Last October, VAN HALEN reps vehemently denied the band would use "Rock Star" in a talent search for a new lead singer. The reps are now singing a different tune. VAN HALEN publicist Larry Solters told TMZ.com: "I'm not denying it. I'm not going to answer any questions about it." Last year, the band INXS used "Rock Star" to find a new lead singer. J.D. Fortune won the competition, and the band is now making a comeback with a hit new album and a sold-out tour. As for VAN HALEN, the group has had three lead singers since it hit the scene back in 1978: David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985, Sammy Hagar, who split in 1995, and Gary Cherone, who did just one album and tour with the band in 1998. The next season of "Rock Star", produced by Mark Burnett for CBS, is scheduled to air during the summer. not related, just a small VH storyone of our Supervisors(Brian) performed in a martial arts competition at MSG years back. when he was outside the Garden a guy approached him and and congratulated him on his performance and he also had a case with some martial arts equip in it and showed it to Brian. This guy had three friends waiting on him as he invited Brian to a party, he said his band had just got done shooting a video and were gonna be celebrating.Brian said something to the effect 'in a nice way' "no that's okay, i know how you guys party"  They wished each other well and parted ways. The friend Brian was with asked Brian if he knew who that was and Brian had no idea, turns out it was David Lee and the band...pretty cooli believe the video was jump and you can see DLR using some martial art weapons/equip...

I can't help but think that doing this season of ROCKSTAR is their (or their managers) way of rehabilitating the bands image. (assuming that the whole VH thing is not a rumour)Eddie and Alex will get a ton of camera time on this show.  Lots of opportunities to present themselves as normal people with good senses of humor.  In my opinion, this whole thing is an excuse to pitch THEMSELVES to their old fans and THEIR MUSIC to the young'ns.  (see also: INXS)

Thanks!Yes, I am totally serious aboot doing it.  I tried out last year (for INXS) and was called back twice.  Didn't make the final cut but, I was able to audition in front of Gary Beers from INXSand the producers of the show.JD Fortune and Suzi McNeil were both at that same callback session so, I don't feel TOO bad.  This year, I will be totally fucking going for it.  In a sense, I will be playing a character.  I've decided to do "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet.  Why that song??  Because it's a new song but, it SOUNDS like an old song.  Kinda kills two birds with one stone.My second song, (if they ask me to proceed) will be "Drops Of Jupiter" by Train.  The vox are high & clean AND the complete and total opposite of the Jet song, which is quite raspy.  Also, I can play it on guitar and/or piano, both of which will be available to me at the audition.If this season actually IS for the VH gig remains to be seen so, I don't wanna go in there singing VH or DLR stuff.  It's a bit too on-the-nose for me.  If they ASK me to sing some VH, I am ready with just about anything.  No probs there.My professional resume is a bassist and backing vocalist. EXTREMELY pop oriented (Mandy Moore/ Hall & Oates/ LFO/ Coward/ etc etc) so, I don't think I'll be sharing that with them.  We'll see what happens......

Eddie VH has always looked for vocalists who he can reinvent the band with, he even tried to hire Scandal singer Patty Smyth at one time. I'd definitely play the piano as well if possible. Dont be afraid to be who exactly you are, thats what you'll do best. If its "pop" that may well be just what he's after. Good luck! <blockquote />

I have a serious question Fezident.With the past history, violent break ups and ego trips we've seen this band go through over the years what makes you want to walk into that?  I KNOW it would be the chance of a lifetime.  The exposure would be unparalelled.  But it will implode again, you know that.  Even worse, your name could be connected to a less than lack luster comeback album.I mean you're still going to do it, but these problems have to be in the back of your mind.

I wonder if David Lee Roth will show up to try out for the gig. How fucked up would that be? He can still sing. If you've heard his radio show, he'd love to get back with them for a tour and album. Says they even have about an album's worth of new material done already from the last failed reunion.  CBS would love it, ratings would be huge. The audience votes, so DLR would be almost guarenteed the spot just from all the old VH fans.  Never happen. Too many big egos involved.

