I always liked the winter olympics more than summer, and it's not just for the curling. If I put my mind to it, I bet I could be one of the broom sweeper guys.

She appeared to be unconscious and sliding underneath her sled through at least two curves of the track, and fans who were lined alongside the wall waved their arms to summon medical personnel to the scene. A large drape was pulled across the curve of the track where Retrosi stopped, shielding her from view. There was no immediate word on the severity of her injuries.
Watching on a large video screen while talking with reporters, Germany's Tatjana Huefner gasped and stared blankly at the image for several seconds.

"It's a very, hard and difficult track," said Germany's Silke Otto, who twice lowered the track record. "Crashes are always possible but it's not dangerous. But it is a track where you have to concentrate the whole time."

As Retrosi was being attended to, athletes, coaches and officials gathered around TV monitors near the finish area in silence. Test events were called off after a Brazilian sustained a serious head injury and a Romanian broke an arm during events in February 2005.

Some of those changes included raising the ice base between curves 16 and 17 - about the spot where Retrosi slammed into the wall.

Retrosi's was one of several crashes during the opening day of the women's event - including one that knocked out Italy's Anastasia Oberstolz-Antonova, who probably was more familiar with her home nation's venue than anyone else in the field.

Czech slider Marketa Jeriova also wiped out in the opening round. And medal hopeful Natalia Yakushenko of Ukraine didn't start her second run after banging the wall hard and sustaining an undisclosed injury in her opening heat, which she finished.

Several other racers had near-disasters as well after Retrosi's wreck, including Canada's Alex Gough and Slovakia's Jana Sisajova, who came off her sled in a turn. She lay on the ice for several seconds before climbing over the barriers apparently unharmed.

And Argentina's Michelle Despain bounced off the walls repeatedly in both of her runs, yet managed to finish both and somehow left smiling after her second - during which she struck concrete at least six times between the start and bottom and often sprayed ice chips about the track.

Ok, this seems like the "Death Track".
Haven't been able to find any video yet. Say m watchin snowboarding and i see the prelims and then all of a sudden i gotta watch Luge. I cant stand that, everything in luge looks the same. I cant tell they arent moving, its like watching 20 replays.

also number 2, it hurts ratings, especially of the more popular events. This message was edited by furie on 2-20-06 @ 8:31 PM
Not good, but unless they lose by like 20 they'll still go on to the next round so it doesn't really matter.

This game doesn't mean anything at all since Latvia lost, now the US could lose by 1 million and still advance. But it's still been fun as hell to watch. Playing Russia really tough, would be tied at 2 if Jason Blake could fucking get a wide open shot off at an open net. Damn, the Russians score so easily when they have their chances, and the US just blows their chances.

And one thing that always enrages me wacthing Olympic/International hockey is the soultion to all of the NHL's problems just sitting there staring us all in the face. Screw your stupid little nonsense rules like "The Goalie can touch the puck behind the net here and here, but not here, here and here," and OPEN UP THE FUCKING ICE YOU CHEAP FUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw freakin' hell. That sucked. Maybe they'll play out their minds with anger from now on.

Holy shit was that a fun and entertaining yet infuriating game. Every single chance the Russians had they finished. The US needed to create like 3 or 4 chances to finally be able to finish one off, and yet they did it, able to tie it up late, only to lose on Esche giving up a cheap goal. I assume he was just starting to rest DiPietro. I hope.

Anyway, that game gives me some optomism going into the medal round. But even if they get by Finland, they play Canada or Russia in the second round. Speaking of the medal round, Canada-Russia and Slovakia-Czech Republic should be awesome games.

"Canada-Russia and Slovakia-Czech Republic should be awesome games."
You're not kidding! Just recently the Slovaks were only allowed 4 skaters on the team when they were united as one country. I've been touting the Slovaks as a big-time medal contender for a long time now. Most scouts and writers ranked them really low (8-12 out of the 12) bc they were said to have very little D and no goalie. However, being an Avs fan I have been amazed by the ability of the young Slovak (Peter Budaj) when he plays as their backup and here in the Olympics. Most of his losses have come in shootouts in OT after holding teams to 2 goals or less. For some reason the Avs can't score when he's in net, yet he still has a good record.....especially for a rookie backup. In the NHL thread I've stated before that he's been the best goalie for the Avs all year.

