With the death of John Lennon. I'm kind of having my own little
Beatles renaissance at the moment. So I figured they're the most
influential band ever, whaddy'all think? My choices as of right now are
"Twist and Shout" which I know isn't an original, but I'll be Goddamned
if it isn't the most rock n' roll of rock n' roll songs ever. And my
other "tied for first" is 'Lady Madonna'. There are a lot to choose
from. Let me know.

Edit: As an aside, and an extra added bonus statement: Jamaican beef patties kick my ass!

1. A Day in the Life

2. Let it Be

3. Fool on the Hill

Now, of course, most
songs were credited to both Lennon and McCartney, but some are
obviously either a John song or a Paul song. Then there's the
occasional George song (Here Comes the Sun is my favorite). But
the big question is, what's your favorite Ringo song?
I kinda get a kick out of Don't Pass Me By.

Great ideas often receive violent opposition from mediocre minds.

The Buddays helped stir that up in me the other day with the Lennon songs they were playing. John Lennon was killed just after my 4th birthday so any of his songs would be old school by the time I could appreciate them, and I never really got on the bandwagon. When RF played "Oh Yoko", it was like the day I discovered the Grateful Dead. Even though the song was for a flat-faced, mush mouth Beatles spoiler, it was still a phenomenal song that I had never heard before. RF are good for that, I discover a lot of music through those two.

And I forgot, not just a song, but a damn fine trick if you can pull it off, 'Come Together'.

"Flying" from Magical Mystery Tour (1967). Ironically it's 1 of very few instrumentals the Beatles ever did. It's Funky, even tho it's the tempo of "belly rubbin'" music & it has very interesting textures, the slacked wobble of the bass strings in contrast to the shrillness of the Mellotron & the corny music hall "AHHH" chorus (def inspired by marijuana). It's way more than a pop song, it's a modern music composition. Every time I hear it, all my concentration is right there, focusing on the marvels of that music.

All four Beatles are credited with writing this song. It was the first song written by all 4 members.

This was the first instrumental song by The Beatles to be published by EMI. It was also the only Beatles instrumental they recorded for Parlophone Records, their British label.

This is one of the few Beatles songs featuring the Mellotron, which was played by John Lennon. Others are "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "I am the Walrus."

The original title was "Aerial Tour Instrumental."

No chains will ever hold that!

Impossible to pick a favorite. Too much good music, and so many evolutions in just a few years.

I just threw "Let It Be" on the Nano. So I currently have 12 favorites.

Two of Us

Dig a Pony

Across the Universe

I me Mine

Dig It

Let It Be

Maggie Mae

I've Got a Feeling

One After 909

The Long and Winding Road

For You Blue

Get Back

It seems ironic that what I currently find the Best Beatles album was done when the band was basicallly over. Most of the songs were done live, with the camaras rolling. Talk about cringe. But when they finally got down and did a track, Fucking Brilliant!

OK I was trying [and failing, hence this post] to be trite and concise, but here's why A Day in The Life.

The ending orchestral wind up and final chord are utterly terrifying to these ears.

Found this on the net, beats me as to how true it is, but it says better why I love the song:

=

A 41 piece orchestra played on this. The musicians were told to attend the session dressed formally. When they got there, they were presented with party novelties (false noses, party hats, gorilla-paw glove) to wear, which made it clear this was not going to be a typical session. The orchestra was conducted by Paul McCartney, who told them to start with the lowest note of their instruments and gradually play to the highest.

This was recorded in 3 sessions: First the basic track, then the orchestra, then the last note was dubbed in.

The beginning was based on 2 stories John Lennon read in the Daily Mail newspaper: Guinness heir Tara Browne dying when he smashed his lotus into a parked van, and an article in the UK Daily Express in early 1967 which told of how the Blackburn Roads Surveyor had counted 4000 holes in the roads of Blackburn and commented that the volume of material needed to fill them in was enough to fill the Albert Hall. Lennon took some liberties with the Tara Browne story - he changed it so he "Blew his mind out in the car."

McCartney contributed the line "I'd love to turn you on." This was a drug reference, but the BBC banned it for the line about having a smoke and going into a dream, which they thought was about marijuana

McCartney's middle section (Woke up, got out of bed...) was intended for another song.

The final chord was produced by all 4 Beatles and George Martin banging on 3 pianos simultaneously. As the sound diminished, the engineer boosted to faders.

The final note lasts 42 seconds. The studio air conditioners can be heard toward the end as the faders were pushed to the limit to record it.

After the final note, Lennon had producer George Martin dub in a high pitched tone, which most humans can't hear, but drives dogs crazy.

I don't know if I really have a favorite because the Beatle songs that I listen to go through phases. In the last year, the two that have been played the most (mostly because I have them on certain playlists where they fit in great) have been In My Life, and Hide Your Love Away.