I think that it would take a huge event for DLR and Eddie to reunite.  A tour....probably ain't gonna happen but.... a Rock-n-Roll-Hall-Of-Fame-induction-ceremony one-time-only concert?  Sure.  Live 8 part II?  Sure.At this point, Eddie would need something to "blame" the reunion on.  It coudn't just be for the bucks or some fans would resent him. If all goes well, great.  If the wheels start coming off the wagon after 5 minutes...hey, it was only for this one-night charity gig (or whatever).

According to the producers of the show....Van Halen is not the focus of the new series.  They are forming, and I quote:"a 'super group' of bad ass very famous musicians but, the main focus is finding that undiscovered singer who's a ROCK STAR'" EDIT:  I heard that DLR was saying on his morning show that it WAS in fact going to be a VH search..can anyone confirm that?  Was he stating it as fact...or opinion?

Going to the show ROCKSTAR to find a new lead singer couldn't hurt and since their last choice sucked. I think it might be the way to go. J.D. fortune seems to fit INXS. I never thought michael hutchence could be replaced but he looks and sounds pretty good. So, If it worked for INXS it might work for VAN HALEN. anything is better than Gary Cherone was. I would tell them to go for it.

The auditions are to be DAVE NAVARRO'S front man.  I think the band is called CAMP FREDDY.  They play covers at various clubs out there on the left coast.Other members of the band are MATT SORUM from THE CULT and GnR.  CHRIS CHANEY bassist for ALANIS and JANES ADDICTION.  I'm excited aboot it.  It would be a lot of fun to hang out with, and just JAM with those dudes.   <a href="http://www.campfreddy.net/">www.campfreddy.net</a>The list of guests that have joined CAMP FREDDY onstage grows longer and more outrageous with each concert. I went in there....sang one song ("Are You Gonna Be My Girl" acapella) and they immediately booked me for a callback.  I was psyched.  Did a quick interview for one of their casting directors and came back for my 2nd shot.Did Jet again, and "Hello There" by Cheap Trick.  The "judges" were split.  They told me to wait.After 2 hours, they came in said, basically, "they don't need another 'character/personality' like mine for the show".  I guess they already have a few quasi-attractive 30+ white guys with spikey hair.  Oh well.  I was happy to get asked back.  It's one of those things where I asked myself..."if I had this to do all over again, would I have done anything differently?" and my answer is NO. They are still being very tight lipped about WHO is actually involved with the show.  Right now, all signs point to a "supergroup" featuring Dave Navarro, Tommy Lee, and a few other tattoo warriors.  They expect to make an official announcement in a few days.  <a href="http://www.rockstar.msn.com/">www.rockstar.msn.com</a>

Yeah, that was a gamble that didn't really pay off. If she "sang" it...they would've condemned her for removing the Courtney Love-ness.  That song is MEANT to be screamed.  But...if you DO scream it, you run the risk of them THINKING you can't sing.They made it very clear that they hated everything about her performance.  I hope she can dodge the bullet for another week.

The singers don't pick the songs.At the beginning of the week, there is ONE song per singer posted on a board.  They fight over who gets to sing what but.... they can't just pick ANY song on earth.  Only one of the 12 on the list.

Jill was in the top 3 last night- but from what I've heard she stole the show  and was super hot.they booted off the brunette chick who said she was "in diapers " when the bands music was relevant.

Jill was in the bottom three but, redeemed herself with a slammin' rendition of "Bring Me To Life".  Zahara or Zathura or whatever her name is was also in the bottom three but she did NOT get the boot.  She's quirky and confident and, at the very least, interesting to watch.  I like her. I don't think she should WIN but I also don't think she should get booted now.  Too soon. Chris got kicked last night.  He did an acoustic version of that song by Tonic.  He was good but, when all is said and done...he's boring.  And he's ugly.  He looks like James Van Der Beek in drag. Dilana is magnetic.  I loved every second of her performance.  I auditioned for this show.  During the callback phase, a field producer told me that I am a great singer but, I "just don't have it".  At the time....his comment upset me.Dilana has it.I can't bring what she brings.  .

