Unwilling to part with their best prospects, they are finding the trade market very barren. Yesterday, they added Sidney Ponson, who had been waived by the Cardinals, to the rotation. With Hideki Matsui and Gray Sheffield expected back in late August, the Yankees could make a strong run in September, provided they are still in the race. Adding a bat or an arm now would do a lot to ensure that, but it is also nice to see Brian Cashman refusing to deal away the youth of the team for a change. The problem is, with Detroit and Chicago streaking in the Central, the Yankees may only be able to reach the playoffs by winning the division and that seems unlikely at this point.

Holy crap.

This is written with a straight face when the Yankees are only 2 1/2 games out (at the time of being written) with EIGHTY-ONE GAMES LEFT IN THE SEASON, and NINE of those games against the Sox!

Ugh.

well, if you use Howie Math then it makes sense.

While the wild card race is still far off, it's definitely getting tighter with the yanks putting a beating on the White Sox right now. Yet ESD's prediction of the yankees having the best record in baseball at the end of the year is fucking hilarious. Has he ever been on with a prediction? I guess jinxing his team, crazy made up stories and terrible predictions are his thing.

So let do the math:

The Tigers are the current MLB best at 62-29. So let's say they hit some tough times for the first time all year and finish the rest of the year's schedule under .500 at 35-36 (not very possible at this point but who knows). That would still put them at 97-65 for the year.

This means the yankees at 52-36 would have to play 45-29 ball to finish the season just to keep pace and tie them at 97-65. I really don't see either one happening. Lucky for them and the Jays both color sox continue to struggle opening some AL East and Wild Card doors. Funny enough, the whole NL only has two teams with over 50 wins right now. The AL East has more themselves (3)! The AL Central has two and the Twins are only one away. The NL top to bottom is fucking weak. Only the Mets and Cards really have a shot...and that really depends on their aging pitchers.

Interesting article in today's post about some of the second half questions.

http://www.nypost.com/sports/heading_home_sports_joel_sherman.htm

Mods...I'm too lazy to read the rules, so please delete the link if it's not allowed.

Good article with some interesting points on NY prospects:

For most of the first half, Carlos Gomez appeared a prospect the Mets stupidly rushed from Low-A to Double-A as the 20-year-old battled major plate-discipline issues. Omar Minaya said they pushed the five-tool athlete "to challenge him." Over the last month, the challenge has been met to such a degree that a scout who saw him provided this rave:
"He's the young Raul Mondesi. He's the most explosive young player I think I've ever seen. I had him 3.9 [seconds] to first from the right-hand side, and he runs it hard every time. He wants to show off his speed. His arm is explosive. I saw him make a catch in the gap where he was playing shallow and had to cover about 70 yards. He hit a 95 mph fastball in his eyes on a line out of the park. The Good Lord touched him with ability not a lot of folks have. He's starting to figure out the level, not striking out as much, and he's just 20."

The sport is hardly universal in its praise for Gomez, but an AL farm director who also saw Gomez recently added, "He showed an adjustment to breaking balls with two strikes, which was impressive for his age and reputation. He has unbridled enthusiasm for the game. For me, he's on the verge of being an above-average player."

The scout, no fan of Lastings Milledge, said the Mets should trade Milledge because Gomez is better. But those close to Minaya say he sees Milledge as part of the Mets' core starting next year and would deal him only for Dontrelle Willis. And Minaya said proudly, "in [18-year-old] Fernando Martinez [hitting .321 at Low-A] we have a kid coming along who could be better than all of them."

The same scout also recently saw Eric Duncan, who not long ago was considered untouchable for the Yanks before struggling so much at Triple-A he had to be demoted to Double-A. His report was hardly glowing: "You can expand the strike zone on him and get him out all night. He has bat speed and tools to hit, but not an approach to hit. Defensively, he's not very good even after being switched to first base. I don't know how much power he is going to have. I wrote him up as an extra corner utility player/lefty bat. I no longer think he is an every-day guy."

why are the yanks so intent on keeping duncan. look at the infield that the yanks have: Phillips, Cano, Jeter, A-rod. none of these guys are going anywhere and a backup infielder can always be picked up. why not use him as trade bait. while i am on the trade subject why is the office looking for another big bat/outfielder? we need quality starting pitching. we need a solid 5th starter. why not make a move for the d-train? we would fit it perfect following Mussina and Johnson.

oh yeah, Pavanno may be back some time this decade, just intime for his retirement.

Andy Phillips isn't going anywhere? He is not a major league starting first baseman. He is only playing so much because of injuries. He is a backup. If Sheffield comes back Giambi will be playing a lot more in the field and Sheffield and Bernie will be splitting most DH time. Phillips would be a defensive replacement. He is another Shane Spenser, a dead fastball hitter waiting for big league pitchers to figure him out.

