Is progressive rock dead? Bands like YES, Genesis, King Crimson and ELP are a dying breed. All of these bands are very talented and have a few radio friendly tunes, but for the most part this stuff puts me to sleep faster than Ambien. Just because you are a talented musician doesn't mean you have to prove it in every song. Are there any NEW bands that call themselves "prog"? Is it me? or am I the only one that hearz traces of Genesis when I listen to NIN? Is anyone recording 10 minute songs? with 17 different sections? Isn't it weird that these "prog" bands have some of the most talented musicians in history and yet, they seem to be fading like the dinosaurs. What - if any, is the current state of prog rock??

The only "prog rock" band /album I own is - Return to Forever- Romantic Warrior. The only reason I have that is for Lenny White's mind blowing drumming and Al Dimeola's ground breaking guitar playing..

LOL - nice try kid. Is Prog Rock Dead?
God I hope so.
Like you said, that stuff is a snooze fest to me. I find it not only unlistenable but downright annoying.
When making music becomes mathematical I have no interest whatsoever.

Was it ever alive?

I'm the biggest prog-nerd out there, and even I agree the vast majority is just shit. Those past groups were from a time when people got into the 20 minute long opus; peoples attention spans are a bit different, and the oft attempted marriage of classical and rock worked [maybe] a couple of times with ELP.

Porcupine Tree are a band people are checking out; Dream Theatre started nicely but went into 40 minute studio song land and lost me in the endless instrumentals.

=

The best legacy of prog is the pool of musicians and who they play with before/after their prog band stuff. The family tree of rock is littered with these guys.

One band, King Crimson, which I mention endlessly has Robert Fripp, who's toured with Tool last couple of years, and is on Bowie's 'Heroes' and 'Fashion' as well as albums by The Damned, Blondie, Talking Heads, The Orb, and a few dozen others.

Their other guitarist, Adrian Belew, plays on Paul Simon's Graceland, Talking Heads, toured with Bowie, Zappa, and plays on NIN The Downward Spiral. His last solo album has tracks of the ultimate badass trio: Belew, Les Claypool of Primus on bass, and Danny Carey of Tool on drums.

Their once bassist Tony Levin is on John Lennon albums, Alice Cooper, Marshall Crenshaw, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, and Warren Zevon, to mention about 1% of his discopgraphy.

Remember Howard doing King Crimson's 'In the Court of the Crimson King' God, the original version is awful, and hoo hoo didnt help.

Mea culpa. Guilty as Charged. I saw Yes, maybe 15 times from 77 to whenever te hell last time was, maybe 2002 w/ wakeman, mostly at the Garden, which reminds me, Yes easily sold out 2-3 nights on the late 70s-80s tours I saw. So, they were sure filling the seats. And yep, I saw that original Asia at the Spectrum in philly; Geoffe Downes had an entire second tier filled with a spinal tap number of synthesizers; at least I can redeem that [somewhat] with a Diver Down show attanded at same venue.

certainly not dead

dream theater, porcupine tree, spock's beard, neal morse, transatlantic, liquid tension experiment... to name a few

prog
tends to lure a more rabid and loyal fanbase than most music IMO, hence
why you don't get casual listeners who are quick to abandon which makes
it possible for them to survive outside of any kind of mainstream
support

hell, dream theater are currently doing a 20th
anniversary tour which is wrapping up at a dvd filming at radio city. despite having only one radio "hit" (pull me under) back
in 91 and they do VERY well for themselves. i've seen these guys 7
times, about to be 8 and they just get better and better as their catalogue
grows. i can't stress how much i love this band.

newer prog is out there. as sad as it may be, you hafta look a little like with alot of good music.
I like a few harder sounding Dream Theater songs, I have "Disipline" from King Crimson coming in the mail as a matter of fact.
But yes, progressive rock is fucking done. You said it best yourself Perry:
Just because you are a talented musician doesn't mean you have to prove it in every song.
There is a BIG difference between playing your instrument the best and writing songs that sound good. I've seen A LOT of musicians in bands that are amazing, but they don't fit in their band and/or don't play with the band. There is a seperate tallent in music, and it's writing. Knowing when to start and end things. In my opinion, a lot of the prog rock I heard would be MUCH better if they knew when to end parts and the whole song.