I don't think this band needs the sex-appeal.  I think it needs attitude.People like Storm or Jill or even that Australian guy whose name I can't remember....they just aren't right for THIS band.  They'd be better on their own and hopefully this show will help their solo careers in some small way.Dilana and/or Lucas are the only natural fit.  Not just because they have tats and stuff.  It's the overall ATTITUDE they transmit.  I honestly don't know why the producers of the show even BOTHER putting these wholesome contestants on the show.  I don't think it adds anything of value.

It will be a chick who fronts this band. Supernova wont be around long. An album, small tour, maybe a video and AIRPLAY on radio and MTV. The last thing this bands needs is another "tuff guy/bad boy" - he will will be over shadowed by the other members of the band. Frankly, the greenday/good charolete thing is so fucking played now. Mainstream music is getting away from that.  To have a female like Dilana fronting these bad boys would really be media gold and be a prefect launching pad for her AFTER the band.I cannot recall a chick leading a "supergroup" - so it would kinda be a first.  She is a perfect fit for this project.  I dont think ANY of the guys have anything that stand out for this band. Everyone involved with this from the producers, to the band watns to cash in at the end of this. Right now music doesnt have a hard chick that can rock the house.  Not only do I think Dilana will win  - I think she will be the first person in these talent type shows to make a lasting impression on modern music.  She's the read deal folks.  Everyone else looks silly. yes - her weird dancing is odd - but its also crazy and insane. - she will own this band

I agree!Dilana is MY choice and is exactly what this band needs.  Having said that, I wouldn't completely remove Lucas from the equation.  He is also a good fit and the members of Supernova definitely DO seem to like him.  He is a safe choice and, at the end of the day, it's possible that Supernova might just "go with what they know".I hope the show comes back next year in a different format.  I want them to remove the "has been" factor. It would be cool if they put together a new "supergroup" of comprised of people that are actually RELEVANT.Something like:  The drummer from No Doubt.The bass player from Green Day.Throw Linda Perry into the mix.and maybe even someone like John Mayer on Guitar.  Something that is, at the very least, VALID.  Not a joke.  Give it a fighting chance on commercial radio.  This show, in it's current form, is dangerously close to "The Surreal Life". Let's put it this way, that house band is fuckin' ssssmokin'.  Any singer would be lucky to front that band. Who are they?  They're session dudes who backed up Vanessa Carlton, Mandy Moore, Michelle Branch, Ricky Martin, and many others.  I think THEY are more valid than "the guy who replaced Izzy Stradlin in GNR in the middle of one tour back in 1996" Does any CARE about the members of Supernova?  I just don't think so.  If anything, they actively DON'T care.  How say you?    .

God damn I love Dilana.  She simply HAS to win this thing. Here's something interesting:During week one, Supernova booted that dude (Marc?) because he selected a Duran Duran song.  They immediately kicked his ass to the curb because of that song choice.Three weeks later, Dilana does a song by Cyndi Lauper and the band gets chills, showers her with praise, and gives her a standing-O.  WHY?  Because she is just so amazing at what she does. that it doesn't matter what she sings.  The selection is unimportant.  She takes ownership of every song.   As usual, I hated a lot of the others.  Dana and one of the other girls are just too damn boring for this contest.  Zzzzz.Zathura is a keeper.  I like her attitude and, ya gotta admit, she ain't boring! Jill LOOKED a little too clean cut tonight but, she's trying to rock it up.  Good for her. RADIO PSYCHIC: Lucas will whine and pout because of Jasons criticism.

