View Full Version : The (supposed) NEW Video iPod

So, my ipod broke AGAIN. This is the second time it has happened in just over a year. I was pissed at Apple beyond belief. I felt like ditching the thing and buying a new one from another company. I really think it's inexcusable. I've never owned electronics that have died like these iPods. My first on died after 5 months. I had a replacement plan on it, so I had it replaced with a BRAND NEW one. This died after 10 months. On this one I have an AppleCare plan, so I decided to bite the bullet and have it fized since it will be for free. But I said as soon as that plan expired I was going to buy a new MP3 player from a different company. I said I was done with Apple and their crap products. I wasn't going to support Apple as long as they put out unreliable hardware. Then I saw this.

Damn it.

More about it here.

That thing looks sweet.

Here's what they need to address:

A) The crappy battery. I have the current video iPod and the batts need to be charged DAILY.

B) Some type of screen protection.

C) an EASY way to drag video content to the iPod.

and while they're at it....I wish iTunes sold AAC's at a higher rate than 128kbps. They SHOULD sell them at 320kbps. I mean..you can always make it smaller once you own it. Why not give the listener the OPTION to listen to the songs they paid for at the best possible fidelity?!

My only concern with this new iPod, if it is indeed the new iPod, is that having the wheel on the screen will mean fingerprints all over the creeen all the time.

GOOD POINT!

I didn't even think of that.

Is it possible that the screen will -somehow- be smudgeproof??

Looks awesome but it's going to be out of my league financially I'm sure. I'm very satisfied with my iPod I have with the old black LCD display. I mean I'm sure I'd find ways to use the Video iPod but I don't really need it. I don't even watch TV, why do I need a Video iPod? Is it easy to convert files to iPod's format? If so, I'd get shitloads of Simpsons, Aqua Teen and other similar episodes off the net and watch them on the go.

It's easy, but time-consuming. And I don't mean you will spend a long time doing things. You basically just use any one of a number of easy to use programs to convert the files. You'll spend maybe 2 minutes of time starting the conversion. Problem is, depending on how fast of a computer you have, it could take a really long time for the computer to process the file. For example, when I convert Simpsons episodes for use on my PSP (the PSP and Video iPod read almost exactly the same types of files) a typical episode will take anywhere from 10-15 minutes to convert on my Pentium 4 3.2Ghz, just to give a frame of reference.

As for the price of this new iPod, I wouldn't expect anything under $500.

Yea, you're running a nice computer with over a gig or 2 of RAM I'm guessing too. That is a long time for a conversion to run on a comp like that. It would probably take over a half hour to an hour on my old comp with a 1.3 Ghz processr and 256MB RAM.

Everything takes time these days. A fucking DVD burn of a half hour set Unhallowed just played takes over an hour. Love the new technology but Jesus, cut the time down my niggas.

My Ipod has a Tough Skin on it from Speck. It's AWESOME. Plus, it has screen protection.

...and reading how your IPod broke again HBox and how I have heard
from so many others how their IPod's keep shitting on them makes me
think what is the real point of having one. It's like I want one but I
don't. I have all the music I could ever want at the tip of my fingers
with my CD's and I just don't see the point of watching TV or any
Video's on the go. Call me old school but something about watching
video's and TV on a TV (PERHAPS) just makes sense to me.

I am just not seeing what the big deal is with the whole IPod craze. If
it is really that good of a product, sell me on it and convince me. I
saw the Video IPod Mikeyboy had and thought it was pretty neat how you
could just watch a cartoon on there on demand pretty much. Even one of
my cartoons would be cooler!

Now I have considered an MP3 player. Even the new XM MP3 Unit
coming out sounds quite enticing becuase something like that I think
would be handy. I waqnt to convert all of my 7 inches onto a Digital
Platform. Is there any good MP3's Players out there besides the IPod
that have a user friendly interface (maybe I am just stupid but
the circle thing on the IPod just drives me crazy) and are a good
quality product that won't break down on me in a couple months?
I got the 4 year protection plan so I'm hoping it fails soon so I can get a new video iPod. I still have 2 and a half years!! The thing just keeps working...

The Video on the doesn't make sense to me as a major selling point, but it is a cool gagety type thing people seem to love.
The actual VIDEO function is little more than a novelty.

Yes, I have loaded videos onto mine and yes, I have purchased some videos from iTunes (just to check it out) but...really...how many times can you watch the same damn music video?

As for watching movies on the thing...ain't happenin'. Not until the invent a battery that lasts long enough to actually watch an entire movie. I've watched one or two episodes of Futurama when I'm on the train. It's great. Then the battery gives me the finger.

And the IDEA of watching an entire movie -of my choice- on a plane or something like that IS attractive but, the battery just doesn't support it.

Those bastards.

My daughter was able to watch 2 hours + of video last time we took the train.

You don't have to worry about forgetting CD's, don't have to find room for a big CD player and CD cases. As long as you remember your iPod you have everything you'd have an urge to listen to. It has an incredible design. It looks great and searching through it is effortless. iTunes is a good way to organize your music, updating your iPod is easy. It's all effortless. The only negative I've ever heard about the iPod is the battery (not much life, they die often).

I have a PSP for video, so i'm not much interested in the iPod's video capabilities. The PSP has much better battery life (6+ hours for videos off the memory stick, 2+ hours for video off UMD discs). It's screen also blows any screen on any portable device I've ever seen away. It doesn't have as much space as a Video iPod (2GB max, and you have to buy the memory stick separately). But I can live with that, there isn't going to be a protable player any time soon capable of holding my whole video collection.

If I hadn't had 2 different, brand new iPods die on me in just over a year it would be one of my favorite devices I'd ever purchased. I hpe they don't just replace the battery and just send me a newer model. Hopefully it will be more reliable. As well as the device works, I personally can't reccomend it.
