Is anyone here watching SMALLVILLE?

This show is kicking all kinds of ass lately. If you're not watching...now is the time to start.

It's NOTHING like it was during the first two seasons. Back then, every episode was self contained. Introduce wacky villain + silly high school drama + resolve problem = typical episode.

NOW....the writers are really starting to address and explore Clarks "Super-ness". The pieces are in place for Clark to become the Superman we all know. His powers are evolving. His identity is conflicted. Lex is growing more and more deceptive. Pa Kent has taught him all he needs to know. Etc etc.

It's also interesting to see how they are, in subtle ways, incorporating thematic elements from the Christopher Reeve franchise. Sometimes it's a music cue, other times...it's a line of dialog. All good.

Also. Lois is complete hotness. Lana looks like a Gelfling but, she's kinda hot in her own way.

I'm a fan, and it has gotten a lot better from the first season, but I think that it's still a little too formulaic, and strains the bounds of credibility. For instance, the 100th episode was great, up until Clark went back in time and refused to tell Lana about his secret. I would have been pysched if she found out, and they dealt with it.

What's happening on Smallville won't formally affect (effect?) what happens in the new Superman movie but, they will probably make subtle references and inside jokes. Real fanboy stuff.

EXAMPLE:

In the 100th episode of Smallville, Lana dies in a car accident. Clark is able to ressurect her by using the crystal from Krypton to go back in time. When he tells his friend Chloe that he went back in time to save Lana, she jokingly says "how'd you do that? Did you, like, use your super speed to fly around the earth and make it reverse on it's axis?!"

Smallville is always doing stuff like that. So, it wouldn't suprise me if the new movie references Smallville is some ways. Maybe Tom Welling (Clark) will have a cameo or somethin'. They're both WB properties.

EDIT: I just re-read my enire post. CALLING ALL NERDS.

"Shut up Paul-O. Just go with the bit."

i dunno, i tried watching it but its so fucking gay...I have a couple of artistic disagreements with the show. Like, why is everyone in Smallville clean and good looking? Has anybody actually been to Kansas. Reality quite to the contrary. And why, oh why, must I endure WB soundtrack awfulness. They did this to fucking Buffy too and I hated it...take a popular pop artist and make them play the school dance or whatever so they can say "soundtrack available at your local stores". It ALWAYS seems forced and never really adds to the story. I also really hate the villains. It's kind of an issue I had with the Joss Whedon universe. Sunnydale was a fucked up place to be, demons...vamps...they ran rampant, but the show was set in reality so people's natural reaction didn't make sense. Obviously if the student body sees a giant snake everyone's moving out...yet the town's full of people, nobody seems to do or say anything about all the weirdness. Same with Smallville. It's the pratfall of translating a comic world to reality, I guess.

But really the most obnoxious part of the show was pacing....enough with the romance...give me the powers...the first couple of seasons were so boring...i remember saying "fucking finally" when they finally addressed Clark's heat vision. Enough. Let him fly. Let him fight crime. Let him kick ass. I've had enough of his time in small ville. Give me metropolis, man in cape and lots of awesomeness.

I like Smallville being a Superman fan and all, but the only thing I don't get is how they're going to explain the glasses after nearly EVERYONE who is essential to the secret identity plot has seen him without glasses.

First off, let me just announce my geekitude by posting comments here and not in the "Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johannson Nude" topic.

I blew off Smallville in large part because of the sheer number of super-powered freaks popping up every episode in the first couple of seasons. I'd watch but only on occasions. I rather like the recent episodes because they are dealing with him becoming both Superman and Clark Kent. It has made for interesting shows. Lex is a well done character, and tipping him back and forth between light and dark (or at least justified in his own mind) really makes the show. That's an actor I'd hope to see in other roles.

The time warp thing was disappointing, but well done. I thought Lana does become aware of his powers but that they remain as close friends. Also, while I love the Superman movie (still in most ways my favorite of all superhero movies), I didn't think his father died in the comic mythos and figured they were sticking with that. I expected that Chloe would die (or Lionel), since I don't recall either being part of the ongoing story. And Chloe's death would be a good reason for Clark's relationships with Lana, Lex and Lois.

