Well the Yanks are the only team who hasn't been shut out so far. I don't know if there was ever a team to go thru an entire season without being shut out.

Anybody know of that stat?

Chacon returns Friday, and I assume Wright's spot in the roatation will be skipped for Jack Skellington tomorrow.
Antonio Perez just hit a HR off of Randy Johnson. His batting average before the at bat was .030. That's right, he was 1 for 33 on the season. For fuck's sake.

Best stuff I read this morning

Torre spoke yesterday about Johnson being "still scheduled" for his
next start Wednesday, which makes it sound as though something could
happen to change that. Perhaps even a turn through the rotation without
him? In any case, you'd think that the starting corps would most be in
need of an in-season upgrade.

About making any trades

But reinforcements are always welcome, and Cashman's history indicates
he'll deliver something new. Their biggest acquisitions, nevertheless,
could be Chacon today, and Octavio Dotel, perhaps this month, off the
disabled list. And Hideki Matsui is talking about an August return.

If he can make it back in August, and play well, the Yanks should be fine as is. I dont think Bernie can hold up for a full season, and if he gets a blow toward the end he'll be in good shape for the playoffs. Sheffield I dont expect back this year. His swing is so violent that wrist surgery kills his game. He may try to come back to show pepople he can still play, since if he doesn't he likely wont get any offers next year if he doesn't. If we get either Matsui or Sheffield back in September and playing well, we'll be fine.

As far as the pitching goes, Dotel and Chacon should bolster the bullpen. And if Johnson continues to deteriorate, I guess we can hold our breath for Carl Pavano to come back (Scheduled to start throwing again June 15th). Maybe no deal is the best move at this time.

Have I mentioned that John Flaherty sucks?

I mean really, he was a Yankee for about 5 minutes. Was never a big time player and has a lousy deadpan voice. Some of his comments are good, but he just doesn't have the resume to make me care enough. Ands Leiter should be doing Mets games, not Yankee.

Fucking Johnson...doesn't even like Jorge, but he plunks Perez as retaliation for Jorge getting hit (which was in no way intentional) & gets himself tossed out of a game he's pitching his best since coming to NY. And I thought I couldn't hate him more than I already did. If the bullpen blows this lead Johnson should get the loss just for being an asshole.

Fucking Yankee pitchers don't throw at other teams when they should, but Big Ugly chooses his best game of the season to throw at someone when it shouldn't have been an issue to begin with.

Another thing from todays game. The fans did a really nice job supporting A-Rod, who's been a bit of a pinata lately and is mired in a terrible slump. When he came to the plate, many fans stood up and cheered, when he reached safely on an error, they gave him a standing O, and gave him another when he got a hit later in the game. Nice to see the grownups outnumber the drunken idiots in the crowd. Very classy move by them.
And now the Yanks are in first place despite the four game losing streak. Looks like it might be a three-way dance come September with the Yanks, Sox, and Jays possibly switching places for most of the season.

Is Dotel ready yet?

Now I understand why they cut Small this morning and brought up the reliever TJ Beam. This bullpen is sucking fumes (and donkey balls) right now. And when Mo gives up a lead + 2 runs, I give up. They couldn't hold a 7 run lead today between Chacon (who has reverted back to his old sucky self) and the pen.

Torre's 6 will go a few years after he does, Jeter's 2, A-Rods 13. There are too many clear HOFers to start retiring the borderline guys. I expect Bernie's #51 will be retired, I just think its getting ridiculous. You need 40 available to make a roster, and I expect the Yanks to be in business 100 years from now. You're going to get to a point where guys will be wearing triple digits, and there's no room in monument park for new statues. But Bernie is both beloved (like Rizzuto, Mattingly and Munson) and is so high on the Club Stats that I expect he'll get his # retired. Thus, one advanced scout speculated, "Zito could only go to a big-market team with the confidence it will win a bidding war to keep him long-term." Don't discount Toronto, however.

Mets GM Omar Minaya has confided to friends that he thinks he can get a top starter, though he found the initial price for Zito (Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman) unappetizing. The Mets feel they have an advantage in locking up Zito long-term because of his strong relationship dating back to Oakland with Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson.

Yankee GM Brian Cashman has indicated to his contemporaries that Robinson Cano, Chien-Ming Wang and Philip Hughes are unavailable. If that is the case, he will not land a top starter and could end up emphasizing a corner outfielder and reliever. "It is possible," one Yankee official said, "that we cannot get a starter better than Carl Pavano on the market, so we just have to hope that Pavano gives us something."

Translation, dont hold your breath for the Yanks to make any big deals in the next two weeks.

Both Zito and Soriano have made it very clear the would like to play for the Yankees, so it doesn't make sense to pay alot for them now. Wait for Dotel, wait for Pavano.

I agree.

