I have sympathy for unions, and think what is going on in Walmart is disgraceful, but as I have a Master's degree , and make roughly 30,000 while someone who sweeps a station (not a trained skill) with a GED makes 41000 dollars I have little sympathy for this particular situation. They want retirement at 55 y/o? Don't we all? They should be treated fairly, not put on a pedestal. Theya re complaining about paying 1 percent of healthcare costs? My wife is paying a FUCK of a lot more than that. As for the MTA, I think they are all shady bastards; basically publicly legal organized crime. Just my two cents

My take on it is that they want the rest of NYC to have patience with them while they strike but I can guarantee that if doctors, policemen or firemen ever went on strike and they got sick, mugged or their house was on fire they wouldnt have such patience.

Shodan, i'm not trying to pick a fight but where do you live? the cost in the NYC metro area is insane. 41,000 is peanuts. And that was your chosen profession. i'm sure you enjoy what you do. do you think some fucking shlub mopping vomit in the subway or driving the choo choo gets any sort of fulfillment in a day's work? just because you went to college and got that degree doesnt make you worth anymore than the next guy. it doesn't make you a better person.

I live in NYC, and the reason our salaries are so low is that the government funding is so incredibly curtailed by the Govt. Much of that money is going towards an extremely crooked MTA. as for "being a better person" I believe I qualified my statements by saying that I sympathize with unions. Never did I even IMPLY that I am a "better person". Just because some unions have good points they raise, does not mean that ALL unions are good. As for a fight, believe that fighting on the web is stupid, so I dont want a fight either, just an intelligent discussion. If you saw the people I hang with, you would not think I have a superiority issue. But I do think that someone with an education should be able to get at least as much as one with out. I think that is fair.

it isnt that easy if your life is here....thats why they call it a cost of living. these things get taken into consideration during contract talks. strikes suck...but i'll admit it i'm IBEW. we were going to strike about 2 years ago. i wasn't happy about it but the union made a few concessions and would not give up on the major sticking point at the time which was no layoffs. so while everyones job is safe for the next 3 years, we havent had much of a raise.

If you're a Hollywood executive, you're not going to move to Louisiana. You either go where your skills are needed, or you get training for a position that is in demand where you are. Layoffs are a good thing in the long run (and so is outsourcing), as long as the workers are provided new training and offered job-finding assistance. I am all for fair working conditions and fair wages, but you when you strike over new hires having a raised retirement age, that's absolutely insane. Given their insanely low rates for benefits (1% of pay?), a new hire should easily be able to save up enough to bide them over a couple of years.
I really want to think that Unions still fight for the working man and woman, but being in Local 6 Hudson County Carpenters here in NJ for a few years and seeing our men get sold out for money really makes me think twice about how great Unions are. They're only as good as the officials in charge, and more often than not it seems, they put their own interests ahead of the men.

you can flush your masters degree in the toilet. my opinion on the whole situation is that the MTA has a billion dollar surplus and I want to know where is all that money going? As a common man I feel the MTA is trying to screw the little man and should pay up or shut. As for Mayor Bloomberg why is he in office again. I hate the fact that he felt the need to walk across the bridge like he is a coomoner. What the fuck is with the Master's Degree comment?. I make less than 30,000 dollars a year and live in NYC. How can you get any more of a "common" man than that? Read my other posts and maybe you will see how I qualified my statement. I am curious, you tell me to flush my degree, so, in your mind, all people that are going back to school to get a better salary are wasting their time? Some of us don't have corrupt union leaders brokering higher salaries for us, we have to do it on our own. Here's a question, how much do you think that common man Roger Toussaint (sp?) makes a year? To all others, sorry for this rant, fighting on the internet is like bein in the Special Olympics, win or lose, your'e still retarded.

As for the MTA, I would get great pleasure out of giving a soap bar beating to every member of that board. Fuck those Pataki ass-lickers.
