Man, cheer up! Yeah, the pitching is questionable, but the Yankee hitting lineup is a fucking beast.

How many World Series has that won them lately?

They need an ace, and they have to rely on either a 42 year old injury prone pitcher or a 37 year old who has had two straight sub-par declining years, and who seemed to fall off the cliff at the end of last year. Rotation depth should be fine, and the bullpen has some questions in critical spots (Farnsworth and Dotel) but could turn out to be one of the best in the league.

And the lineup I don't think will be as good as advertised. Damon is already declining. Sheffield seems to me to be a prime candidate to stink up the joint. I think Giambi will duplicate last years stats at best. A-Rod and Jeter will be fine. Posada seems ready to have a horrid year.

In the end, I see only Cano and Matsui posting better numbers than last year. A-Rod will probably post slightly worse numbers simply because of the law of averages. Jeter should be about the same, could go either way. Every one else will decline, and I bet more than one will drastically decline.

This does not have the makings of a World Series contender. At best, they will be the same old team we've seen the last few years; they will dominate the regular season, and then drop to the first team they meet in the postseason with good pitching. I see a long summer made worse by the fact that George put 3 ex-managers in Torre's coaching staff.

EDIT: And one thing not mentioned: Last year the Yanks had the best OBP in the league in the lead-off spot. They had a horrid OPS in the second spot thanks to Torre's love affair with Tony Womack. This Damon signing has me cringing more by the day. It needs to pay off this year, before he turns into Bernie.

Yea, Mojo is dead on here. I'm very worried about the pitching staff but I have no fear in the Yanks ability to put up 7 runs a game. I feel like 2006 will be a repeat of 2005, but here's to hoping!

HBox, you cant pull the world series card against a Cubs fan. thats like eating a sandwich while telling a somalian immigrant why he isnt allowed in this country, then throwing out half the sandwich as he is walkin out the door
I refuse to feel sorry for a team with Carlos Zambrano, Kerry Wood and Mark Prior.
Snoogans
02-15-2006, 09:19 PM
you mean a team that basically gives wood and prior free tickets for half the season
Half a season of either of them is better than what most teams have. When I heard the Yanks blew their chances with Prior by lowballing him in negotiations, I was pissed for days.
Yeah, well telling a Yankee fan they shouldn't be so desperate for a World Series will do you as much as good as telling a crack addict that he should lay off the crack.

Have you guys heard that Pavano is already having back pain after day 1. Im sick of that pussy already. He's a bust. But other than that i think we should be in good shape as for as pitching goes. If we stay healthy and Chacon pitches the way he did late last year we got it.

Later

I'm with H-Box. I dont love our pitching. Fortunately, neither does Brian Cashman and this year he has more flexibilty than he did last year. Right now they're built for the regular season, and another quick exit in October. A few mid season possible fixes-

Pettite-If Clemens doesn't come back to Houston, they could be in for a long season. They've done nothing to improve their hitting in the off season. Clemens carried them last year, and without him they could be awful this year, and out of it by the trade deadline. Pettite's in his walk year, and if the (always cost conscious) Astros dont plan on re-signing him, then a deal to the Bronx makes the most sense for both parties. I'm sure George will gladly throw an extension in to entice Pettite back into pinstripes.

Barry Zito-Its his walk year, and there's no way Oakland re-signs him. Beane has been in and out of love with Zito for the past few years. He's going somewhere at the trade deadline, and we'll have to see if the Yanks can put together a package that gets it done.

Both are Lefties, and traditionally Yankee teams are built with Lefty hitting and lefty pitching. I also think lefty's tend to overperform in the Bronx given the dimensions of Yankee stadium. Pitchers like David wells and Jimmy Key had some of the best years of their career wit the Yanks, and some bad ones once they left.

Who exactly are the Yankees trading for these pitchers? It starts with Wang and Canoe.

First of all, Snoogans, that Cubs/WS analogy was brilliant and hilarious. I already posted it onto the Cubs board I go to, and everyone there loved it.

