Although I'm not really into country music, I do like a number of older songs, I guess because it's all my parents played when I was a kid. Does anyone else have a country playlist or listen to it every now and then?

I have

Seven Spanish Angels - Willie Nelson/Ray Charles

Folsom Prison Blues - Cash

The Gambler - Kenny Rogers

Pancho and Lefty - Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard

Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band

Friends In Low Places (a guilty pleasure) - Garth Brooks

Hell yeah - if you love American music (as the Violent Femmes once asked) you gotta love Country, whose roots are so intertwined with Blues and R&B no one blinked when Ray Charles crossed over back and forth. There's a terrific box set of the history of African Americans in Country music ("From Where I Stand") - amazing, amazing stuff there.

And, for me, some of the best stuff coming out today is "cowpunk" / "alt-country," which all have roots going back to Willie and Johnny. Big fan of the stuff coming out of Austin, especially Alejandro Escovedo, who will mix in covers of anything from the Clash to Hank Williams in with his own brilliant (imo) originals.

Aside from that, I also dig old k.d. lang and Lyle Lovett; you can't beat Lucinda, Merle, Dolly, Kenny, or MCC. Big fan of rabble-rouser Steve Earle, and local band Last Train Home always puts on a great, great show - their CDs are always handy for road trips.

If you get a chance, check out "No Depression," the magazine for "alt country," or pick up my favorite CD of the year - "For A Decade of Sin: 11 Years of Bloodshot Records," which has my new choice for the new National Anthem, "Blood Sweat and Murder."

I used to have a tape which I've been unable to find on CD that had all these old trucker songs.

One of them was Convoy by CW McCall I think.

It was actually just redone by Paul Brandt.

They had some cool songs on there.

Merle Haggard had a song on it.

I have balls !!!

One of the county artists my parents listened to in the day was a black artist, whose name I can't remember for the life of me. Can anyone think of his name?

Most likely Charley Pride. He had a monster hit in the early 70's with "Kiss An Angel Good Morning."

I love Cash and Willie, and I like some of the "alt country" stuff. Most of the country I like is stuff that your average country fan eith doesn't like, or has never heard (Robert Earl Keen Jr, Uncle Tupelo, Laura Cantrell, etc.)

Patsy Cline is also a favorite. Beautiful voice, and hometown native...
