Personally, I believe the aspect that made the Dark Crystal the most magical was the amazing use of puppets. I would really love to see a sequel done using the same methods as the first, but I seriously doubt I will. I'll hope for the best, but I don't expect more than CGI eye candy.

The article says there will be live action animatronics and CGI, so I think it will stay pretty close to the original. Plus the original designer (Brian Froud), is coming back to create the new characters and Genndy Tartakovsky will be at the helm -- this might be a real winner!

Also, I think it was only a moderate success in theaters but gained a HUGE cult following over the years. I know I didn't see it until it was on video. There are a lot of movies that were only moderately successful when in wide release that gained a cult following then released new movies -- Highlander for example (OK, I know the sequels sucked out loud, but I'm accurate regarding principle)

Very cool, finally a movie I can take my niece to and actually want to see myself. Can't believe a sequel after 24 years.

Jim Henson's Studio Readies The Dark Crystal Sequel For Pre-Production (http://io9.com/5331154/jim-hensons-studio-readies-the-dark-crystal-sequel-for-pre+production)
In an interview with MTV, the son of muppet god Jim Henson, Brian Henson, gave a little update on the next movie in the series about muppets that will make you secretly terrified.
The sequel to Frank Oz and Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal will be called The Power of the Dark Crystal:
We have a 'Dark Crystal' sequel, called 'The Power of the Dark Crystal.' It has a very strong script... Both of those projects... are very close to going into pre-production. They're both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces.

Much like DMM...I hated the movie when it came out...(mainly because it freaked me out and I was young as hell)
But having seen it again recently, thanks to Diana, I think it was a fantastic movie. Not for kids really...and there are some funny things in it.
A sequel could be great.

When I was a kid, I remember seeing a "Dark Crystal" trailer in the theaters and being really excited about it. (Can't remember what it came before- Raiders or Empire, possibly?) Anyway, we kept our eye out for the movie to come, but being 8 or 9 at the time, the actual name slipped my mind. So, we went to see "Quest For Fire" thinking that was going to be it. If you've ever seen "Quest For Fire", you realize what a grave error in memory that was.
That said, love the "Dark Crystal" and have it in VHS and DVD. I'm wary about a sequel, but would definitely go see it.