Secondly, quit doggin' on Prior, man! Wood, I'll give you, needs to really shape up this year, and has been way to injury-prone the last few years. Prior's only been knocked out by two freak injuries the last few years...getting trampled in the basepath and then the bullet line drive to his elbow last year. There's no reason he's not going to be an ace and Cy Young-level pitcher for many years as long as he can avoid those random DL stints. Wood, I am optimistic about this year because it's his contract year. The attitude of the fans and the Cubs is that he needs to work to stay, so he's either gonna pull it as a solid opener the bulk of the year or transfer over to the 'pen and light things up there. Short of his arm falling off, Wood knows he's literally pitching for his supper this year, and it's gonna show. Zambrano I cannot wait to see pitch. The guy is a workhorse with a ton of passion AND pitches AND power. And yeah, Maddux is getting up there, but he's coming into this season having lost a good 10-15 pounds (so has Zambrano), and he's gonna be a good #4 or #5 pitcher. And between Jerome Williams, Glendon Rusch, Wade Miller, Angel Guzman and Rich Hill, the Cubs should, in THEORY, have the #5 spot locked up and any typical short term DL stints covered. So, yeah, I can see the envy from a Yankee fan...as long as they avoid the catastrophic injuries of the last couple of years, the Cubs' pitching, starters and in the 'pen, on paper, look pretty damn good.

Sorry to derail the thread, Yankees fans...I can't help getting worked up this time of year!

BoondockSaint wrote:
Who exactly are the Yankees trading for these pitchers? It starts with Wang and Canoe.

Maybe, but not nesessarily. It really depends on what the best offer on the table is for any player. I'd trade either of them in the right deal, but not both. If Pettite doesn't want to be traded to anyone but the Yanks, it could be a salary dump situation.

I seriously doubt the Yanks will be able to make a deal w/Beane, since he always tries to mug people, and you can just wait for Zito to go free agent. And all indications are he will. The Pettite deal is already being rumored in some circles, though I doubt anything will happen before the deadline.

Another lefty who's in his contract year.

Mark Mulder-You'd have to figure its very unlikely he becomes available, since the Cards are a perennial contender.

But even if they dont land any of these guys at the deadline, you'd figure the Yanks will going after them hard if any/all of them go free agent. So the staff may get better next year and dont be surprised if Cashman is patient with this in mind.

Or if the A's are in the tank, they might try to trade him before the deadline, in which case they'd want pitching.

Ozzie Guillen steps up and apologizes like a man.

"I don't call him a hypocrite in that way. Alex is not a hypocrite.

are a hypocrite. You say, 'Hey I want to play for the United States and
that's the team I belong on,' move on and that's it."

Guillen
said he didn't want Rodriguez to have to deal with the issue at spring
training when he reports and would call him, if necessary.

"I
apologize to Alex Rodriguez, his family, his fans, the New York Yankee
organization, to the White Sox organization," Guillen said.

"That's

BTW, 2005 UZRs were released. UZR is one of many defensive stats, widely considered the best. Guess which outfielder had the worst rating, which also happened to be the worst rating of anybody on the team? If you said Bernie, WRONG. That would be Gary Sheffield with a -20, almost twice as bad as Bernie's -12.

More surprises. Only 3 defenders on the Yanks didn't come in with a negative rating. That would be Jorge Posada (+4 best on team), A-Rod (+1) and............................................... .

Jason Giambi(0).

Cano had a -1, Matsui a -2, Jeter a -8, and Johnny Damon a -6.

Moral of the story? Defensive ratings are shit.

Overall, one must weigh the range factor based on position vs. overall errors to get a true feel for the players ability on paper. However, one must truly watch a player most of the year to truly judge their abilities.

I'm mixed on trading for Andy Pettite. I'd love to see him in pinstripes again. However, it will take a lot to get him, and his contract ends after this year.Which is an incredibly tricky situation. Are you going to resign a 34 year-old pitcher with a history of elbow problems to a long term contract, or are you going to let him go AGAIN. This time, letting him go would probably be the smart thing based on what I'm guessing he'd be offered on the market. But it would take some huge brass ones to go through that again.

It all boils down to this: Not re-signing him 2 years ago was a disastrous move, one that is still killing this team to this day.

beep-beep! i see the Yankee Jeep comin'! Comin' to get Twenty-Seven!!
I actually have some faith in Pavano this year. I've never seen so many people pile on a guy because of vague unsubtantiated rumors. The man was injured. He pitched well to start last season, and he was pitching hurt for a while before he went on the DL. I am definitely not ready to write him off. He's shown equal parts good and bad. He may have an excuse for some of the bad ones, and a couple of those good starts were REAL good.

XM's play by play is done from the home team's announcers. So during any Yankees home game it's Sterling and Susan "I suck at my job" Waltman (sp?).

Wright likes new curve: Jaret Wright unveiled a new curveball
Saturday -- one with a sharper break -- and felt almost giddy about it
after limiting the Marlins to three hits and one run in four innings.