To me, this is clearly Lukas' gig to lose now. Magni just showed he isn't a great fit. As for Dilana, I do like her a lot, but it annoys me, and it should annoy the other contestants as well, how the judges all bash people for "not getting it" and not knowing what they are looking for music-wise, but they'll come out and rock their ass off, while Dilana sings these slow non-rock songs and she winds up getting the praise while the others get criticism. She's good, I give her that, but how does singing "Time After Time" translate into what fomer members of Guns N Roses, Metallica, and Motley Crue plan on performing? As for that freaky Zayra, she needs to go. She is one that clearly doesn't "get it" and on top of that her singing sucks. Fuck the whole "she brings drama". This isn't Big Brother. I think the appeal of Dilana, other than the intensity and the image, is the diversity.  We've seen her rock. We've seen her tone it down.   Some of these other singers really are doing the same thing over and over.  The chick who did "Remedy" is just so damn boring.  Same thing applies to Dana.  Every coverband on Long Island has a girl who's at least THAT good. (and believe me, I would know)Storm Large does nothing but howl through every song.  She grunted her way through "Surrender" (which SHOULD'VE had a clean vocal with a snotty attitude) and she growled her way through that Dramarama song.  It's predictable.  I dig Lucas' stage presence. He's got that down.  His vocals are waaay to constricted for my taste.  I agree with Jason on that one.  Lucas' vox have a "choking" quality.  Me no likey.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. I'm starting to think the guys want her to do slower songs that she puts her own twist on. Otherwise, she just blends in with the rest.

I'm so glad that Dana got the boot.She was actually my very LEAST favorite contestant.  She just didn't have anything to offer.  She was a typical run-of-the-mill singer (read: boring), she didn't have a good/interesting look, her stage presence was painfully average, she didn't have a cool vibe.....just NOTHING. Everyone on that show is a "character".  The good looking guy, the loner, the cute one, the intense one, the freaky looking one, the soulful guy, etc etc.  Dana was "the nobody".  Buh bye. Next week, it's Josh or Patrice.  Their time is up.

Okay, what the hell was that? Why did they feel the need to get rid of two people? I admit that Jill is hit or miss most of the time, but she had potential, unlike Josh. Now, don't get me wrong, Josh is good at his type of music, but not for a rock band. He had a chance to knock Interstate Love Song out of the park, but he lacked the energy to do so especially with Tommy on drums. As for Zayra, what the fuck is America thinking? She is downright awful! How has she escaped the bottom 3 the past couple of weeks? Kicking off two people in one night is part of the show.  INXS did it at this point last year.They act like it's spontaneous but...it's part of the scheduling.  Zayra is the skinny chick with the dark hair.  She sings with an accent.  The one with the piercings in her chin is Dilana. It's kind of impossible that anyone but Lucas (the glammed out Clint Howard) or Dilana will win.  Those two are the only two that Supernova has said "I could see you in our band" and "you're exactly what our band needs". etc etc.Sure...a few others have received their share of compliments but, not on the same level.  "Hey...you sang that really well...the crowd really liked it" isn't that same as league as "Lucas, you're a true Rockstar, GET ON THE BUS!"

Finally, that awful Zayra is gone! Granted, it was really a toss up between her and Patrice tonight (she's definitely gone next week) but at least we don't have to suffer through the songs of someone who sounds tone deaf anymore. Now, I was one who in the beginning said a woman didn't stand a chance of winning this thing. I honestly have to take that back now. As far as I'm concerned it's still just a two person race between Dilana and Lukas, but after seeing her perform with the whole band, I could easily see her being the lead singer of these guys. She was great with them. Oh yeah, and I can't leave without once again saying God, Storm is so friggin' HOT!

Dilana is my choice.  And after seeing her with the full band last night, I really do think she SHOULD win.But, at the end of the day, I think that Supernova will not choose a female.  MC, Metallica, and GnR have a huge strip joint lovin' - black denim jeans wearin' - fan base that WON'T want to see a chick drivin' the bus.  Personally, I would love to see Lucas/Magni get the gig with Supernova and for Dilana to get a record deal with the House Band.

