Not sure what the Phillies are getting in this deal other than dumping some salary.

Good for the Yankees though.

No Proctor, I love it.

Looking it over, its a great deal for the Yanks. THey solve their 2 big problems, needing an outfielder and a 5th starter. And Lidle was the better choice over Lieber. The kid they gave up is a long way away and had trouble in the Gulf coast league last year. Plus he's a shortstop. Matt Smith was up with the team both this and last year, and didn't impress me as untouchable.

Also, the problem Abreau had in Philly was they wanted him to be their main guy to drive in runs. And he sees himself more as a blend in player. I love it. I think the problem with the Yanks in recent years is has been too many guys trying to hit 3 run HR's and not enough guys passing the baton. The great 98 team was a team of blend in players, and this moves them in that direction.

Great, great move by Cashman

Looks like CJ Henry will be playing for the Lakewood Blue Claws soon, so I'll keep everyone here updated on how much of a disaster/steal this trade turns out to be.

Sterling's enabler says that the deal is for four minor leaguers - Henry, Smith, and TWO minor-leaguers from a list that doesn't include the two names.

The Yankees are responsible for the salary for this season and next. If the option is picked up, the Phillies pay for it.

so you would get rid of the guy that while he acts like a bitch at times produces for you, plays while injured, that you went after so hard that you dropped the ball in re-signing a franchise pitcher? shef does play balls to the wall, i dont know enough about abrue to say if he does of not but i know i would rather have a guy that played with heart than just with ability.

im just saying sheff is much older and who knows how well he'll recover from wrist surgery which is obviously an intregrel part of swinging a bat

and abreu is more like a paul oneill type player, not flashy but gets the job done hits for some power , and can drive in runs , obviously not sheffield type numbers but in the yankees lineup he doesnt need to

unless Sheff would accept a Bernie-type deal for next season. though thats highly doubtful.

Sheffield is 5 years older than Abreu, much worse than him in the field, and not a good bet to return at his regular level this season, if at all. Sheffield is a worse bet to return than Matsui. Sheffield is 38 next year. Is it really smart to count on his bat speed to remain? I think its much more likely for Abreu to rebound from a sub par season (where he is still maintaining a +.400 OBP, BTW) than it is to pay Sheffield the same amount. Even if they both put up typical seasons next year, Sheffield's small offensive advantage can be mostly offset by Abreu's superior defense and baserunning.

And I highly prefer Lidle to Ponson, Chacon and even Wright at this point. I hope he can handle the transition, he's pitched in the AL before.

And then there's this, Abreu's numbers versus the Red Sox the last 3 years:

.455 BA, 1.379 OPS, 3 HRs 9 RBIs in 33 ABs.

As of right now I give Brian Cashman big kudos. He really improved this team and gave up almost nothing. Improved the bench, improved first base, improved right field, improved rotation. Still a little weak in the bullpen, but if Dotel can return at his normal level, or even somewhat close to it, I like how this team looks.
same here. i would still like a more solid 5 man rotation but i am a stickler for pitching and wouldnt be happy unless they grabbed D-train. i do think the moves they made were smart.

Don't forget the yankees coaching staff made up of either yankee legends or former major league managers. And that the Mets manager is a former yankee great, thats sweet too.

Groom Him for a year??? please, the guy was already an all-star. He
wasn't some AAA talent. The Royals may be considered AAA but they're
actually not.

Did you see Bernie Willaims play CF last year? Did you wonder why they were so desperate as to call up Melky Cabrera last year? Did you wonder why fucking Bubba Crosby was starting games in CF last year in the playoffs? it's because Bernie Williams had no business playing Cf last year. There would have been no grooming. It would have worked exactly like it's working this year, with Damon playing CF everyday and Bernie playing once in a while when Damon is injured or needs a day off?

My point is, when is enough enough?

Last year, as you mentioned, when the Yanks decided to choose between Randy Johnson and Beltran. They decided for whatever reason, perhaps not being able to afford both, perhaps thinking acquiring both would not be smart for the future of the club, that they would only acquire one, and they went after Johnson, and once they got him stopped their contigency plans and cut it off with Beltran.

But it takes balls for a Met fan to say this. Did you notice what they did this offseason, Minaya's repeat raping of Florida? Did you notice Sportsnet NY popping up? Do you realize why? Because they are headed down the same road as the Yanks, they are trying to close the financial gap. And you better hope for your own sake one offseason when the Mets are chasing down a marquee free agent that Wilpon or Minaya go, "Oh Jeez Louise guys! This is just too much. Who cares that this will improve our team? This just isn't fair. Let the Tamaa re-sign Scott Kazmir. We had our chance with him and blew it, it wouldn't be fair to Tampa to sign him with our payroll!"

But then again, who knows with Wilpon.

I agree Hbox, the yankees/red sox set the standard with their own networks and the metropolitanos are following suit.

I understand its a money game. I don't fault steinbrenner for trying to aquire every player every year no matter the cost, in order to deliver a championship to his fans every single year. I think more owners should be like that.

What my point was, the yankee FAN is the problem. not the way they run their club or the system in which they operate.

That old "Yankee inevitibility" was in the air, I haven't felt it for the past few years. They were chanting "Bobby" for Abreau, A-Rod got a big hit, and just like the good ol days Bern baby burn gets the game winning hit.