"It felt a lot better," Wright said, after striking out four.
"It really hasn't been a good pitch for me for awhile. I talked about
it with Mike Mussina and he thought this might help."

Instead of a two-seam grip, Wright now uses four seams and holds the ball deeper in his hand.

i am all for them getting a stadium, but they are moving it to another location. I know it is silly of me, but that place, where it is, is magical. that cannot be bottled up and put into a new stadium. I think The Boss wants this new stadium because he is dying, and wants to insure his legacy. this team of high priced palyers will not win this year. they have almost no heart, except for jeter, and MO, and 1 or 2 others. this is not the same team that they were in 96-99.

But if you haven't paid attention lately, maybe you haven't noticed
some very significant Yankees events -- events that indicate a shifting
of Yankees philosophies.

Two winters ago, they actually passed on a chance to sign Carlos Beltran,
because they didn't see tying up another $100 million (plus a potential
$40 million more in luxury tax) as a real brilliant idea.

No, the biggest story was Steinbrenner's decision to make peace
with manager Joe Torre and to give GM Brian Cashman not just a new
contract, but more control over the direction of the operation.

There is monstrous significance to those developments for many
reasons. But one of them is that Cashman is trying hard to steer the
Yankees away from the mind-set that clubs should be put together like a
giant fantasy team.

"I hear people talk about our payroll and that's why we should win.
Well, if that was true, then we would have had 100 world championships
already -- because we've probably led in payroll for 100 straight
years. … So that's why I get insulted by that talk, because we respect
the game way too much to have that attitude."

So this year's coaches include four former big league
managers (Larry Bowa, Tony Pena, Lee Mazzilli, Joe Kerrigan), plus two
living Yankees legends (Don Mattingly and Ron Guidry). That staff has
spent this spring refocusing this group's attention on The Little
Things (execution, baserunning, preparation, etc.). What a concept.

"Maybe we took a little of that stuff for granted here -- but not this spring," Cashman says.

"To win, you have to be able to do the little things," Jeter
says. "One thing that bothers me a lot about baseball and how it's gone
today is … you turn on the TV every night to watch the highlights, and
all you get is home runs. But when you get to the postseason, there are
not too many home run hitting contests."

Thats music to my ears. The Yanks have been playing 'wait for the 3 run HR' for the past 4 years, and haven't won since they got away from being able to win 1 run games.

Plus he and alot of other people think that the yankee lineup will be much more efficient with having a pure leadoff hitter on top. Which they haven't had since Knobloch.

Another good stat

On defense? You bet. Damon may not be Ichiro out there when it comes
time to throw the ball. But he can sure catch it. He reached so many
more balls in the outfield last year than Bernie Williams that, over
150 games, Damon would have turned 101 more fly balls into outs than
his beloved predecessor, Bernie. That's a lot of doubles.

That excuse is good till the end of this week.

And it's only two starts, but you cant like what you've seen from Wang so far. Especially against two weak hitting teams. But maybe teams like that give a pitcher like him more trouble. Back in 97-99, Mariano was blowing away the league, but for some reason the Royals used to give him fits. And they were a little slappy, punch and judy team. Too soon to judge, but Wang seems prone to the big inning when he gets his pitches up. He was like that last year, too. I dont know if its fixable, either.

At 3-4 on April 11th I'm not really worried about anything. Yea Wang left his pitches up today, but we know when he gets that sinker down and working he's virtually unhittable. It's so early that there's no need to be excited or terrified yet.
Well, with his shoulder, I'm terrified every time he pitches.

OK Bosox, I'll see your Beckett and raise you Willis

Trade rumors swirl around Dontrelle Willis

Recent reports suggest the Marlins could look to deal the
24-year-old D-Train by the July 31 deadline. Should those intentions be
genuine, Gotham's ballclubs are letting it be known that they want to
be in the mix. "Talk to us about Willis before you talk to anyone
else," is the word both the Mets and Yankees are sending south.

Gotham Baseball has learned that the Marlins scouted both
teams "very heavily" this spring, and with each team carrying more than
a few of its top prospects in camp a tad longer than usual, Florida
"has a very clear idea of what interests them."

"Having Jeter and Damon [go to the World Baseball Classic] was very
fortunate for the Yankees," one Northeast baseball executive told Gotham Baseball.
"[They] did a lot of complaining about [it], but it gave a lot of teams
exposure to kids like [Triple-A righthander Matt] DeSalvo, who no one
really knew about before.