However, now that's it's the quarterfinals anything can happen. Especially since some really tough teams are ranked low in the seeds. Is there a sure thing in the next round? I definitely think the seeds are messed up due to a few teams playing out of their minds and others underperforming badly. I truly think at least one of the #1 seeds will fall in the quarterfinals. Read below for my take on the games to find out which one I pick.

The easiest game to call(you would think) is the Sweden #2 A /Switzerland #3 B matchup. Not any longer since the Sweden coach really dissed the Swiss with his comments. The Swiss will be fired up for this one, but it still comes down to the play of their goalies. Whether it's Aebischer or Gerber, they'll have to be the difference bc the Swiss just can't skate with the Swedish team in any capacity. I have to go with Sweden 5-2 in this game. The Swiss are coming off two straight games against shitty teams (Germany and Italy) in which they only managed late ties. Not to take anything away from the Swiss and what they've done in this Olympics and for hockey in Switzerland, but the ball is over for this cinderella story. On this one however, I'd love to be wrong with the way the Sweeds handled the last game.

The other 2/3 matchup pits the flying Russians (#2 B) versus the underperforming Canadians (#3 A). It's amazing how opportunistic the Russians have been throughout the whole Olympics thus far. If the Canadians can remain patient and not allow odd man breaks, I can't see the Russians wiinning here. However, the Canadians haven't played well the whole tornament and can be in real trouble if they don't gel right now. The Canadians like the Russians have plenty of offense but have grown a little old on D. Blake and Foote alone are both in the final years of their careers. The team as a whole seem to consist of a lot of power forwards, at least more than you'd expect from a Canadian team. Not having the likes of Staal and Tanguay here as playmakers was a true oversight by the husband of the bookie. Yet I still think they pull this one out with grit over the rooskies 6-4.

Of the two 4/1 matchups, I think the U.S. #4 B finally puts together a full game (on O and D for a full 60 minutes) and will find a way to upset a very hard-working Finn team. The Finns never give up a lot of goals since and seem to have displaced Quebec of late as the hotbed for putting out great NHL goalies. Couple this with their blue-collar work effort, and they're one of the toughest teams to score on in the tournament. However, I just have a feeling that the US mathes up perfectly for a hard battle in front of their net and against the boards. I truly believe the US will eek this one out 3-2 on a late goal by someone like Rolston, Drury or Schneider. I picked these guys since they have been some of the most consistent US players throughout the first ro

They picked them on past performances, not the way they have been playing of late. Some of the worst picks were these. Guerin was awful and has been in the NHL for a few years so this was an awful pick. Next, Hatcher was even worse! He was on the ice for almost all the goals, took terrible penalties and even took time to pick up his glove pulling him from the front of the US net at a crucial time allowing Jokinen to score a huge goal. I hate Chris Chelios being an Avs fan, but he and fellow Red Wing Schneider were two of the best players on the ice. At one point Cheli took Tkachuk aside and berated the asshole for playing like the ass he always has been. Tkachuk and Weight shouldn't have been in Italy as well. Didn't the US learn their lessen when these guys (Tkachuk, Weight, Hatcher and Guerin) destroyed their living quarters after they were eliminated in Nagano? Sure they never came out with the names, but Modano, Cheli, Amonte and others all but fingered the assholes bc they were so embarrassed. The rules here didn't hurt the US, it was the personnel and system. One can only take so many shots from the point with all five Finns standing in the lane. This team didn't have a cycle at all and very little ability to take pucks to the net. They had a million shots blocked bc teams know this fact and the US never adjusted. They were out-worked, out-coached and simple put out-classed. Some US players sure played with a lot of heart, but they can't carry the whole team.