As for Duncan, he's only 21. Be patient. He's not a bust yet, and if that scout's take is accurate his problem is approach, something that can be changed. The scout even admits he has all tools to hit. Not making a direct comparison here, but Ryan Howard didn't make the majors until he was 25. Bernie was a late bloomer too. Let's not go nuts trading especially since there isn't much out there to trade for anyway.

Here's a concept: wouldn't it be nice to see all the teams involved stay put and finish the fucking season with players on their team or in their system. About 24 teams do this pretty much every year, while a few others constantly cover mistakes or can afford to fix injuries. It'll never happen, but it would be nice to see the Jays, Sox and yanks finish this thing on the up and up. In fact, the Jays will probably make a move for a pitcher and or SS/2nd baseman.

As for Duncan, I agree with Hbox on giving him time. Yet I also agree with stu in that if he brings you something of value ranking higher the his current potential looks, you might want to make the move. However, is this the year to fleece the system in New York? I say no. Stay pat on big prospects unless it's a huge name like Zito/Willis. Don't be fooled, those two are huge pieces in this thing. Both will surely cost too much, but Zito is definitely gone. Willis however may not.

But I think its safe to predict one of them will. Sheff will be wanting to show he can still play so somebody gives him a contract next year, so he'll be highly motivated. Matsui is a total unknown. He's never been out before for any legnth of time. And in both cases its a wrist injury, which is essential to hitting.

If only one can play, I'm hoping Matsui is the one. He's a good situational hitter and will make the lineup more efficient. I trust him more with men on base, though Sheff's stats are good too. I also hope that Matsui sees alot more time as DH. Melky is a FAR superior defensive outfielder (another assist today, 8 puts him among league leaders) and has a knack for getting big hits and getting on base. Melky seems to always be either at the start or in the middle of big rallies, and he has an excellent OBP, consistently 100 points higher than his BA.

About making a trade, Cashman said this week that he "fully expects" Pavano to pitch again this year . And Dotel threw a perfect inning in rehab today, so you have a reliever and starter coming within the next month or so.

PLus how many times have we seen guys who were effective for another team come over here and wet the bed? I'd only make a deal if it helped the team long term, which means Willis. I dont believe Zito is going anywhere. The A's are leading their division and Billy Beane is happy to take a teams first round pick from free agent compensation rules.

Zito, i dont know about. he could go either way. With Boras as his agent he will be leaving oakland. does anyone think that Smoltz would be a solid addition to the yanks rotation? just wondering. Maybe its because i am a mark for good pitching vs. the power hitting, but i just think a solid rotation in the playoffs is more intimadating. you can score 15 runs with your lineup but if your pitching sucks they can give up 16 runs. then all your hitting still means that you lost the game.

This upcoming four game series against the yanks will be a huge one, especially for the Jays. It could mean getting right to the top of the standings or at least close for the Jays, and probably the lead for the yanks pending on if one can take 3 of the 4. I like the Jays chances with our probable starters of Halladay, Burnett, Lilly and probably a rookie named Marcum. Halladay vs. Mussina, Burnett vs. Wright, Lilly vs. ? (probably Wang), and ? (probably Marcum) vs. ? (probably Ponson). Not sure if I'm right on the last two nyy starters, but I assume that it'll be those two. Not really sure why Wang isn't listed but understand the Ponson thing.

Rios and Hillenbrand should be back for the series as well adding to the Jays bench depth. Can't fucking wait.

Well, outside of the first inning jitters, the Ponson experiment worked out fairly well. Gave you 6+ innings and 4 runs. Maybe not a great ERA but thats a chance to win, and/or not blow out your bullpen. Which is more than we had w/Chacon.
Since Spoon is gone, I think we can all agree that money ahd absolutely no role in any of the Yankees championships. It was all heart and good scouting. Am I right fellas?
It was all heart and good scouting. Am I right fellas?

I think it was a combination of scouting (domestic and international), development, and paying the right players. Specifically, if you look at '96, they made a few moves before and during the season that seemed to be ok, but not great. Here's a rundown of what I remember (feel free to call me out on anything that's wrong):

Trades

- Joe Girardi from the Rockies for (I can't remember). I didn't think he would be anything special, but he was an integral part of the team.

- Gerald Williams and Bob Wickman to the Brewers for Graeme Lloyd and Pat Listach. Listach turned out to be hurt and was returned in exchange for an SP whose name I can't remember. Lloyd was cluth for them down the stretch and in the playoffs. He neutralized a lot of lefty hitters. Remember Klesko trying to bunt against him???

