View Full Version : It's a Wonderful Life

Something has bothered me for years about this movie. When George sees what life would be like without him, everyone is worse off except for one person. In the Georgeless world, Nick the bartender is much better off. He owns a thriving business, NICK'S BAR. In the world with George Bailey, Nick is a bartender with no forseeable future. Was this just an oversight or was Frank Capra trying to make a point ?

Mr. Potter seemed to be doing okay.

Should I be ashamed to admit I've never been able to watch this movie all the way through?
I'm sure tons of you will scold me for not knowing this "classic" inside and out, but I find the movie to be as boring as Jimmy Stewart himself.

I'm still convinced Mr. Potter is Dick Cheney.

And to take your point about the Earth-2 Nick one step further, wasn't he a boon to the angel community? "HEY - LOOK AT ME - I'M GIVING OUT WINGS"

As he frenetically rang that bell, he created legions of angels. Earth-1 Nick didn't give a shit about angels.

So yes, the one person in the Earth-2 version who was better off was indeed Nick the bartender. If he was smart, he would have taken the baseball bat that he kept behind the bar and crushed the skull of George Bailey, thus ensuring his continued prosperity.

Nick, although more prosperous in earth2, was HAPPIER as a bartender in the bailey world. Youll note that although he had a thriving business, he only smiled when inflicting pain on someone else.

If happiness lay in money. you could say that Bert and Ernie were happier in earth2 as well. More crime = more overtime for a cop. And more places to go/more drinking to do could equal more $$ for a cabbie. BUT that is not the point of the movie.

So, no Virginia, Nick the bartender wasnt happier-- or better off-- in earth 2.

I love the movie - it has violence, drunk driving, dead people, child abuse, alchoholism, hookers, brothers shafting their brothers, stealing, naked teenagers hiding in bushes, attempted suicides, mental illness, vandalism, sassy black maids, broken lifelong dreams, creepy graveyard, a scene where a girl tells her mother that someone is making "mad, passionate love to me," cops named Burt & Ernie AND a whole OTHER TWILIGHT ZONE EARTH 2! What the fuck isn't there to love about it? I actually find it far from hokey - the hokey stuff only happens at the very, very end, after a long journey through someone's lives (I'm also a big fan of movies that span people's lives), and only after things go immediately to hell. Christmas is barely part of the movie, and the Earth 2 Pottersville reality is only in the last 20 minutes. Barrymore is the ultimate bad guy - the model for Mr. Burns - and Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed are outstanding, even if they aren't as convincing when they play the characters younger. AND because of a loop hole with the music rights, NBC owns it out-right and only plays it twice during the holidays (15 years ago it was considered public domain and was on virtually 24/7).

I'd rather have hope in my soul than soap in my hole...

I like the part when the floor opens up and Jimmy Stewart falls in the pool. That scene was cooler than Return of the Jedi.
