View Full Version : AOL Finally Lightened Up on the Hardball Tactics

There was a law suit a little while back regarding the difficulty in canceling an AOL account. I can personally attest to the difficulty that was involved in doing this. I had to cancel my mother's account for her about 2 years ago (she said she couldn't do it). After being shifted from person to person for over an hour, I finally had to resort to saying (paraphrased) "I want this account cancelled NOW you motherfuckers! I'm sick of this fucking bullshit and if you don't cancel it NOW, I'll fucking sue you!" They quickly complied with my request.

Thanks to the millions of bucks they finally agreed to pay out, as a result of the people who actually did sue them, I had a much easier experience, when I cancelled my own AOL account last night. After being on hold for less than 10 minutes, a nice girl named Michelle was able to cancel my account. Her "hard sell" consisted of the line "I'm sorry you've decided to cancel your account, however I respect your decision." Not only is it cancelled, but I still get to use my old AOL email accounts.

Justice prevails!

Do they have to say they respect your decision?

I went through same bullshit. But what I did was call my credit card company that was billed every month, and reported fraud with respect to AOL billing tactic. Next month, it was off my credit card and was credited two months of past billing. THose fuckers.

Man!!

I had a hell of a time cancelling my parents account a few years, getting bounced around and put on hold. It might have been the hardest service to cancel I have ever done. I'm glad there getting destroyed by broadband

I guess they must have been changing things because I cancelled last fall and had NO problems what so ever. The only thing they tried was asking if I wanted to keep my account active for one more month to get my mail sorted out, and if I didn't call them back again they would continue my service. I told the lady I wasn't interested and wanted my account cancelled right there, and she did it nicely.

If I got shuffled around from person to person like that I would have ended up flying to their offices and beating someone to death.

The only thing they tried was asking if I wanted to keep my account active for one more month to get my mail sorted out

That's what I loved about my latest experience. Not only did they not try to get me to stay another month, I get to keep my email accounts. All I have to do is go to AOL.com to check my mail.

And yeah... I'm betting the "I respect your decision" thing is probably a line they are required to say. I must admit... it was nice having a female saying she respected my decision for once. (I have two ex-wives... 'nuf said)

I've had similar expereinces waiting on hold, having them try and convince me to continue for another month, etc. Then when I finally got it cancelled I noticed after a few months it reappeared on my credit card bill! When I called they were very apologetic and said they would credit my account, etc. but I wonder how often this happens and how many people catch it....