That play was all Drury and his effort. Gionta tipped in an amazing hustle/pass from Drury on his stomach. Gionta took some real dumb penalties in the offensive zone throughout the playoffs. Sure he scored here and there, but he was a part of more goals against then for. When he losses the puck he doesn't work but rather hooks and holds and that doesn't work in today's game. I know he's small, but he could have worked on the other side of the puck much more. The best Devil was Rafalski, and he wasn't even close to 100%.

Nice collection. i've got my eye on the Ukraine jersey.

Found the stats and you're right on the overall penalties but both Gionta and Gomez were minus even though all the short handed goals they gave up don't count toward +/- unless you're in the box. Of course they weren't the biggest problem, but it'd be crazy to give almost anyone on this team too much credit.

No.

Name

Pos

GP

G

A

Pts

PIM

+/-

GW

PPG

S

22

Craig Conroy

F

6

1

4

5

2

0

0

0

8

11

Scott Gomez

F

6

1

4

5

10

-3

0

<font face="Arial" size="1

Was anyone on the team an over? I checked the Olympic individual leaders on NBC's site and they only listed the top 25 or so, and not one American was on it, and the last guy on the list was only a plus 3. With all the losses I'd bet that nobody was a plus, and in that case, a -1 ain't bad.

I'm sick of everybody saying that Team USA has been a disappointment this year. They have the single biggest medal haul in Team USA history at a Winter Olympics not held in the US, and they set that record last weekend. They currently have 23 medals, only 1 behind the leader Germany. All of this is being lost because the sporting press has the attention span of a 3 year-old with an extreme case of ADD. There's more to the olympics than Bode Miller's disappointent, Michelle Kwan'ss injury and the hockey team's expected early exit. It pisses me off. There's a poll on ESPN where over 50% of people call Team USA's performance mediocre. They don't know what they are talking about, and it's mostly because of the sorry coverage. NBC is programming it like it's 1960, and nobody else can pay attention past a couple of sports. I really hope that the US can pull out an overall medal win, so that way people can look at the coverage, then look at the actual results, and see what an incredibly sorry job the media did covering it.
Finland just laid a a solid and thorough beatdown on Russia, leading to an all-Nordic Gold Medal game: Finland-Sweden. Who saw that coming?
Mr.Pants
02-24-2006, 01:53 PM
It seems the Scandanavian teams managed to squeeze more practices in. As far as the performance of the U.S. in all sports, NBC managed to pick all the disappointments to do their human interests stories. They didn't have much prepared to say about many of the pleasant surprises.

This is a perfect example of the sorry state of sports journalism today.

The writer of this article took a quote from ANOTHER sports writer to illustrate this point. A case can be made this was the most successful Team USA at a Winter Olympics ever. But this guy had a point he wanted to make, and damned if the facts were going to get in the way. Of course he touches on Bode Miller, but then tries to overshadow the tremendous achievements of Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick and only concentrate on their tepid war of words. Who cares that Hedrick took home 3 medals, who cares that Shani Davis made history, who cares that Shani Davis was in the stands yesterday furiously rooting for Hedrick in his last event? And then, to finish his point he brings up Jacobellis who, GOD FORBID, took home silver instead of gold! Damn her, trying to have some fun. Who cares about the all-time American best finishes in Ice Dancing and Curling? Who cares that this was the most successful medal haul outside of the US EVER? Some athletes didn't live up to the ridiculously high standards these self-rightous sports writers placed upon them. And then of course this fucking idiot who wrote this ends it trying to make another self-righteous point about obsessing about winning gold medals, this after brow beating Miller and Jacobellis for blowing their own chances at gold.

These kinds of writers make me ashamed of my chosen profession.

I personally think this was the best winter olympics i've ever watched. For one, it now seems that snowboarding is THE main event, which just dominates in my mind. Also, alot of great hockey games, alot of good stories if you could find em in the press, and I actually got into a couple things I never thought I would have. I REALLY wanna try curling for some reason
HBox wrote:

I agree 100% H. Did you catch the article on foxsports by the dickbag who made a whole case for not covering the Olympics in a long time and being happy he wasn't there. Fuck this douche as he later contradicts himself by stating he is however now looking forward to covering the 2008 games in China?? And no he didn't make any distinction between the summer and winter games. He made horrible points and just plain sounded pissy about not being there, yet acting like he was glad. Fuck the majority of the writers, as we now know it isn't just the political journalists dropping the ball of late.