They were even screaming at Vernon Wells that he'll be here within the next 2 years. Which he probably will, from all the buzz thats been going around in the past week. I'm just surprised so many fans knew about it.

I know there are still problems. Who knows what you get from Johnson consistently anymore. But they are so solid right now in the starting lineup and the bench, the bullpen is deep and performing well. Proctor is rested and I think they've figured out how to use Farnsworth. Reinforcements are coming in Cano, Dotel and later this month the two outfielders. I expect a very strong August, and a stronger September.

That's eight more than the next closest guy. Proctor and Farnsworth are 1-2 in apperances in the league. Every goddamn year we go down this road. There's a reason Tom Gordon sucked in the postseason the last two years. There's a reason Tanyon Sturtze fell off the face of the earth. There's a reason why Scott Proctor sucked for a good month after being way overworked in the beginning of the season. Sometimes Torre has excuses. Shit like today can't be excused. If Farnsworth gets hurt protecting a 2-1 lead, you have to accept that, he's doing the job he's paid to do. Instead, he gets hurt pitching in the eighth inning of an 8-1 game!? WHAT? HE'S NOT GETTING PAID $7 MILLION TO BE A MOP UP GUY!!!!!

Tenbatsuzen

The main reason why Farnsworth and Proctor have so many appearances is because someone like Chacon and Wright couldn't go deep, and Randy Johnson also had issues sporadically going deep.

You can't leave Randy in there to get shelled given his age, and Chacon may have taken himself out of games, given his attitude problems.

Appearances is one thing, IP is another. Yes, Farnsworth has pitched 65 innings, but Villone and Mo have about the same innings pitched, and Farnsworth has pitched in 47 innings.

It's also unfair to compare Gordon falling apart late in the season compared to Farnsworth and Proctor, considering that both Farnsworth and Proctor are significantly younger than Gordon.

With Ponson in the bullpen, he can now serve the purpose of eating up innings late in the game. I'm sure that will be the case in the future. In fact, for all we know, the original plan was to give Ponson the ninth before Farnsworth went out early.

Matsui saw the doctor today and was not cleared for batting practice. It will be at least a month before he returns.

And Ponson is the mop up guy. He should have gone in as soon as Lidle was taken out, and stayed in until he ran out of gas or started getting into trouble. That's his job. Hell, have a ridiculously short leash with him, that's fine. Don't run out your best relievers in a blowout tiring them and risking injury in a blowout.

This is, by far, the toughest stretch for the Yankees this season. No games off until August 28th. In the meantime, here is their schedule:

3 at the White Sox, 4 home vs. the Angels, 3 home vs. Baltimore, 5 at Boston, 3 at Seattle, 3 at the Angels, finally a day off, 3 home vs. Detroit, 3 home vs. Minnesota.

And for that series at Boston it's 5 games in 4 days. Which means unless there is some fancy rotation juggling a sixth starter, likely Ponson, will start vs. Boston. If there is some juggling, Ponson will start vs. Baltimore. Not good either way, either a start at Boston or a start vs. his old team which I doubt likes him very much. At least if he starts against the Orioles he will pitch against them in Baltimore.

Nothing is decided yet people.

not only the dude behind the plate, but the umps in the field have been terrible too. The ump at 3rd blew a call early in the game where somebody from the sox hit a triple but he was called out at 3rd on a tough call, and then the yanks got called out at first on a double play as the ump went to give the safe sign he then stopped and called him out instead.

Hey he'd never get a vote from me this year with his era and the hrs he allows, but I promise you he'll get votes. I think it's really a three man race, Verlander, Halladay and Santana. Right now I really don't think anyone has a leg up and it would be one of the closest calls in AL Cy history. As for Verlander, it's not like he's off the pace at all. I doubt they'll look at his innings pitched as a detraction unless Halladay and Santana crush his numbers. And to tell the truth, both aren't that far ahead as Halladay hasn't been the bulldog he normally is. In fact, look at the amount of hits he's given up. It has been a good year, but not even close to his best. He's been pretty hitable this year.

Didn't matter but why pinch hit for Wilson?

HBox

Because Joe Torre has a Bernie Willaims fetish. This wasn't as bad putting in Bernie as a fucking defensive replacement last night, losing the DH in the process and then watching him turn a routine fly ball into a single. Damon had to run farther tonight to catch a hard line drive tonight with a bad groin and he got it. Bernie can't field anymore, and Joe Torre is the last one figuring this out.

As for tonight, Bernie and Wilson are comparable hitters. However, Bernie hadn't had a hit all season pinch hitting before tonight and in this case you were asking him after sitting down all night to come in and face a guy who can get it up to 100MPH, and Wilson had hit a double his last at bat. It makes no sense and Torre is extremely lucky it worked out, if you can even say it did. Maybe Wilson could ahve done more. Who knows. It still amde no fucking sense. The only way it MIGHT have is if Jenks was a lefty. Bernie can still hit lefties well. But so can Wilson.

Your biggest fear I think this year has to be if your bullpen can survive. Mo is another year older and he abuses Proctor and Mo. Hell, he's even been using Villone in garbage time and what the fuck for? Torre has always been a bullpen killer and I just don't understand it.

He hadn't had a start go less than 6 innings for motnhs before being traded. Not that I was expecting that tonight, but I don't know why Lidle isn't out there for the 5th.