I love "Prog Rock", but yeah, there is alot of crap in those catalogs. YES is great musically, but lyriclly, with the exception of the Trevor Rabin years, they were pretty crappy. I did see them at MSG in '04 and they were great! ELP lost it after "Brain Salad Surgery" in '73, although their comeback album, "Black Moon" in the '90's was pretty decent. The only group that stayed pretty consistant was GENESIS (which I just happen to be listening to "DUKE" at the moment). Yeah, "Invisible Touch" is pretty much a Phil Collins solo album, but the rest of the stuff is really good. Actually, their last album in the late '90's "Calling All Stations" with a guy by the name of Ray Wilson singin', was one of their best! But because there was no Phil, it tanked. I still think it's funny that nobody really knows that Peter Gabriel was the original singer! BTW, I never liked his solo stuff.

I keep hearin' about SPOCK's BEARD and COHEED. One of these days I'll check them out. I tried DREAM THEATRE, but never got into them. Ironically, I do have the original release of "Live In New York" that came out on 9/11 and the cover has a burning NYC on it. Needless to say it was re-released with a different cover almost immediately!

Alright, I've bored you all enough.

'nite

I had some track from "Discipline" I got off a filesharing thing, so I want the whole album. There are some hits in my opinion and a few misses. But overall the songs are catchy, and again, if you can get past the very long songs there's a lot of tallent in there.

Buddyhead's take on Coheed & Cambria, possibly wirrten by QOTSA's Josh Homme:

This band stinks of lame more than a shits’ dying breath. Ok… Truth be told, I haven’t heard this album. I simply CAN’T!!! Why?! Well, after hearing their new single, while staring in disbelief like a hypnotized mental patient at the video (which shows the singer’s clown wig of a hair-don’t on purpose), I discovered they have the most pretentious… No wait, preposterous, album title ever created, “Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume 1: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness”. Do you fucking believe it??? No really, that’s it. These guys like comic books and role-playing games. Do we need to explain any further? It’s as if this band has absolutely no understanding of the honesty, originality, groove, personality, luxury, obligation, empathy, and sexuality that is rock n’ roll. Yet, they possess an almost idiot savant like grasp of a guaranteed lifetime of virginity. This tuneless, vacuous concept music is as useful as a video diary of the band members braiding dickheads. Imagine, all the longwinded musical douche drinking of the band Yes, minus the musicianship, the message of love, and the excuse of being British. We strongly suggest you take our advice on this one and immediately, perpetually ignore these fuckbags, until they dry up like the turds they are, and blow away in the fart wind of their retarded imaginations.

I agree. The musical growth of this band cannot even be charted. They are treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry.

Great group indeed.

Peter Gabriel's stuff also runs the gamut for MTV pop to some really cool obscure stuff, and his instumental stuff, and soundtracks for 'Birdy' and 'Last Temptation of Christ' are pretty frigging cool, but again, much is instrumental and minimalist and repetitive, hence for non fans, bone crushingly boring.

Ya know, Bob Moog died last year. bummer. His instruments are used by just about everyone, either first hand or sampled, by just about everyone in this thread.

Back in the day, I was as guilty as the next kid for listening to all this stuff. Fortunately, I was simultaneously listening to punk, and what would become metal, so I was saved.

Anyway, as far as prog goes, most of it does not hold up anymore. After 20 years, I can replay these songs, and be thoroughly bored! Yes was just pompous and not interesting. ELP was over the top, "Look at what my Moog can do!" King Crimson, "YAWN".

The only things I have found "Pod-Worthy" are selected ELO and Kansas tracks.
so does that mean that it was "THE ORANGE BOWL OF FAILURE?"
I don't know if anyone is at all familiar with Mr. Bungle or Secret Cheifs 3, and if they would be considered "prog-rock".
God I LOVE Amazon.com. For 11 dollars I get a new sealed copy of King Crimson's CD "Disipline" delivered to my house in about 2-3 business days. I get it cheaper than I could from a store, I bought it from my house and I don't have to go out after work to get it.

Sweet.