"I like [Mets' GM Omar] Minaya's chances in any deal, but the Yankees are clearly the front runner."

The source cited both the Mets' lack of prospects and unwillingness
to trade their lynchpin young players in any deal as making them
"longshots" for Willis, who won 22 games last year and is already one
of the most recognizable personalities in baseball.

While Willis isn't exactly the Yankees' type of player — there's
nothing conservative about the D-Train — but as a young, dominating
lefthander whose skills have already translated into marquee success,
he would slot perfectly into their rotation. Also, unlike Oakland
southpaw Barry Zito, who'll be a free agent at the end of the season,
Willis' new team would control his contract (if not his salary) for the
rest of 2006, plus all of '07 and '08.

"That alone makes him worth more than [Zito]," another industry
source told GB. "A team willing to pay a high price in prospects would
be far more likely to part with them for Willis than Zito.

"Plus, given Zito's struggles with the Yankees in his career, his value to other AL teams isn't exactly soaring these days."

Previous published reports speculated that Eric Duncan (GB's
No. 1-rated Yankee prospect) would be the player who Florida would be
most interested in, but we have learned that righthander Phil Hughes
"would be the centerpiece of any deal that Florida seeks for Willis."

I dont want Zito, even though all indications are he wants to play in NY. If they can sign him in the off season, fine. But if Willis is available, and can be had for Duncan and Hughes, you cant pass that up. A 24 year old lefty who's already won a CY Young doesn't come around too often.

TheGameHHH

keep Duncan, send Wright.....even send back Pavano, though the Marlins can't handle the contract. Can they handle Wright's?

I just can't see that happening. Even the Marlins, and even Loria aren't going to trade someone like Willis.

If they did, even though its a steep price I'd send Hughes and Duncan, and I'd gladly send the Hughes-Cabrera-DeSalvo package. But it ain't happening. If someone like Willis entered the market, you'd have the whole league lining up to empty their farm systems, and most teams still have more to offer than NY.

Bulldogcakes

I'd throw in Melky too, so Fla will still have someone named Cabrera on their team. And with all the old geezers in Fla, maybe they figure no one will notice. I would think that other teams might be able to put together better packages, but I thought the exact same thing about Beckett, Delgado, and most of the other guys they dealt in the off season.

That franchise is a disaster. It's not like they're trying to rebuild a contending team anytime soon. They're just trying to get the hell out of Fla as soon as possible. So they want to save as much money as possible. And Dontrelle is their highest paid player at 4 mil. Dontrelle may want out, too. I know Cabrera has already said he'd like to be traded.

I possibly saw the only game I'll see this year yesterday on ESPN. Thanks for the memories 06' yanks.

I'm totally out of it with the team, but throwing anything at all at Willis is just asking for more dissapointment and less young players. Brown, Pavano, Wright, R.J, Vazquez. How many pitchers from the NL do we have to get before we realize the odds are that they will suck and/or be injured and ran out of town a year or 2 later. I dont want Zito either because I noticed hes sucked the last like, 3 years or so, but at least he's sucked in the A.L and certainly shouldnt suck more then he has recently as a Yank, unlike Willis. Our system has produced or at least acquired our best pitchers in the last however many years, and we need not give up our starting center fielder of the future for anyone that will make us wish violent actions apon them.

I'm sitting in a bar last night outside of the Boston Garden and I'm having a few beers, kicking back and watching the Yanks. Now we were on a deadline to see a comedy show, so we had to be in the Garden by 10:30. We watch the game up until about the top of the 9th, then we paid our bill and left. I felt fairly confident considering Mo was in. At the end of the show, around 2am, I called to get the score of the game only to find they lost in the bottom of the 9th. Fucking unreal.

Loved what I saw from Chacon today. Torre's been saying the problem with him is lack of work with all the off days they've had lately. Chacon's a feel pitcher, not a power pitcher. Hopefully, he gets steady work and we can count on him to be the pitcher he was last year.

If Chacon needs steady work, he really should be the #3 starter. Another good outing by Chacon. The pitching has really been good lately, you'd think the record would be better. But its still April, and now I want to see them start beating some good teams and pitch well against teams that have decent lineups. Toronto this weekend, then two Bosox series in early May.

Here's our pitching rotation IN TERMS OF EFFECTIVENESS

Mussina

Chacon

Johnson

Wright

Wang

Moose has been dominant, as good as he's ever been as a Yank.

