View Full Version : What kind of a computer do I need?
<p>In no way am I going out to buy one, I plan on building my own. The
question is what do I need? My EX went onto newegg today and priced
stuff out. The cool part is that what eve I decide on is going to be an
XMAS gift from Mom. SO the Ex came up with a few things and it added up
to about 925 bucks. Well I showed it to my Mom and she nearly had a
heart attack. </p><p>Ok well since my GF is well EX GF and really
pisses me off and I really cant get a good idea of what Im
getting and why I need it. All I want is a co puter that can handle
mutiple tasks, have a great sound card, video inputs, (not really
concerned about the graphics output since Im not a gamer) I know I need
at least a gig of RAM, and good RAM at that. Do I really need a
processor that costs over 300 bucks? Why cant I go with one thats like
170? Im looking at a price of no more than 650 <br />

I'm not trying busting your stones here. I'm just asking a practical question. If you don't know much about the internal components of a computer, do you really think you're tech saavy enough to build your own computer?

<p>I'm gonna be REAL nice to you ag.</p><p>Go to Wal Mart and look at their pre-packaged systems. Go to Walmart.com too. Go to Best Buy and Bestbuy.com. Check Comp USA, PC Richards and even fucking Sears for Christ sake. Go to ecost.com. Go back to newegg.com. Check tigerdirect.com. My point is, shop around.</p><p>If you don't need high end video cards, audio cards, super-fast processors, tons of RAM or tons of hard drive space, these things are perfect. They're great starter computers that do everyday tasks well and most are upgradable. Plus you'll have brand new parts with a warranty, most likely a legal copy of Windows XP and someone who knew what they were doing putting your computer together. Also, look for deals just on towers if you already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Those package deals are great but can also be a waste if you have the shit already.</p><p>You can always get a DVD-RW drive, more RAM or a larger/2nd hard drive when after Christmas sales set it.</p>

<p>You know ag, I and others in here suggested a few things, but now I see you expect a computer with a quality video card, quality audio card, a fucking GIG of RAM and can multi-task for under 700?</p><p>You either have to find a great sale or eat it on a few parts of the comp. I still say go for a 400-500 basic comp and upgrade when you can.</p>

<p>Big Moe is right. Why do you want to build your own if you dont want to game or be a power user?</p><p> </p><p>And why the heck do you need a gig of ram to multitask?</p><p> </p><p>Reminds me of that Heinken commercial that went something like </p><p> </p><p>"Man, I have this new computer, 4 GHz processor, gig of ram, huge widescreen monitor, terabyte of disk space, top of the line graphics card"</p><p> </p><p>"What are you going to do with it"</p><p> </p><p>"Surf the net, look at some pictures"</p><p> </p><p>Yeah, useless. Just get an eMachine and you'll be fine.<br /></p>

And unless Dell has fixed their horrendous customer service issues, steer clear of them despite the prices. You'll pay more in the end with frustration and translators.

<p>I'm not sure why you need all that stuff ag. I've done light video editing, heavy audio editing, photoshop work and web authroing with my computer and it's fairly average in every way. 1.3 gh AMD processor, 256 Ram, stock video card that's not 3D Accelerated or anything, intergrated sound card. I can keep Photoshop open and do other things. I won't lie to you, it's not a powerhouse but it gets the job done. I can easily leave XaMp open as I do other things too.</p><p>Your best bet is to buy a decent computer and upgrade as you can.</p>

<p>With XP, at least 512 RAM is recommended. If the full gig is affordable go with it. The RAM and a high-speed connection are more important than the processor for regular use. </p><p>You can go with a processor, where the next step up has a disproportionate price increase compared to increase in speed.</p>

<p>Unless you're running some kind of server, a processor should not
cost you any more than $150, and even then, thats a lot of money for a
desktop quality processor.</p><p>If you're doing video or audio editing
then it would be understandable that you would want top-of-the-line
stuff. However, if you don't have any knowledge about anything
you're thinking about buying, you should be buying an OEM computer or
atleast making an attempt to learn about certain aspects of a computer.</p><p>BTW,
1gig of some pretty good ram should cost you about $75. Not that
bad, but not neccessary if you just want to surf the web. </p>