- David Cone (from '95 and technically resigned as a FA), but he was the glue of that rotation and his game 3 performance from the WS is forgotten by many, even though I thought it was a turning point of the series.

- Tino Martinez and Jeff Nelson (and Mecir) from the Mariners for Russ Davis and Sterling Hitchcock (I think). There's not much to say about this one. Without the first two guys, they probably don't make the playoffs.

I'm probably missing some, but the bit players they got for nothing was what I also loved about this team. They were a team of great players and were the foundation for the subsequent teams. I think they're slowly getting back to this mindset after a few years of just getting the biggest names.

Think of how many players from that team were legitmate stars in their prime before that season started. Wetteland, maybe Bernie and O'Neill, Cone, Key.

Sorry I just realized this was a long, rambling post with no point, but I'm posting it anyway since I took so long to write it.

What I mean is that he's going to get an ND at best because he's thrown 129 pitches, so there's no way he's back in the 9th. And as I was writing that, the 8th was just about over. Never said they couldn't win, just saying Johnson pitched well enough to win and won't get won. You can't say that doesn't suck for him given all the crap he's taken this year for not "stepping up" with all of the injuries/pitching uncertainty.

From reading the article, it sounds like only the manager had a problem with him. The players certainly didn't seem thrilled that he was gone.

From what I'm reading, it's the other way around in Toronto. Everyone was shocked, Wells was sayin how Shea was always smilin and jokin around. Riccardi also apparently ripped wells and a couple others right before the all star break for playing bad. Alot of what I read gave the impression that alot of guys there aren't so happy.

Everyone was shocked that they dumped Shea, so he couldn't have bothered people too much

There has been increased pressure on Toronto to win this year
after general manager J.P. Ricciardi spent millions to acquire

offseason.

Ricciardi chastised the Blue Jays just before the All-Star
break, saying his 3-4-5 hitters were killing the club. Wells objected to the comments when asked about them
at the All-Star game.

Sounds to me like somebody spent alot of money and is now worried about his job. You dont backstab t heart of your lineup like that unless you're feeling desperate.

I can't believe that these clueless announcers are shocked that Gibbons uses the bullpen so much. Do they pay any attention at all to Torre? They express shock that Speier is being used in his 44th game. Both Proctor AND Farnsworth have appeared in more games, 47 each, and that will be more for Farnsworth if he is used tonight.
He's guaranteed now to pitch 2 innings no matter what happens, which guarantees he won't be available at some point in this series. And you don't have your strongest portion of your lineup coming up. If they lose this game now and waste two innings of Rivera it is an utter disaster.

Compare these two stat lines:
Player A: .316 average, 21 home runs, 79 RBIs, 63 runs, .388 on-base percentage
Player B: .284 average, 21 home runs, 71 RBIs, 67 runs, .386 on-base percentage

The first? National League MVP candidate David Wright. The second? Rodriguez.

So although their stats are virtually identical, Wright (who has 11 errors vs. Rodriguez's
18) is having what is considered a terrific season because the Mets have a double-digit lead
in the NL East -- and he makes less than a half-million dollars.

I'd happily take A-Rod at SS and even let Neifi "Soul-Eater" Perez cover 3rd through his contract next year. If the Cubs snagged A-Rod and went after Carlos Lee in the offseason like it's talked about (if he isn't locked up by the Brewers by then) or they finally pull the trigger on picking up Soriano like it's rumored every year, I might be a little closer to getting off the ledge.

Maybe.

Their problem is having no reliable mop-up man, resulting in any time a started shits the bed and can't get beyond the first 3 innings, the game rapidly spirals out of control. ok, enough.....fuck the cubs. nice win tonight for the yanks!

I said Ramirez wasn't one of the three best players on the Cubs, you said he was, I countered with three better players, you called it a strawman. What?

And what decent pitchers are available? I haven't heard about any.

Aramis Ramirez has had 3 30+ HR, no 40+ HR seasons. A-Rod has 9 30+ HR seasons, and 8 in a row. He has 7 40+ HR seasons. He has 2 50+ HR seasons. These are not comparable power numbers. And Yankee Stadium does not help right handed power hitters. If Ramirez "feeds" off the rest of the lineup, well, there's not much in the Yankee lineup to feed off of at the moment without A-Rod.