I love all the little throwout references they make. That "spinning around the world" was great.

Spicy, dead on with the glasses. You have to wonder how Lex is really going to miss out on this.

Agreed.

The whole "how is Lex NOT going to know Superman/Clarks identity later in life" thing is going to be tough to explain.

Since the very first season, he's suspected that Clark is more than human. In fact, the whole reason for Lexs' investigations of Clark is because he drove his car off a bridge and he SAW Clark save his life and not get injured. Since then, Clark has done some inexplicable things and Lex has witnessed more then a few of them.

It will be interesting to see how they untangle that plotline.

Having said that: I don't think the show will EVER evolve into a true show about "Superman". In many interviews and documentaries, the creators, writers, and cast of the show has said there is a strict NO FLIGHTS- NO TIGHTS policy. It's their mantra.

It means, on Smallville, we will never see him fly around and we will never see him suit up. The show will never get that far along in Supermans career.

Although, that was a few years ago. I wonder if they're going to change that directive now that show is so successful.

I am a major Superman fan, but Smallville never did it for me. I understand having to keep the mythos fresh and and all that. and I dont hold the comic book as a bible that they can't deviate from. Superman has changed over the years and will always continue to change. I probaly would have watched Smallville if I was'nt so big into the comics

Smallville will just end up being its own little self contained universe using the Superman characters.

we will never see him fly

We've seen him fly

the Secret identy thing is easy because it's new context

Lex never actully see superman at first thats how it will be

there is so many super people poping up it just seams like another noob

he will grow a hatred for this one that wears red and blue tights

he
will focus on nothign but hate eatting him up inside not looking at the
face and supermans staure and greatness will make him seam like a whole
other person not the unsure farm boy that is Clark Kent

in re crisis storyline

when Luthor was a teenager, his family moved to Smallville, with Lex becoming a large fan of Superboy.
In gratitude and to encourage Lex's scientific pursuits, Superboy built
for Lex a fully stocked laboratory. There, Lex began an experiment in
creating an artificial new form of life, along with a cure for
kryptonite poisoning. However, when a fire caught in his lab, Superboy
mistakenly used his super-breath to extinguish the flames. This rescue
attempt spilled chemicals that caused Luthor to go prematurely bald and
destroyed both his kryptonite cure and his artificial life form. Luthor
attributed Superboy's actions to jealousy and vowed revenge-from wiki

so
like it's just diffrnt times diffrnt tellings useing the old story a
really good telling is Superman Birthright written by Mark Waid it made
sense of a lex clark Relationship wich kinda makes more sense in a way
like watching smallville is hard to do because you can't seam to just
watch it for entertainment you have to make up your own things and hope
they go there then get mad when they screw up

really it comes down to it it's not a good show but it's good ol comfort watching It's nice to know superman is out there

now somebody attacking buffy

they brought up many times
in episodes laughing cause people who watched it relized people died
all the time and people jsut acted like its kinda normal but also its
the hellmouth so everyone in town is under infulence of powers if you
look at it that way

the biggest problem with Smallville is they
turned Metopolis into a nothing city like some how they can drive to
metopolis in a half hour away from smallville thats just crazy how the
hell would metopolis be some mid west city in kansas it has to be a
Coasty Giant wich i always wonder where on a map it would be yeah it's
suposed to be NYC but so is Gotham but then they screw up and have NYC
in Dc world so untill someone makes a map i will still be confused

and would you watch a show full of Uglie teens swooning over
eatch other while solving minor monster of the week mysteres i think not

I like the storyline I got used to the clark kid it's watchable

i forgot where i was going with this i spend way too much time on something nobody is going to read

The Smallville Superman has never flown as a mode of transportation. I think he had a "vision of the future" once and it showed a dreamlike vision of his legs and cape flying -for about two seconds.

In the last episode, he jumped to the top of Fortress (while holding Lana).

Was there another time when he flew?? I don't recall.

He still runs everywhere. Even when a loved one is in danger, they show him running at superspeed to get there in time.

And, like I said earlier, the whole NO FLIGHTS NO TIGHTS thing was the creators vision of the show. They might have to rethink that now that he's out of high school and his dad died. I mean, how long can he stay in Kansas??
