Ford Motors will be announcing plant closings and layoffs. I wonder why? Because they refuse to make fuel efficient cars and they refuse to build cars with any craftsmanship--aka cars that will not fall apart. Who the hell is going to buy an SUV with these gas prices. The United Auto Workers Union is killing the US automobile industry!!!

Remember when off-shoring things was going to help the world economy. It sure did! India's economy sprang back to life and now it needs more energy.

1) I guess the Escape Hybrid is just a vaporware fantasy then?

2) I guess the Mustang, Explorer, Escape, and F-150 are not some of the top-selling models in the US?

The
plant closings is due in part because the Freestar/Moneterey minivan
that Ford wanted to replace the Windstar minivan with - was a failure,
and it didn't even make half the sales that the Windstar did.

This
is why Ford is fast-tracking its new Fairlane and EDGE Minivan
and SUV models, as part of the Way Forward restructuring plan.

Really,
don't get me started on the reliability of Ford products. I had a
used Ford Explorer for 3 years with no problem, I use two Ford vans at
work, and I'm driving an F-150, and I plan to get a mustang. I've
never had a major problem outside of routine maintenance.

The supposed unreliability of U.S. cars is no longer really valid. Cars from GM and Ford today are much more reliable than they were in the past, and popular opinion is lagging behind. Today they are equal or close to equal with anything Japan is producing.
But the Ford Escape hybrid is a joke. If someone is considering an hybrid and is that concerned with MPG, they aren't for an SUV. And the mileage gains are small. All it does is make a gas guzzler guzzle slightly less gas. They were all caught flat footed on the real hybrid market, the sedan market.

My Mercury Sable has survived (very well, I might add) 5 years and 140K miles as a salesman's car in the NYC area. I've never put a wrench on it for repairs, and I get nearly 30mpg highway. Okay, so the SUV is slowly going out of fashion for environmental concerns. So what. These automakers have been flooding the market with their product until everyone has three cars in the driveway and they keep striving for increases in sales every year. How many cars do they think we really need? It seems to me that they spend too much time worrying about the immediate bottom line and no time at all worrying about their own long term sustainability. I hate to hear of anyone losing their job/career, but these automakers have had it coming to them for a loooooong time. No amount of hybrids or new technologies are going to save them, we just don't need any more cars!
