The Sox are just as hopeful (or anxious) about Josh Beckett,
who has the chance to be a young Schilling -- or just Josh Beckett,
who's won more than nine games just once in his career and whose ERA on
the road last year was almost two runs higher than at Pro Player
Stadium. There's a whispering campaign under way about Beckett's
health, as well, focused on his right shoulder that's in rougher shape
than anyone at Fenway is letting on. It's no secret that at least one
Red Sox executive was ready to kill the Beckett trade with Florida
after an MRI of the right-hander's shoulder revealed excessive wear and
tear.

Thats from Bob Klapish's latest column on ESPN.com. Bob's first rate, if he reports it its usually good info.

I do remember Johnny Damon saying "I will never play for the Yankees".

He actually supposedly had a hand shake agreement with Jed and Ben when they were in co- gm mode to not trade him this season, according to the Boston Globe following his deal being signed. I totally agree that there is no loyalty in this sport and Bronson was the idiot who agreed to it. It still says a whole lot about the Red Sox though when his agent was ADAMANT about him not signing that deal, and Jed and Ben tried endlessly to assure him everything would work out if he signed. Going as far as to use the popular Red Sox excuse that no one on the team gets no trade clauses, and they can't make him the exception.

And in regards to Bulldog I know it hasn't been said here in this thread specifically, but I know Damon being a disloyal prick has been proclaimed on other threads. Like it or not, this is an organization who plays that card pretty often. They did it with Clemens, they they did it with Pedro, they did it with Boggs to some extent, and they most certainly did it with Damon.

It is quite frankly just the ESPN mindset that brainwashes people into always thinking that the team is ALWAYSin the right and the player is in the wrong because he makes alot of money. Sportscenter pounds it into everyone's that TO is a disloyal fuck and the Eagles front office is in the right, yet NFL teams simply toss players on the street every year because they had a subpar season whether they signed a long term contract or not.

the thing about Damon was not that he left. I dont think anyone would have been mad at that really, just that he went to a place he specifically said he would never play just made him look like a scumbag.

As far as Clemens, how exactly did they play the disloyalty card? They got rid of Clemens, and the management said he was done and in the twilight of his career. Nobody got mad until he went to the Yanks AFTER Toronto, and that was only the fans who were mad.

At the point of Clemens going to Toronto, he took ALOT of heat from not just the organization but the fans as well. They completely turned against him in large part due to the media insuinating he was dogging it and taking time off over minor injuries. At his tail end he was still putting up great numbers, but since the team didn't have that translate into wins he took the blame. All of that was further fueled by him being TRADED, not signed, to the Yankees. The rancor towards him, however, was totally there before him ever puttin on a Yankee uniform.

From Buster Olney's blog

(Willie Mo) Pena is one of those players who is better in theory than in
reality. His home run ratio looks great on paper. But on a daily basis,
he's been the kind of player who can kill a team, with his strikeouts
and his defense (which scouts say is poor and getting worse). Opposing
managers, catchers and pitchers will rush to work around the hitters in
front of him to get to Pena, because of his strikeouts.

He's also played in a great offensive ballpark in Cincinnati,
where he has hit .262, compared to .234 on the road, and Pena is the
kind of hitter, so far in his career, that good pitchers exploit.
Looked at his numbers against the best pitchers in his own division,
and the results are brutal.

Versus Kerry Wood, Carlos Zambrano, Mark Prior, Andy Pettitte, Roy Oswalt, Brad Lidge, Ben Sheets, Chris Capuano, Chris Carpenter, Jason Isringhausen, Mark Mulder, Oliver Perez and Zach Duke, these are Pena's stats: 120 at-bats, 33 hits, four homers and 53 strikeouts.

Three of the homers were against lefties (two vs. Perez, one vs.
Capuano). In 68 at-bats against right-handed pitchers on this list, he
has 33 punchouts and one homer. These numbers suggest he was totally
overmatched.

Seriously, the Sox added solid/great fielder where you need them most via Loretta at 2nd and Gonzo at SS. Overall they are indeed first in the AL! I know I'm risking sounding like BDC, but I hope the Jays make a big bid at Vidro for 2nd base so the Jays could move Hill back to his natural position at SS and solidify their defense up the middle. Hell, who knows, perhaps the D-Backs will be up for trading Hudson back to the Jays if out of it in the NL West later on, but I suspect nobody is ever out of it in the NL West. Bottom line is Russ Adams throws worse than Chuck Knoblach in his prime with the yanks!! If it wasn't for Weeks, he'd be the leading SS in errors. If the Jays can get a handle on its infield dilema, they have a decent fielding 3rd baseman in Glaus, a solid infielder in Hill pending on where he ends up, a great fielding 1st baseman in Overbay, and a gold glove catcher in Molina. They would definately be smart to make a move of some sort and the Vidro thing would be awesome, yet costly. I'm sure they might be interested in working with Adams, but they'd also want one of our young arms in the farm system and I'm not sure it'd be worth it. From what I know, they don't have much middle infield prospects ready to make the MLB jump.

So in conclusion, the Red Sox were savy in realizing that if there are any positions worth sacrificing offense on, it's SS and 2nd base. I really like a team like they've formed in Boston, great D and solid starting pitching.

yea how does that explain the teams who have already seen him 3 or 4 times, plus the times they may have seen him the last month of last year. The only team who has even really touched him is Toronto, and Boston cant seem to find anyone to stop them. He has been amazing, especially considering the career coaster he has been on. He wasnt a starter, he was a closer til Boston got him, thats why its been no problem. They were tryin to make him a starter.
Rumor has it that the Sox will pick up Javy Lopez from the Orioles, if he can clear waivers. He should be a better option than Mirabelli and whoever else they have for the next month. The only other hurdle would be the Orioles actually making a trade.

yea those were guys who couldnt keep throwing. they get over used. most o f the lack of closer success is because its far worse on the arm to do that and throw that hard almost every day then it is to throw 6-8 innings ever 5 days with a short toss in between

I just looked at the Jays, Sox and Yanks schedule in August and I have to say the Sox easily have the roughest look. In fact, I'll go as far as saying the Jays will narrow the gap bt the two in the month while the Yanks probably run away with the title. Nothing hurts me more than saying that, but it really doesn't look good for the AL East challengers. I just hope the Jays can get Chaucin back in time to make up some good ground in both races and at least make it interesting. However, take a look at their September sched and you'll realize they'll need Dave Steib and Pat Hentgen in their prime for a solid September run. Holy fuck is that a rough string of games. At least the rotation should be back in order for the first time all year if everything holds up.

See, the Jays are always willing to help allies in yank hate once off the pace. He's a much better hitter against lefties and isn't terrible at third. Yet I assume he's going to be a fixture in right for you now as he's played pretty well out there. He's real good tracking down balls to his right or coming in on short liners, but has decent trouble dropping back and playing the walls. Hope he wins a few vs. the spanks this week. I got to meet him down in Atlanta this year when I was on a business trip and he was a pretty level headed funny guy. He was just hoping for more playing time w/o being Hillenbrandish about it.
