Since the flight was from Medellin, Columbia...maybe it was someone pulling a Maria Full of Grace and started losing their shit.

With a dad that works in the airline industry, he's shown me how to spot an air marshall on a plane. They're everywhere now.

The suspect is dead.

So what if he wasn't alone? I hope they detain those passengers before letting them go.

It's sounding like he was just psycho... not a terrorist.

another one of them crazy bi-polar people who forget his meds..

The suspect and his wife got into an argument while they were sitting at the back of the plane. The guy gets up and starts running towards the front of the plane/cockpit to get away from his nagging wife and depart the aircraft. He refused to "get down" as instructed by one of the air marshalls and fled into the jetway and claimed he had a bomb in his bag - the brilliant loon then reached into his bag and then he was shot to death. The suspect was a 44 yr old man from the USA. -

A few good things come out of this:

1 - the man is no longer bi-polar

2 - others around the world will see that American flights have some pretty kick ass security...now.

Perrynoid

another good reason why everyone should learn english, seriously! police start asking questions and you start rattling off in some foreign language and it's gonna get the policeman pretty uptight. communication becomes very important in these situations. not saying in this case but i could see it happening pretty easily...

Knowing English doesn't always help. About 20 years ago, there was a situation in Maryland, where a girl (totally innocent girl) was told by one cop to freeze. She was told by another cop to raise her hands. She raised her hands, and "freeze" cop shot and killed her... still clutching her bag of Doritos.

I'm not saying this applies in the airliner case. Those guys did a stand up job, and to tell you the truth, the guy was lucky to be told 3 times to put his hands on his head.

Columbia + Miami = I'm pretty sure the marshalls were as bi-lingual as the perp was polar.

Good shoot. EOS.

Oh, and as far as the above "totally innocent" girl...why had the cops stopped and drawn on her? totally innocent indeed. A bad shoot is a tragedy, and I'm not at all aware of the story, but lets not paint a 20 year old incident as the next episode on "when cops attack".

so whatever happened to skepticism? how many terrorists do you think will be shot by these sky marshalls? the "weapons" used by the terrorists on 9/11 were items that were identified by airline security and were permitted.

where are the reports about airline incidents? how many incidents were there on average in a given year prior to 9/11, and how many are there now that we're dumping far too much money into "airport security"? but let's all cheer that we killed an innocent, mentally unstable man who really "should have known better"

The guy was an American. In any case, it was a good shoot. The Marshals did a terrific job, and we should all feel good about their performance.

As for the innocent girl I talked about... If I remember it correctly, the police were looking for a guy who had committed a crime (I think it was a stabbing). At one point in the day, the people in the car (that the girl was in) had picked up the suspect as a hitchhiker. He was no longer in the car, but the police had received a report that he was in that car. The police had a valid reason for pulling the car over. The problem was, the cops were very aggressive and poorly trained. The county they served in was very well known for poor police performance.

I was not trying to bring up an episode of "when cops attack". I was simply pointing out that there are fucked up people and situations in daily life. Sometimes the fucked up person is a guy on an airplane, and sometimes the fucked up person is someone who shouldn't be a cop.

Eyewitness: "I Never Heard the Word 'Bomb" (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1138965,00.html)

"I never heard the word 'bomb' on the plane," McAlhany told
TIME in a telephone interview. "I never heard the word bomb until the
FBI asked me did you hear the word bomb. That is ridiculous." Even the
authorities didn't come out and say bomb, McAlhany says. "They asked,
'Did you hear anything about the b-word?'" he says. "That's what they
called it."

When the incident began McAlhany was in seat 24C, in the middle
of the plane. "[Alpizar] was in the back," McAlhany says, "a few seats
from the back bathroom. He sat down." Then, McAlhany says, "I heard an
argument with his wife. He was saying 'I have to get off the plane.'
She said, 'Calm down.'"

Alpizar took off running down the aisle, with his wife close behind
him. "She was running behind him saying, 'He's sick. He's sick. He's
ill. He's got a disorder," McAlhany recalls. "I don't know if she said
bipolar disorder [as one witness has alleged]. She was trying to
explain to the marshals that he was ill. He just wanted to get off the
plane."

McAlhany described Alpizar as carrying a big backpack and
wearing a fanny pack in front. He says it would have been impossible
for Alpizar to lie flat on the floor of the plane, as marshals ordered
him to do, with the fanny pack on. "You can't get on the ground with a
fanny pack," he says. "You have to move it to the side."
