The new master of the Stratocaster!  He smoked when I saw him at the Meadowlands too.  On the second song he played a Hohner Telecaster.  I would love to get my hands on one.

Lord knows exactly how much material that little purple madman has stored away. Back in '88, when Prince abruptly halted releasing the Black album and instead released Lovesexy, either Rolling Stone or Spin magazine began their review by giving what they imagined was a typical morning for Prince - it was something like: "Wake up and looking longingly in the mirror - write 10 songs - have breakfast - look longingly in the mirror some more - write 10 more songs - have lunch."

When did Prince give up on The Funk? We always knew he could jam, but why turn into Eddie when you have such a rich and funky history! I saw him perform, and could not help but think back to "1999" That tune put the "King of Punk-Funk" to shame!

I'm just annoyed at how music is now. I remembered when thriller and purple rain came out, everyone I knew had those records. It didn't matter if you were a metalhead, a ghetto rat, puerto rican, whatever. everyone had those records and they were great. It was all about having a good time. I don't know if music is ever going to be like that again.Seeing prince though is glimpse of that time for me. I wish that he wasn't so elusive with his TV performances.

Thanks for the link, Sheepy!The Batman soundtrack, for me, is definitely where Prince began jumping the shark for pretty much the next 15 years.  Granted, there's 5 fantastic songs on the soundtrack (which only leaves 4 others), but the bad stuff is SO bad.  "Arms of Orion?"  Sweet jumping Jesus, that song is dire.  And "Batdance?"  Ouch.  From there on out, any album he put out until Musicology definitely had more bad songs than good, and the rift just got wider and wider as he seemingly ditched the sex and passion in his music and got all about God and hippie crap.  He seems to have finally found a middle ground with the newer stuff, but honestly, I miss the filth, dammit!

This message was edited by fezident on 2-5-06 @ 12:53 PM Very serious man.  I had the tape back when the movie came out and just recenly made a post about getting that CD off Amazon.  It slows down for Arms of Orion, Vicky Waiting and Scandalous but the other songs off that album are fucking awesome. I do understand how gay Batdance is and how it jumps around WAY too much musically, but I just like it.  It's probably more the memory of the time it came out than it being a good song.  With the exception of the 3 balads I listed above I think BATMAN is one of the ultimate party albums.

Mojo, are you forgetting about DIAMONDS AND PEARLS and THE GOLD EXPERIENCE??  Those are brilliant records that feel consistant throughout.  I also think "SYMBOL" is strong from start to finish but, I know I'm alone on that one.I agree that COME and VAULT: FRIENDS FOR SALE and RAVE 2000 and all that stuff sucks. EMANCIPATION and CRYSTAL BALL didn't really need to be 3 discs each.  He diluted it. Each one of those records should've been distilled down to one strong disc (each). But again, check out THE GOLD EXPERIENCE. It's all killer.

I don't know why I don't like that soundtrack so much.  I went and looked it up on CDNow after Moe brought it up and like I said, the majority of the 9 songs on that album kick ass.  "The Future," "Electric Chair," "Partyman," "Trust," "Lemon Crush"...I'd easily put all of those on a Prince best of.  Though the various samples and sound clips from the flick DO get tedious...and the ballads are unsalavagable.  And ending on "Batdance" is probably what forever tainted the album for me.  But shit, I gotta go get the good songs...And man, I need to chime in and agree with everyone else on how he ended that first song on SNL.  That's hardcore, man.  And if any of you can see him when he tours again, pay whatever it takes to get in.  I caught him during his last tour and it was easily one of the top 3 live shows I've ever been to see.  He busts out the solo acoustic versions of a bunch of classics midway through and it's fantastic!

Just go with the bit."  There's definitely great songs on all of the albums you listed, especially the first two, but I'm just saying that all those albums suffered from having more (sometimes WAY more) bad songs than good, and unfortunately, when Prince is bad, he's REALLY bad.  But yeah, I've sought out plenty of individual songs from his albums over the last 15 years, especially D&P and TGE.

I kept reading that this past SNL was Prince's 2nd appearance, his first being February 21st, 1981 were he did "Party Up" (He was the 2nd Musical Guest after Todd Rundgren)Is this hour of footage available anywhere?
