But he should stabilize your rotation from here on out.

But the Marlins aren't a big hitting team, so I'll want to see more before I say he's the same guy who helped the Yanks win 3 of the 4 WS rings.

I can't imagine why.,

I think he's a good player, who's
finally starting to see the ball better at the plate, I know Matt
Morris is struggling, but he's still a good pitcher, and that was a
nice piece of hitting on that double, and Benetiz is still considered a
major league level closer so you can't really take anything away from
that homer either. He still needs work, and he still needs to realize
this isn't triple A before guys start beaning him left and right. I

They are absolutely gonna have to get a starter before the deadline, or they aren't going anywhere in the post season. Can we all now admit that the Kasmir deal was possible the worst in the team's history? I don't see Minaya ever making that deal.

Nice run support for Pelfrey's debut. If they can just keep scoring 16 runs for him everytime he pitches, he should win a few games.

BTW-He was having trouble locating his fastball, and lacks a big league curve. Maybe it was opening night jitters, but he'll need to do better next time out or the league will catch up with him fast. But congrats on a good debut and best luck going foward. THe Mets will surely be needing him.

I'm not posting this to rub it in, because I know its a sore subject for Met Fans. But HOLEY SHIT Kazmir is fucking good! He wasn't nearly as good last year when he pitched against the Yanks. But he has poise, command and the best stuff I've seen come up since Roy Oswalt. THe Yanks scored one unearned run in the 6th, and then two in the 7th when he appeared to tire a bit (which is the Yankee game plan against tough pitchers) But for the first 6 innings he blew the Yanks away and had them baffled. His slider is the best I've seen since Guidry or Randy Johnson in his hay day (not now).

I guess the only good news is he's young and will be a free agent in another 5 years, when he's 27

They may need a starter . Glavine and Trachel are falling apart. I don't know what to think of Hernandez. I hope Bannister comes back with something and Pelfrey can keep his head above water. Pedro should be well rested at this point. A good young starter could fill the gap though. It's all in the starting pitching at this point. The bullpen is solid, The offense is solid. The starters have gotta keep 'em in the game. Where the White Sox had the perfect staff for the postseason last year, the Mets have an awful staff for a short series.

According to Buster Onley on ESPN today, Beane has moved from Hielman AND Milledge for Zito to EITHER one plus some lower prospects. Beane likes Heilman, and with Zito hiring Boras he has no cance of signing him.

I say DO IT. Either one.

You can patch together the bullpen with someone else if Heilman is the one to go, and I'd prefer to send him. Maybe you can work out a side deal where you get Roberto Hernandez to fill his spot.

As far as Milledge goes, you can always sign an outfielder. Every year theres a few good ones available as free agents. But you cant find quality lefty starters every day. And the fact he hired Boras as his agent means you KNOW for a fact he'll go free agent. So you'll have to pay top $$ to re-sign him. But if you were going to sign him anyway, you're going to have to pay him top $$. And he could be the difference between winning a WS or not. And you never know if you'll be this close again, with the rest of the league so weak.

As the Mets are built now, I'd think they should get to the NLCS, maybe the World Series if things go well. But you haqve big questions about their starters. If they get Zito, I'd make them favorites to get to the WS, and probably favorites to win it.

I'd let Milledge AND Heilman go for Zito. As long as they don't let go of Pelfrey, Bannister, or Maine I'd make the deal. Like Jack Matthews said in Newsday, getting rid of an outfield prospect is not a bad as getting rid of a pitching prospect... Scott Kasmir ring a bell with anyone?
They have been amazing on the road this year! I'm still a little nervous about Glavine and Trachel, especially if they don't go get another starter, but they're offense could carry them through the postseason if its clicking like this.
Yeah, his defense wasn't bad, he just couldn't throw. Big guy + Average arm= Lots of stolen bases. But he called a good game and blocked the plate well. I'm going to try and make it down to see him when the Padres come in. BTW, he leads all NL catches in HR's. Not bad. I'm happy for him.

He probably won't get to 500 but that doesn't matter. He will go in on the first ballot but will he go in as a Met or a Dodger? He had better years as a Dodger but spent more time with the Mets and literally turned the franchise around.

The thing that sucks is we could have saved a ton of money and kept Looper. He could do the same crap job that Wagner has done. Is anyone confident with him going into the postseason? I see a horrible blown save similar to the one Benitez gave us in game one vs. the Yanks. The only saving grace is that this offense can win games without Wagner being a factor. Lets hope he isn't called upon in a clutch postseason spot.