This guy who writes for MSNBC is the worst writer I have ever read. I've read his articles occasionally over the years, but I usually avoid them as soon as I see his name. He has consistently demonstrated that he has no idea what he's writing about. Well, today I was lucky to glance at two of his articles, and it perfectly illustrates what a tool he is. Let's look at article one:

I got a lot of e-mails during the Olympics asking me why I had to be so
negative about the home team during these Games. And all I could say
was that it was because there was so much to be negative about.

I read this article and thought it was typical of what was going on. But then I read article two, and was a bit perplexed. You'll see why, but before I post it, this is what I find added to this article later:

And, while there were plenty of "happy-happy, joy-joy" stories which
are chronicled in a companion piece to this, there were far too many
times when the only thing a humble scribe could do was follow the first
rule of writing sports columns, to whit: The task of a sports columnist
is to arrive at the scene of a catastrophe and shoot the survivors.

Reading that article you'd have a hard time believing the same man wrote the second, even with that added little thing. Here's more from article one:

Much as I’d have liked to put a positive spin on the Adventures of Bode
Miller, I couldn’t do it without resorting to such ploys as: "Although
American medal hopeful Bode Miller failed to complete another race,
Sestriere bars reported a 40-percent increase in sales, which they
attributed entirely to his visits."

But Bode wasn’t the only American bummer during these Games. As a unit,
Team USA fell well short of expectations in both total medals and gold
medals. We’ll leave it for others to argue why.

My feeling is that it’s because of those team
hats that look as if the athletes are wearing their underwear on their
heads — backwards. But I’ll admit that four years ago, the Russian
sailor hats were just as silly, and that team set a record for medals.

Whatever
the reasons, there were plenty of disappointments in just about every
nook and cranny of Turin. Here’s our list of the 10 biggest busts of
the Games of the XX Winter Olympics.

Let that sink in for a second. Now, here's article two, entitled: U.S. Did Itself Proud At Olympics.

Yes, the bad news did tend to overwhelm all the good things Team USA
did during these Olympics. It wasn’t that there were more
disappointments than delights, but that the worst results attached
themselves to the biggest stars.

Still, there were plenty of highlights,
beginning with the American team’s overall second-place showing in the
medal race, equaling its achievement of 2002, when it won its most
medals ever, 34, and established itself as a Winter Olympics superpower.

There
were fewer medals this year — nine gold and 25 overall — but the
competition was deeper than ever, and Germany, which won the medal race
with 29, also was down from 2002. The United States may have left
medals on the table, and some of the most highly touted stars may have
laid eggs, but there was plenty to celebrate.

Normally, I'd blame this obvious lack of knowledge on the history of the Winter Olympics, the U.

I was curious, knowing that 2010 will be held in Vancouver, if they had determined where 2014 would be held. Well, I found the candidate cities, and here are those heavy hitters:

Almaty, Kazakhstan

Borjomi, Georgia

Jaca, Spain

PyeongChang, South Korea

Salzburg, Austria

Sochi, Russia

Sofia, Bulgaria

Yeah.

Anyway, looking WAY into the future, a few U.S. cities have signaled some interest in 2018, those being Salt Lake City again, Denver and Reno/Tahoe.

Vancouver seems to be a relatively flat city, and the closest resort to it, whistler, is a few hours away. Is whistler where most of the ski and snowboard and other events like that gonna be?

Well, for one, I just hate the Winter Olympics. HBox has turned into my mom over the last two weeks, and despite the attempts of a beard by leering over that skater, it's really goddamn creepy. And two, the only shows I watch on network TV are on NBC, so that bites. Put the Olympics on MSNBC and leave the main channel alone!