Chacon is starting to remind me of El Duque, which for me is as big a compliment as I can give a pitcher (I LOVED El Duque). He picks his spots, walks a guy here and there that he doesn't want to pitch to. Pitches well with men on base, and manages to escape unscathed more often than not. He doesn't blow you away with amazing stuff, just keeps guys from hitting the ball hard and wins and wins and wins. And gets little to no repect for the job he's done for the past two seasons. Everybody seems to be waiting for the bubble to burst (Like it did for Small).

Unit is what he is at this point of his career. Can be good, can be dominant, can be awful. Depends on the matchup. Not a top of the rotation guy anymore.

Wright has actually been good his last two starts, and has never showed me a lack of guts as a Yank. He just has to stay healthy and try to get regular work as the 5th starter.

Wang is a work in progress. I love his stuff, but he has yet to put it together as a Yank. And dont forget, he was basically the same last year. Prone to the big inning, 4+ ERA last year. Wasn't good in the playoffs. He was just such an improvement over everyone else they had last year on their weekly audition night.

Will be interesting to see who goes when Pavano comes back. My guess is Wang.

Nice article about Giambi

Story

"There's really never any doubt," Wonsowicz said. "If he lays off
it, it's almost 100 percent a ball. If there's a question, it's a
question of black or nonblack. It's never on the plate."

The
black is the sliver of a border around the plate. That may be all that
separates Giambi from having a flawless definition of the strike zone.

No
player in the majors takes as many pitches as Giambi. He leads the
American League in walks and on-base percentage and was named player of
the month for April, and his extraordinary discipline at the plate is
the main reason why.

Through Friday, according to Stats Inc.,
Giambi had taken 72.4 percent of the 515 pitches thrown to him this
season. The next closest player was Bobby Abreu of Philadelphia, at
68.3 percent.

"A lot of people would say, in certain situations,
we need you to swing the bat," Giambi said. "But my theory is, no, I'm
helping the team more by taking my walks because I'm putting that guy
behind me in a better position to hit."

Some people expect him to swing the bat more, but I love what he brings. Should be the #3 hitter from now on.

"He never swung at bad pitches, even when he was a 17-, 18-year-old
guy," said Yankees pitcher Aaron Small, Giambi's teammate at South
Hills High School in West Covina, Calif.

"But he's just
gotten better over the years as far as his eye. It's incredible
watching the pitches he doesn't swing at. You don't know how he does
it."

Mattingly said what amazed him most was how soon Giambi
determined where a pitch would end up. Many hitters identify a pitch in
the split-second after a pitcher releases it. But Giambi can often read
the location even earlier. If the pitch will be a ball, Giambi may not
start his stride.

"He gives up on the ball so early, it's almost
like instantly when that guy lets it go, he can tell it's a ball,"
Mattingly said. "You see him just give up quick. I could never do it.
Not even close. I'd pick it up, but I wouldn't give up on it like that."

Giambi
said he had always been able to memorize a pitcher's movements. In an
interview, he casually mentioned the way Josh Towers, a Toronto Blue Jays pitcher, threw his curveball. Then Giambi moved his hand to other angles, showing how pitchers can telegraph location.

Thats fucking amazing. He can tell whats coming before it leaves the pitchers hand.

I'd have to say that Wright goes back to the bullpen when Pavano is back. First of all, Wright has pitched out of the bullpen before, and had success there. Also, Melky should stay in the minors because of that little error he pulled on top of the BS he showed us last year. And God help us if George gets rid of Chacon or Wang when the big pussy Pavano comes back. Holy shit its hard to root for these guys through thick and thin when they play like this. Way to go Johnny Damon, "Ol Homesick" is 0-for against his old ass-buddies. I swear to Christ that mother fucker is doing this on purpose.

And when he sent that little thank you to all the Boston fans in the newspaper it looked like when you are going out with a girl and all she does is talk about how great her old boyfriend was and how much she misses him. Focus on the task at hand Johnny Damon!

oh man guys, it was even worse actually being there tonight. I swear it was the most painful nine innings to sit though. By the 8th inning it was me, my buddy and about 50 red sox fans in our sections, oh the horror.

Come on H, you loved it! The big question is how much did you lose on the game last night?

I lost zero, unfortunately my account balance has run out. Now i just need to pick up on that serious gambler's mentality that if I just put more money in, I can win it all back.

ummm, didnt anyone notice the guy only gave up 2 earned. Everyone wants to smack around randy, but if not for Arod, good chance he throws 35 pitches threw 3 innings and its a tight game., Yea he walked the ball park, but he still gave the team chances to get out of it
