View Full Version : Bruce Sutter - Lone 2006 Hall of Fame Inductee
Bruce Sutter became the first pure relief pitcher to make the Hall of Fame, and greats like Bert Blyleven and Jim Rice were once again snubbed.
I'll never understand what goes through the minds of the voters.

Sorry to be a stickler GVAC but according to CNNSI:

quote:

He (Sutter) became only the fourth reliever given baseball's highest honor, gaining election to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

You completely forgot about Rollie Fingers, Hoyt Willhelm and the renaissance pitcher, Dennis Eckersley. I agree with you Mojo that Andre Dawson should be in, but Lee Smith and Gossage should be in there as well. But Next year is a monster year with Gwynn and Ripken up. But the guys named before have a shot in 2008 and 2009 cause there is nothing but bums eligible.

EDIT:

I apologize. I noticed that you said 'pure closer'. I stand corrected.

I say Cardinal. The peak of his career was spent as a Card, plus the 82 ring.

And
as far as I'm concerned Rollie fingers went in as a reliever, not for
his amazing body of work as a starter. He started a grand total of 37
games in his career, and almost all were in his first few years in the
bigs, before he became a steady reliever. His HOF credentials were
exclusively for his relief pitching, not his mediocre early starts.

Eckersley and Hoyt Wilhelm were half and half.

And
I never looked at Bert Byleven pitch and said "This guys a HOF pitcher"
His career winning pct is barely over .500. 84 and 89 are the only
years that were HOF quality. The rest of his career he was slightly
over or under .500 in wins. He struck out alot of guys, but he was
above average at best. He's one of these guys who pitched so long (22
years) he has 287 wins, but he has 250 losses as well. And that
averages out to 13-11 per season. Mediocre.

I'll be damned if Bruce Sutter doesn't look like a homeless guy I've seen on W. 30th St.
Old age sucks.
