I'm not sure, but it just may be that a lot of people do not want to see young people or people with lives called back into duty (national guard etc) and get killed in a war theat the polls say(not me, the polls) a majority are against right now

I beleive it is thinking more of the individual than the whole aspect....making it a bit more personal...I can see the difference even people who support the wars upport the troops I would think.

As a matter of fact.....how can anyone not support the troops, at least in basic human feelings

side note...does this thing have a spell check

click cooley's hat!

The soldiers do whatever we tell them to do. A discussion of the troops is almost irrelevant. It's about the civilian leadership who we vote into office on a regular basis. It's the civilian leadership's job to answer those questions to our satisfaction, and that bar was very low following 9/11 for most people (policy should never be motivated by fear or revenge). My mother is active-duty and my dad is retired Air Force. Everyday, they get up and do the work that the President and Congress appoints.

I think the statement of supporting the troops but being against the war is fine, and I personally ascribe to it.

For
me its anologous to any employee - employer relationship. The troops
dont decide where they are deployed or who they are fighting.
They are merely the instruments of the gov't/pentagon. They are people,
a bit cliched but they are all members of someones family and
friends. So I support the troops in that I want everything done
to keep them alive and to get them home as soon as reasonably possible.
My wife and I participated in several care package programs to make
their lives out in the battlefield a little better. However, I can be
against the war and men behind the curtain. The intelligence failture
that lead to the tens of thousands of killed and maimed is a serious
issue for me. Furthermore, there are real questions regarding the
integrity of the decisions made be the intelligence also. So I do not
support the war, but Ill be damned to hear that I don't support the
troops.
The biggest reason so many people go out of their way to say "I support the troops" is because of the idiots who have run out of defenses for this war and resort to responding to any criticism of the war by hiding behind the troops.

How do you support the troops?

1. I send elected officials a lot of e-mails trying to shame them into forcing Bush to come up with a reality-based plan of getting them out of harm's way ASAP.

2. I don't really think petioning the Lord with prayer really does anything but I throw a few up in the air anyway.

3. I got the name and military address of one guy who is stationed over there, bought (and solicited my friends and co-workers to buy) a bunch of tasty snack treats and other (hopefully) useful and/or enjoyable doo-dads and sent them to him and his troops for Xmas.

I think any of the above work better than those stupid car ribbon magnet things.

More and more, "Support the troops" is just a slogan that gives cover to the people who haven't got the balls to step up and fight themselves.

This just seems to be a 'macho' statement. i believe more than 50% of people in the military didn't join with the main purpose of 'possibly being able to defend the country in wartime'. They joined to 'make a living' where they felt there were no better avenues to do so. Just like a good number of people who join the Police, is it really in their heart to put their life on the line for justice? I believe more than half do it for the benefits and to make a living.

Regardless i personally would not like to see one of ours get killed, soldier or policeman and they deserve our respect and gratitude when they are defending us.

In this situation Iraq did not start a war with us, as a matter of fact Iraq was not at war with anyone when we decided to go in.

For some people, supporting the troops means they're not activily working against troops (ala Vietnam).

For others, it has a more active connotation (e.g., sending cards to soldiers over the holidays).

However, for many people the 'I support the troops but not the war' slogan is a loose sort of code for 'I hate George W. Bush' (note to those flexing their fingers preparing to reply - I didn't write "most people....", or "the majority of people....", I wrote "many people....").

Al Franken is a good example of someone who is for the troops but against the war - hates Bush, has always thought the war was a bad idea, but spends his holidays doing USO tours to the Middle East.

Being one of the 'troops' I don't feel it at all, no matter where people stand on the war. Pretty much all people do is slap those stickers on their cars SAYING they support the troops, but they really don't do anything about it.
