Tough question. If certain bands had a better longevity (GNR or Nirvana), I'd go with them. I'd also suggest Aerosmith for longevity but some of their 90's stuff bothered me.

Are we considering Springsteen and the E Street Band in this? I know Springsteen did stuff without the band, but I think I may go with them.

It is tough, because many of the so-called "great" rock bands aren't American. I'll add the Ramones and the Beach Boys to the mix. I would vote no on Aerosmith personally, just because all of the crap they put out since they reformed in the late 80s completely overwhelms their early stuff for me.

First, are we talking "rock" (as opposed to pop or R&B) or are we talking about "rock and roll" which could encompass pop and R&B. If we're talking the former, then for the reasons discussed a couple of weeks ago about the Beatles being pop and not rock, I'd say the Beach Boys were pop.

Second, I have four words for you: "Kokomo" and John Stamos.

Even though Brian used studio musicians during recording sessions, I'm going with the Beach Boys. Their progress and maturity from the simplicity of "Surfin'" to the complexity of "Good Vibrations" in a 5 year span rivaled the growth of The Beatles. Who knows what they would have done had Mike Love not been such a douche.

Still, I'd nominate the following:

Knight persaded the promoters of the Atlanta International Pop Festival to let Grand Funk play and they were given the opening slot at the gathering.

The only unsigned act on the show, Grand Funk Railroad played before 180,000 people in 110-degree heat and the acclaim was instantaneous. Following their Atlanta appearance, the band was signed by Capitol Records.

August, 1969: Grand Funk Rocks The World

Over the next seven years, Grand Funk Railroad would tour the world.
I give Aerosmith all the credit in the world. They DON'T make the same record over and over. I hate when bands do that. (KISS and ACDC...I'm looking in your direction)

I loved those two 80ies records that every here pretends to hate (Permanant Vacation and Pump) but, they're getting a bit long in the tooth. It might be time to call it quits and get in shape for the reunion tour.

In 10 years, it's entirely possible that Green Day will still be crankin' em out. Somehow, they went from being a novelty act to being "one of the greatest bands of a generation" -Rolling Stone.

Wow - this is a harder question than I first thought. Everytime I think "What about..." it's immediately followed by "Oh yeah, they're British". I definitely think Aerosmith and VH are in the running. Ramones are important, but as much for the fact that you don't have to be a great musician to make music.

I don't know if longevity necessarily has to be a factor. The Beatles had no where near the longevity of many bands. If you limit Aerosmith and VH to the Beatles years of output, there would be no question as to the greatness of either band.

I gotta think about this some more.

I'll have to agree with the lovely Too Cute and say that the Allman Brothers Band is the greatest American rock band. They were one of the first if not the first racially integrated rock bands in the South. Plus, they are still the only rock band that I know of that started in the 60's and is still making kick-ass new music and putting on unbelievable concerts. I think that anyone who decides to venture over to the Beacon Theatre and see them perform between 3/9 and 3/25 will agree with my sentiments.

The current lineup of the Allmans (together since 2001), which includes guitar wonders Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule) and Derek Trucks (Derek Trucks Band), is perhaps their strongest since the original and puts together a fantastic show each time they perform, with a mix of old ABB classics, new favorites, and cover songs. I strongly suggest going to see them perform at the Beacon or this summer at PNC or another venue if you are able. Plus, the original members sound awesome, and Gregg's vocals have been terrific!!

The Allmans sprang from a Blues base and were able to put forth their own unique and fantastic sound, melding elements of blues, rock, jazz, country, and swing to create a wonderful and revolutionary sound. Few bands have been able to claim such creative influence over so many different musicians and bands. Listening to the Fillmore East album is a great way to get acquainted with the awesome sound of the original lineup, which included Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, and bassist Berry Oakley. In fact, you can also hear Duane Allman's wonderful slide guitar work on the late Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude," as well as playing beside Eric Clapton on the "Derek and the Dominoes" album (who do you think came up with the main riff for "Layla"?).

Even though the Allmans have had some very rough patches over their career, the important thing is that they have rebounded to put forth some amazing music and are now all clean (have been for a while) and loving life and their awesome music. If you listen to their latest studio release "Hittin' the Note" (2003) or their latest double concert album from the Beacon "One Way Out" (2004) or DVD from the same run (Live at the Beacon Theatre, released in 2004), you will find that they are as great and creative as ever.

Plus, quite frankly, I have always felt that they were much better than Lynryd Skynyrd or even the Grateful Dead, and there is no comparison today, since Skynyrd seems satisfied to rest on their past laurels and put forth relatively lackluster shows and albums. Ditto for the current-day Stones, who I'm sure will provide an adequate but unexciting Super Bowl performance.

www.allmanbrothersband.com

http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/734412

http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=userpage&file=content& page_id=35

New York Post ***1/2: "On "Hittin' the Note," nine of the record's 11 songs extend into jams that run longer than five minutes. And the jazzy romp "Instrumental Illness," which features the entire Allman Brothers Band together and in solos, runs an epic 12 minutes. What's amazing is that despite these lengthy meanderings into improvisation, the noodling bowl isn't overflowing with wasted notes. Instead, this collection lives up to its name and the Allmans' musical legacy, honoring just about every American music form, from rock to jazz, country and the blues. To those who thought ABB might not be what they used to be after firing Dickey Betts last year, the twin guitar attack of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks is great - the guitar equivalent of when John Coltrane and Miles Davis would butt

Maybe not technically rock, but you can't forget The Temptations and Marvin Gaye. Just killer stuff!

For Rock, I will give the nod to Aerosmith, up to and including "Done With Mirrors". I may be the only guy on the planet who likes that album. I disagree with Fezident on "Permanent Vacation" and "Pump". Repetitious and recycled.

I would also like to submit Jimi Hendryx and Motley Crue.

You know, if some band with a few chops wanted to get a TON of free pub and be the ultimate shock rock band, they'd dress up in SS outfits and call themselves Hitler. Something tells me they'd be big right away down south.
I'm no Rock expert. I do know that if I had heard that soulful mix of Rock, Folk and whatever else GFR has going on I might have been moved to keep the full half time show on, unlike that bland performance by The Stones.

I can't believe no one metioned them yet:
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Only one really bad album in the whole carrer.
Also you can't mention the MC5 without also putting up THE STOOGES
For the Punk Fans: X and The Ramones
Yeah The Band only had one American in the group and he was a drummer.
