What is your favorite rock band from the decade most of us know the most?

Whether you choose by favorite, most influential, or some other reason, post it up...

And if you pick other, say why, and don't bitch too much- I only had 10 slots. And no, picking 'other' does not make you cool.

Oh, and I picked Pearl Jam- there longevity and how awesome they are/were, especially live, seals it.

I picked Nirvana. I would have said "other", as I'm sure there is something I like more. I'm just lazy too use my memory right now. I did a lot of coke in the 90's.

meh.

10 years ago when some schmuck post this question about this decade, i'll have the same excuse. Of course, my choices will be Linkin Park, and Something Even Crappier, so who gives a shit...

Voted Alice in Chains because I prefer their whole body of work and it transcended grunge. Death of Layne Staley aside, personalities didn't overshadow music.

Radiohead was a close second, especially for OK Computer

With a lot of the other bands, personalities overshadowed the music. If Nirvana gets a much-deserved nod for their influence, then so should Soundgarden.

I voted Alice In Chains although I also love both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

I think Nirvana gets too much credit for that grunge era because they had the first catchy song that attratced attention.

That didnt make them the best.

With that said it did allow the other groups to get more airtime.

I think Soundgarden was the first of the " Grunge " bands to have a major record label and AIC was the first to have a video on MTV.

Alice In Chains was the best musically and kinda like somebody said previoulsy they didnt bring their politics/nonsense ( other than Staley's drug use ) into their medai image.

Soundgarden was awesome and was more like AIC in the media atmosphere whereas PJ ( with their Ticketmaster nonsense ) and Nirvana ( with Cobain's suicide ) got a lot of ink.

I actually started liking Nirvana more after Cobain died. That MTV Unplugged album was awesome.

All of that " Grunge " music rocked.

STP had some hits and misses by Weiland was a great singer I think.

STP - felt they had the best frontman vocal wise and not as many hits as the others but several of the songs are my favorites

I think Chris Cornell might have been the best singer of any of them but the AIC mix between Staley and Cantrell was a good one.

Another grunge guy who had a good voice, although his band wasnt nearly as popular as these others, was Mark Arm of Screaming Trees

Id rather listen to Smashing Pumpkins then any of those bands on the vote. Best rock band of the 90's I'd say based on what "rock" stations played, its Eminem for that too

This is a pretty subjective thread...I mean, yeah, it's obviously "rock only," so that cuts a ton of stuff that made the music in the early and mid 90's so damn good...plus, what's the criteria for a band "in the 90's?" Are we talking bands that formed or became big in the 90's specifically? Otherwise you could technically pick ANY band as long they just "existed" in the 90's. So would U2 even count in the first place? Granted, I pretty much hate that band with a beautiful, sexy passion, but I'll admit Achtung Baby is a monster of an album...though that was, what, '91? Within a couple years people were VERY fed up with them, and even the most diehard of U2 fans have to admit that any other music they put out the rest of the decade was medicore at best (and the new stuff is even worse, but apparently tons of people aren't listening to me. Weird). But, long way around to my actual point...U2 were at their height in the 80's I think U2, I think 80's band. So, in my opinion, they shouldn't even be on this list. I've called the Music Gestapo, and those Irish bastards will be sent to the camps.

And this'll probably brand me as a "music snob" yet again (you should care about what you put into your body, right? Why should music be any different? Aerosmith sucks massive amounts of diseased dick and are only out-dicked by people that actually like them. So there.), but I never really "got" grunge. Being overseas at the time, I got much more exposure (didn't really have a choice, actually. Outside of Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, grunge didn't really carry over the oceans) to the Britpop/Madchester/shoegazer/power pop/dance/hip-hop (the one form of American music that really exploded around the world) of the 90's. Some of the co-called "grunge" acts were awesome, but I never understood why they were all lumped together. Alice in Chains sounded almost metal. Soundgarden sounded like classic Sabbath or even a little Motorhead-y. Nirvana seemed punk. STP and Screaming Trees and Mudhoney owed far more to classic garage rock and early metal than any kind of "new" sound. Smashing Pumpkins were a shoegazer/psychedalia rock band more than anything else on their first two albums (the good ones, yeah?). Pearl Jam is the only band that scream "grunge" to me, and that's mostly because they're so fucking boring.

On a whole, music between 1989 and 1997 really seemed more about variety than anything else, and it frustrates the fuck out of me when so much of it just gets boiled into broad, meaningless labels like "grunge" or "electronica" or "Britpop." All in all, it was a kickass time to grow up and be exposed to music for the first time...for a few years it seemed like anything goes, and damn, I miss it.

So, yeah, that was musically snobbish out the ying-yang, but whatever. I love talking about music. Sorry.

I pretty much hate that band with a beautiful, sexy passion

you hate U2 so much you jack it to them? thats hot i mean um gross yeah

isn't
this really based on what 90s band with 90s albums has enough songs on
that album that in 40 yeas some kid will buy a copy of it and rock out
to it

a best band should have a full solid album front to back

so
now i think i want to know the best (rock or alt whatever) Album period
of the 90s and would that equal to the best band?

what does music even matter anymore it's all personal no matter what

you
know what be a good thread 5 albums to give your Child when they turn
14 would that be the same list of 5 that you would give on a desert
island

Pearl Jam is the only band that scream "grunge" to me, and that's mostly because they're so fucking boring

Each his own, but I got to defend the boys here... Ten through Vitalogy while amazing albums (imho), were aimed to be commercially successful, and could be classified as 'boring' by the time Vitalogy rolled around... The albums after, tanked commercially but explored a HUGE variety of sounds (including eastern influences) and were anything but boring especially No Code and Binaural. In addition to the studio albums, they have dozens upon dozens of material which also incredibly varied, hidden on b-sides and soundtracks..

Also, their live act is amazing- very little boring about a wine fueled Eddie Vedder rambling and improvising through everything from straight up rock, acoustic to strangely inspired covers...

Angrymissy,

It'll sound even gayer when I admit that I dig Toa The Wet Sprockett and Tonic.

Oh the early 90's were great.

On a side note VH1 Classiscs always shows these " reunion " kinda concerts like recently they did one with Cyndi Lauper ( joined by Shaggy and Train ) and they are doing one with Heart coming up in the future. The cool part is that the remaining people from Alice In Chains will be playing some songs.

Unfortunately that pig Gretchen Wilso got herself in there somehow too.