And for my question about Bernie being retired, thanks to you and the others for replying.
One more thing about retired numbers -

A good portion of players who have had their numbers retured are excellent Yankee players but are NOT Hall of Famers - Guidry, Mattingly, Munson (well, his retirement was mandated), Elston Howard, Maris, Billy Martin - which bolsters the case even more for Bernie and O'Neill, as they are probably not HOF bound.

Bernie's stats trump Jeter's by far right now, even though I know he's 5 years older.

Bernie has played in 420 mores games (more than two full seasons), has had 1200+ more ABs, and only has 250 more hits?! Granted, Bernie is so high on many all-time Yankee lists it's amazing each time one is brought up.
My point is simple and you've both taken it the wrong way. Bernie has to have his number retired by the Yankees at this point. He's one of the top four players a this past dominant Yankee era and was at one point their biggest power bat. Jeter will of course have more hits in his career bc of his speed to make infield hits and he's a slightly better hitter. Yet Bernie has the more feared power bat, especially in the past and was the main run producer. They play different roles and both quite well. I think people jump on Jeter, and kill him in Crip's case, bc he's the "wonder boy of NY. When in fact he's struck out more this year and the last few years then Arod. Yet he never gets shit bc he's Jeter. Sure he's had some big moments, but even Rance Mullinicks and Candy Maldonado would if they played in the postseason every year on loaded teams. Say what you want but it's not by chance the NYY get so many greats, they either take them or make their own better bc they're surrounded by studs all the time. Hell, KC from the 50's to the 70's were the Yankee's major league farm team. That's fair though.

Bottom line, if Bernie's number has to be retired too. Don't worry about Mo though, it's already retired that fucking douche.

If your point was only that Bernie's #51 will be reitred, I completely agree. As much as the retired numbers section is getting out of hand, you can't deny that he was a lynch-pin to a dynasty & ranks on all-time Yankee lists of doubles, RBI, hits, etc. at levels you almost wouldn't believe.

Not being a fan has absolutely nothing to do with it. In fact, it makes me much less biased. I was defending the fact that Bernie is every bit as deserving as Jeter to get his number retired. Why the fuck do you keep going on about the HOF? I haven't touched or mentioned it once. I think it's obvious that I was defending Bernie and trying to add Posada to the debate. In the process I was pointing out that Jeter gets a pass on sooo many levels bc he's Jeter. His fielding is average at best, and isn't half as good as Yankee fans make him out to be. You can rest assured that Bernie was every bit, if not more important to the most recent Yankee WS teams as compared to any other minus Mo. He was the producer in the lineup, and without him they'd be in trouble.

So, you must believe this is unthinkable. Not so. Just bc he hit .300 a few times and throws his helmet doesn't make him a great player. You're comparing this ass to the greats of all time in Yankeedom and all MLB for that matter. It is easily up for debate. If I was attacking Mo then I'd be wrong.

So six seasons of plus .300 is all it takes? Arod only needs a few more huh? You're right, O'Neil was a baseball god once he got himself on Jim Leyritz's special coffee. By these standards Wade Boggs only needs one more .300 season with the Yanks to get his number retired. Let's start the push here for a real Yankee like Boggs to get his number retired. It's different for O'Neil bc he came from Cincy?

Speaking of tired, off to bed. I'll pick this up tomorrow.

But as someone who has watched nearly every game Derek Jeter has ever played, to say Jeter is the best defensive shortstop of this era is just as asinine and just as inaccurate as saying he is "average at best."

Bad night for the locals. THat was the best shot the Mets had with the kid Lester going. Now they face Beckett and Schilling. Yanks cant beat up on weak teams like the Sox have lately. Yanks take 2 of 3 from the Nats and Phils, Sox sweep both. Now they have to beat Smoltz to take 2 of 3 from the Braves. What worries me more is they're getting good starting pitching, the problem has been the bullpen and scoring runs.

Yanks are 4 back in the loss, and if they dont start playing better soon, this season could get away from them. They finally get a good start from Wright that goes more than 5 innings, and a reliever comes in and immediately gives up a run. And god-damned Farnsworth sucks! I'm talking about THIS YEAR, which is why I said in the last 80 chances, and not the last 3 years. If you dont think he's choked in almost every big spot he's had this year then you're clueless. Because it only makes him press harder. And if would stop trying to force the game and let it come to him (do less) he would do better in those spots. He doesn't need to hit HR's in big spots, he just needs to get base hits and fans would leave him alone. That I would agree with, and thats why I dont boo him when I'm at a game. But I guess his ego is such he wants to hit the HR, and when you're trying to hit HR's, you almost never do.