Jacque Jones is not a player you can count on. He's just the latest guy putting up numbers in his walk year. A half season rental doesn't add much value in a trade for A-Rod. I have no interest, and I'm sure the yankee front office doesn't either, in handing him a long term contract, not with Matsui already under a long term deal and Cabrera in the wings and Sheffield's option next year. He's worth nearly nothing to the Yankees. If the Yanks were interested in a long term OFer, they could have Abreu without giving up A-Rod or any significant prospects, simply because they can afford Abreu's contract where there might not be any other teams willing to do what it takes to get Abreu to waive his no trade.

The Yanks need some depth at the back of the bullpen, true. In the context of trading A-Rod, it doesn't add up to much.

Prospects. I don't know how good the Cubs prospects are, but they are not worth A-Rod. A team in a pennant race does no trade away their best hitter in the middle of it. Forget prospects.

None of this matters anyway. Aaron Guiel is gonna carry them into the promised land. Fuck Jacque Jones.

But really, I'd rather wait on and hope for Sheffield, Matsui, Dotel and Pavano to return rather than go and trade the best hitter on the team.

Sal makes an out: The ditty that plays when Mario dies
Sal gets a hit or throws out a base-stealer: The "power up" ditty when you get a mushroom or a fire-flower.

From listening to Buster Onley on ESPN today, if the Yanks (or anyone else) are going to get Abreau, it'll happen by mid Saturday, because he has a no trade clause and a deal would need to be in place by then in order to get that worked out by the trade deadline. I think they get him. Theres not alot of other teams willing to take that salary, and he wants to be dealtand the team wants to deal him and his contract so they can use that money elsewhere.

The deal will depend on how much of the salary the Yanks are willing to take. I think they get him. Theres not alot of other teams willing to take that salary, and he wants to be dealtand the team wants to deal him and his contract so they can use that money elsewhere.

The deal will depend on how much of the salary the Yanks are willing to take. If they take it all, they'll give up little in prospects. Maybe Eric Duncan plus, who they are down on anyway.

That really wouldn't be a great trade...I think Abreu has been a great player, but he's definitely declining and his power hitting numbers are in the toilet (for him) and have been sliding for a while.

Watch, I say that and the Cubs will go and get him and think everything will be "fixed."

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!

Their problem
is having no reliable mop-up man, resulting in any time a started shits
the bed and can't get beyond the first 3 innings, the game rapidly
spirals out of control. That leads to some of the embarrassing blow
outs the Yanks have suffered this year and last.

This man is a genius.

I don't understand how the fuck the yankee fans could boo ARod when he already had two hits that day and the game was already out of hand.

Looks increasingly like Proctor and prospects for Abreau and Lieber.

I HATE to give up Proctor, but its a net plus for the team. Solves the outfield ands 5th starter problem. I guess it'll be Villone for the 7th, who's been very good and has Torre's trust. If he's off, its go to Farnsworth, and that's hit or miss.

Weakens the bullpen, I hope there's side trade to fill Proctors spot, but even if there is reivers are so hit and miss. You often dont know what youre getting.

You often dont know what youre getting.

I can't see them dealing Proctor without having another trade lined up to bring in a bullpen arm. The bullpen is a much bigger problem right now than the offense, and Proctor is one of the few reliable arms out there. Farnsworth has developed some back issues, and they say Dotel is now at least 10 days away (but I don't think you can count on him for anything at this point).

With Matsui due back in a few weeks, Abreu becomes a fill in for Sheff. that means that Melky heads to the bench. If you look at Abreu vs. Melky from the point since Melky came up in May, they are very similar. Abreu holds a big edge in RBI and OBP. The RBI can be partially attributed to where he hits in the lineup vs. Melky's spot in the order. The power numbers are the same (4hr's each).

The only upside there is that they would have a solid bat on the bench, which they've been lacking the past few years.

Here's a thought to solve the 7th inning

Phillip Hughes

He's getting up in innings for a minor leaguer, so a bullpen stint will be a way to keep his innings down and still get some use out of him. Plus, Minnesota credits the success of both Liriano and Santana to bringing them up slowly by using them in the bullpen first, and letting them get their feet wet. We should only have such results as they've had with those two.

I doubt you'll see him at all this year. Cashman said he wouldn't even see AAA this year, much less the majors. His reply when asked if Hughes would be promoted to the majors this season was "no chance." He's only 20 though, so it's better if he gets a couple hundred innings thrown in the minors.

Abreu's been dealt to the Yankees (tenatively)
The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees have a tentative deal to send Phillies right fiedler Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported Sunday.
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- their No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith. The Phillies will also pick one other minor-leauge player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on responsibility for Abreu and Lidle's contracts.

Lidle's pitched pretty well in his last few starts, not that it'll be tough to top Ponson.

It's good to hear they didn't give up JB Cox either. He's another fairly good pitching prospect too.