Mark my words:Dilanas new blowhard attitude is her strategy.  Plain and simple.  It worked for JD last year and she's following that template.  Last season, JD was a dick, he started a lot of shit in the house, he was arrogant, he didn't even do some of the assignments & clinics and...lo and behold "he was right for the band".Dilana sees herself as the "Mig Ayesa" of THIS season. Great performances....encores...screaming fans...never in the bottom three....moving the judges to tears....most downloaded performances on the official site....etc etc etc.  INXS didn't want him.  They went with the guy who wasn't nearly as talented but, had the biggest "rockstar" personality.The only way Supernova isn't gonna view her as a "girl" is if she toughens up a bit.  They don't want her Stevie Nicks "good energy & vibes" and all that nonsense. They have to believe that she can hang with the fellas.Better to be the victimizer than be victimized.  If Lucas was bashing HER and she was acting all defeated "you know what...that really hurt my feelings"....it would make her seem weak. Tommy Lee wrote two books (and soon...a movie) all about dishing the dirt and badmouthing others. Trust me...he ain't offended or shocked by anything Dilana says in a MOCK interview. It's strategy. They WILL praise her for "keepin' it real" and be a "real rockstar".

Seems like the guy who gets yanked out of the audience by the band and to everyones surprise can actually sing.Ryan - Talented, getting better each week. Liked the original. Not sure about how he will mesh with the guys.Storm - I think she's coming across better on TV than live. Huge personality, voice and comfort level on stage (good) and seems like she can more than hang with the guys. Definitely looks and personality that will serve well publicity wise, but maybe too much?Dilana - Coming across better live than on TV, but identifiable voice. Doesn't really know how to move on stage as well as the others. Seems like the competition is causing her to become too self-conscious on stage. Also somewhat severe looking.

This is the only reality show I watch.  (except for The Contender and the 1st season of Idol) I think my favorite part about THIS show in particular is that there is PROGRESS. You can literally see the contestants improve each week.  If you watched a tape of last nights performances and then watched a tape of the first episode....you would be amazed.  Their stage presence, energy, and overall attitudes have transformed.  THIS is when things get interesting. THIS is when you can really start to envision one of these people fronting the Supernova band.Dilana used to be all creepy and "scary". Now she's interactive and energetic.Ryan used to be aloof and brooding. Now he's enjoying himself.Magni??  Remember his first performance??!  "PUTTIN' ON THE RIIITZZ!". Now, he's a natural.  For anyone who hasn't been watching up to this point, I suggest that you tune in next week.  It's gettin' good. (of course...you're probably not reading this thread but....whatev)

Adding a female vox to this band would def be something new for these businessmen/musicians. Are they really going to try and make an artistic statement with this band? Or CA$H in?  Like it or not - chicks own the music biz now. They move cds and the rock world is lacking in a balls out female with real rock & roll cred. What a better way to introduce Dilana ( who I think will someday be a popular solo artist) than to build her cred up by singing with authentic " rock & roll bad boys" - She is seasoned. Right on man. She made me look away... she WAS obviously lost in the middle and kept looking to the band for some direction. She was chugging Ryan's champagne maybe it started to hit her or something but OUCH did she have a bad night... piss poor song selection as far as Im concerned as well. I can't help but think of Linda Perry when she performs. She has that 4non blondes voice. I wouldnt be surprised if there is some kind of linda perry connection to her or the show.

All three of them (Dilana, Ryan, and Storm) were downright awful last night. You could even see on the Supernova guy's and Navarro's faces that they were totally disgusted by the performances. I really thought this was Lukas' gig to lose, but he is very inconsistant and performing with the guys last night showed he just didn't look or sound right. This is definitely Dilana's to lose now.

I think they all blew their load the night before.Performance night was AMAZING.  Every one of them was on-point. Then, the very next night...they all ssssucked.  Storms voice was stripped. Ryan whole performance was a wrong number. And Dilana?  That was unacceptable. AMATURE. They all better come out swingin' next week. It's crunch time.

Man, Dilana is having a tough time!The media clinic debacle...the meltdown...then that Talking Heads fiasco....then Gilby didn't dig her songwriting....now, the injury. I'll still vote for her because she was so captivating during the first couple of months but, it's really starting to look like she won't win.What a shame.