Some players are more than their #'s, you have to see them everyday to appreciate what they bring to a team.
It was the final game of the series following them being swept. I was at the stadium and did not hear it firsthand but my brother tivoed the game and even called me to ask me what the hell that was all about. It was quite audible over the YES broadcast, and I doubt that the contingent of A's fans present would be able to get on the mics. I also watched the end of it when my brother brought it up and it was absolutely there.

Stugots, essentially that is my point. Your only real duty as a fan is to root for your team or organization. Booing certainly does not further that goal in any way shape or form. The idea, however, that Yankees fans go to see their team win not play is quite pompous and arrogant. Every single fan wants to see their team win, you don't go to a game to see your damn team lose. The difference is that at places like Busch Stadium, fans showed up even when their team was losing.

The people booing now are the same ones who suddenly showed up in 96 after a decade of having nothing to do with the Yankees. The same ones who reminisce about Don Mattingly when that stadium was completely barren back then and they wanted to know nothign about the Yankees. I was there I saw it firsthand many times.

So I'm sorry that I don't feel that my team has the best fans in the world. They don't. I am certainly not going to kid myself into thinking they do. Making the postseason is not the right of every Yankees fan, I don't care how bad the owner wants to win or how much of a payroll you invest in your team. Anyone who watched the Yankees in the eighties knows that. What did George's desire to be the best just suddenly reappear in 96? No, it was there when they were bad too.

God I would love to see you root for an organization like the Cubs.

Well, guess what. If my favorite actor puts out a shit movie, I'm not going to see it. And if my favorite Baseball team puts out a shit product, dont be surprised when attendance goes down. I'll still watch, but not as much. And you're full of shit if you want to claim that you went out of your way to watch them everyday when they sucked. Now the games are more meaningful, I and alot of other people and plan my days around them. Welcome to planet Earth. Weather's great.

And I dont expect the Yanks to win it all every year, and if you've read any of my posts you'd know that I wasn't even bothered by the 2001 series, despite all the drama. Cant win em all. But as long as they're keeping score, you do everything you can to win, period. And Mariano's not getting any younger, so I have an increased sense of urgency in the past few years, because you almost certainly wont see one like him again.

And I WAS AT the last game of the Oakland series, when Randy got bombed and didn't hear one Yankees suck chant. And even if there was, if the team is playing like shit, they deserve to get booed. You love ST Louis and Boston so much? MOVE. New York isn't a kissy face town. Tino Martinez was booed mercilessly his first year w/the Yanks. Jeter was booed a few years back when he was struggling, Reggie used to get booed AT HOME when he struck out (which he did alot) and even Mantle was booed towards the end of his career. I'm been reading a biography of Ruth lately and BABE RUTH was booed at the peak of his career, and alot at the end of it. This has NOTHING to do with newcomer bandwagon Yankee fans. ITS CALLED BASEBALL. And your precious Red Sox fans used to boo Ted Williams so much he wouldn't even tip his cap when he hit a HR on his last AB. Grow up.

I know. I'm actually torn between my team and one of my all time favorite plyers. I hope he pitches well and they beat the bullpen. Or it just ends 1-0.

Kay had an unbelievable stat just now. From July 1st of last year to today (basically one calendar year) Giambi has hit 51 HR's and had 128 RBI's. Wow.

Another thing caught my attention. One topic of the YES pre game was "Were the Mets exposed against the Bosox?" and all three agreed they were, including Lieter.

Its good to see A-Rod swinging the bat better lately, but I'm getting an increasing feeling that this just isn't thier year. No Wild Card to fall back on, and with all the injuries they've had the lineup can be weak some days, especially when Bernie and Posada get days off and are replaced with Bubba and Stinnett. Pitching wise, its pretty clear Johnson will have one of these blowouts every so often even when he's going well. And they just cant make up the deficits anymore with their depleted lineup.

4 games out, no need to panic yet with 3 months left in the season. But The Red Sox just came off a 12 game winning streak. I dont think the Yanks are capable of that, and by the time they are (in September) it may be too late.

Best hope right now is for the BoSox babies (Lester, Papelbon, Hanson) to come back down to earth as the league adjusts to them. Or maybe Beckett will have one of his patented 4 week stints on the DL, like he usually does. If the Bosox babies are for real, then were in big trouble.

BTW- Anyone else notice A-Rod crediting Lou Pinella with helping him get out of his current slump? Hmmmm. Intresting.

If Torre misses the playoffs this year, I doubt he'll be back. Its been 11 years for him, and Pinella has decided to take this year off and has stated many times returning as Yankee manager is his dream job. It wouldn't surprise me if George let him know last off season that the job would be waiting for him if things dont go well this year. We'll see.

im not sure if it is just a yankee thing (actually a giambi and arod
thing) or all of mlb, but players take way too many curtain
calls. it seems like curtain calls used to be after you maybe hit
2 or 3 homeruns, in a big game- basically a very rare thing. now it
seems like arod and giambi take one every time they hit a home
run. a rod just did it in the 3rd fucking inning.
They've won quite a few consecutive series and Arod is just now getting out of his slump, so things appear to be on the upswing.

On another bright note, the Yankees today signed the concensus number 1 available international prospect, Jesus Montero. He is a 16 year old Venezulean Catcher who apparantly has a big time bat.

"He's 'the' top International free agent this year," Carlos Rios told PinstripesPlus.com on March 17th. Here's Glavine's last four years with the Braves vs. the his first with the Mets. The biggest difference was the team he played for being drastically different and not able to give him the run support like he has now. He's pretty much been the same pitcher with some ups and downs that are only natural. In fact, there was one period I remember him pitching fucking awesome through around ten starts or more while going 1-2 or something. I'll give you some credit on the discussion about retired yank numbers (your points on O'Neil and Marris), but you're off here.

That is why if a guy who is going to go down as one of the best players to step foot on the field doesn't hit a ball out every other at bat, he is going to be jeered and booed. Here is a spectacular player who got into the biggest slump of his career and rather than try and pull him through it, people simply jumped on him. Not only that, Yankee fans are in large part INCREDIBLY uninformed and just spout out stupid ass statements that they simply present as facts. Has Arod been good this season close and late? No, and that is almost entirely due to him going through the worst slump of his career. When these people want to preach about how the man has NEVER come through, they should actually look at facts. If not for Alex the Yankees don't make it out of Minnesota two years ago. It's that simple, they get tossed in the first round. If not for Alex last season, the Yankees lose the division and don't make it into the playoffs.

It pains me to say it but Yankee fans have indeed become fickle brats, not necessarily the older ones but the new ones who have hopped on because it is the trendy thing to do. Every time I hear preaching about the great Yankee fan I have to laugh, Cardinals fans are the best fans in the game hands down and really it is not even close.&nbs

i think the deal with Mattingly is that he never left the organization for greener pastures. i am sure that there were teams drooling over him as he became a free agent (anyone have any info please share as I do not remember, those were the years where i was rebeling against my parents, and i spited them by not following the game that i love and the team that i love, yeah, i showed them), but he stayed in NY.

Go to any high school gym and you'll see average kids playing basketball doing things that could not be done a decade or two ago.

Actually I think this has more to do with the amatuer draft rules (which typically hurts the Yanks who generally draft at the bottom) and clubs are looking for younger talent either overseas or before they hit the draft. But the younger they are, the higher the risk. For every Miguel Cabrera I'm sure there's 100 16 year olds who never pan out.

And Spoon, your Blue Jays have to overpay for everything because of Canada's insane tax rates. In high tax NYC, the Yanks do too, but not as bad as Canada.

Threw out 2 baserunners with beautiful throws to 2nd.

And Melky was the hero with the bat last night. Twice he took the hard throwing Kasmir the other way, once for an out and once for a double. But that shows me he's making adjustments to who's pitching. Plus another terrific catch in the outfield, saving a double. I dont care if he has no pop, I love this kid.

You know, this much maligned Yankee pitching staff has actually been very solid lately. 4th in the league in ERA and runs allowed. Wright and Unit have been solid with the occasional clunker. Wang and Moose have been their most consistent starters. And the bullpen is finally getting the rest it needs.

Let me be a Pat Positive here.

Do you think the White Sox were freaking out just as much when Contreras landed in their laps?

Give the guy a shot before you kill him. Just because a guy is a drunken driver doesn't make him a horrific, horrible person. Some of the biggest assholes I know have a clean criminal record.

It's not about him being a drunk, it's about him sucking.

Let me do my John Sterling...

IT'S A SONIC BOOM FROM GUIEL, AND THE YANKEES LEAD 3-2!

I love when the Yankees win and the Jays and Sox lose. Especially when the Sox lose convincingly.

This blurb at The Gothamist yesterday really pissed me off:

On the other side of town, the Yankees are in survival mode. Unwilling
to part with their best prospects, they are finding the trade market
very barren. Yesterday, they added Sidney Ponson, who had been waived
by the Cardinals, to the rotation. With Hideki Matsui and Gray
Sheffield expected back in late August, the Yankees could make a strong
run in September, provided they are still in the race. Adding a bat or
an arm now would do a lot to ensure that, but it is also nice to see
Brian Cashman refusing to deal away the youth of the team for a change.
The problem is, with Detroit and Chicago streaking in the Central, the
Yankees may only be able to reach the playoffs by winning the division
and that seems unlikely at this point.

Holy crap.

This is written with a straight face when the Yankees are only 2 1/2 games out (at the time of being written) with EIGHTY-ONE GAMES LEFT IN THE SEASON, and NINE of those games against the Sox!

Ugh.
