View Full Version : What would happen if O+A f*'d up again?

If you are listening to O+A this morning, you know that there was an assualt on the media that went pretty badly apparantly and O+A seem to be VERY worried about it. It definitely has a Sex for Sam feel to it, Im ont saying what will happen, Im just saying thats the vibe Im getting off them. They just went to a 40 minute replay from yesterday because they are trying to get in touch with their boss (Eric Logan) who has yet to make contact with them this morning.

I'm not sure what the result of this situation will be. But it did make me wonder, what would happen to 202 should O+A do something to get them kicked again? Worst, what would happen to R+F?

Well, Hopefully they wouldn't fire O&A because of this. They have had some legal issues already. There are a number of things that are not mentioned on the show: Sex acts involving the "Wolf-pac" girls and interns, Law Suit from another intern that O&A&Jimmy made fun of because he seemed a bit gay, Underaged girl got drunk and someone on the staff had sex with her, I probably got some details wrong or missed something else that has happened since they started at XM

O&A are doing well on XM, and since this doesn't involve a church or politican it shouldn't be a big deal.

Hopefully the reporter will be all right and there will be no serious fall out from this.

Having a Gov. issue a statement is a pretty big deal, though (would freak me out), and maybe it will have some heat if the reporters injuries are bad, but I would be out and out stunned if this was a deal breaker, especially since XM used to run spots for the "Attacks."

perhaps having oa and rf on different channels would be a good idea anyways. they dont have exactly the same audience. at this point, because it is basically the oa channel, rf just get the subset of oa audience that likes rf. if they were on different channels, rf should be able to get a wider audience, which would be good for them, and perhaps they could get some of these people, once they like rf, to try out oa. win win.

Its totally O+A's fault, I see it that way. You cant argue that the point of the bit was to enjoy getting the reporters riled up as much as it was to get the O+A name out there. They already got one reporter fired for the bit when the reporter flew off the handle on air. They promoted setting up the confrontations, its naive to think otherwise.

O+A should just take a page from the R. Bennington book of life and "Just be cool".

Well, you are going to hear the argument that, at the very least, O&A should have known that by encouraging the Assault on the Media, and providing awards to pests that dispurt a broadcast in the "best way" that eventually someone was going to be stupid (despite O&A instructions not to be stupid) and take it too far, such that something like this would happen. Despite this knowledge, they continued to encourage this program.

Ultimately, the pest in question is too blame for being stupid.

O&A deserve a little blame, and if this gets into the courts they most certainly will recieve some liability. The fact is these people wouldn't have been out there bothering reporters at all if not for O&A. And if you don't think that something going wrong like this couldn't be forseen, you are just naive. That being said, the overwhelming majority of the blame goes to the air horn douchebag.

I think they very well could get fired over this. There's a lot of things to consider. For one, XM has always seemed skiddish about O&A because of their past. That's why they started on premium, and that's why XM's hardly promoted them. The head muckity-mucks could see this as a "We told you so" situation and fire them before anything potentially worse and damaging to XM happens.

My guess is that if this gets picked up by the national media, or a lawsuit is filed in the next week or so, XM will suspend them indefinitely. They've never really given them a vote of confidence and they won't want the bad publicity going into one of the biggest times of year (Christmas) for satelite radio sales.

As for Ron & Fez, they'd either take over the morning show or get canned with O&A.

OandA are not responsible for people breaking the law. Do NOT compare this to the Sex for Sam because it is not the same idea.

In that contest they were promoting that idea of breaking the law for prizes. In this contest they told listeners to do NOTHING of the sort. If they followed the rules then no one would not be in this problem.

It is such a cliche for these officials to jump all over their back too. Granted I am not defending the guy that blasted the reporter in the ear with an air horn, but you have to be F'n kidding me that the gov. of a state would open his mouth over someone shooting an air horn at a silly news reporter.

I want the responsibility and the blame to be put where it needs to be, and that is the shoulders of the person that did this. STOP PASSING THE BUCK AMERICA. I guess I'll never understand the juvenille and moronic mentality that makes someone do such a vile act.
If that reporter suffers even a small hearing loss, this jackass should be made to pay for years to come. His actions are indefensible.
I won't go so far as to say that O & A are to blame, but I'm equally puzzled as to why they feel the need to always be such "bad boys" and run contests where they dare people to top each other with their stupidity. They even named the contest ASSAULT on the media. They're always so worried about pushing the envelope and being outrageous instead of relying on their talent, and I haven't a clue as to why.

is pretty much my feelings also. One of the first red flags I
noticed with O and A's XM show was their reliance on stunts or acts
that I felt came off as more mean spirited than funny. I found
myself turned off by the show more than I was entertained. As a
matter of fact the only thing I recall from listening those first
months was the Tony Danza stuff which was just brilliant.
Regardless, every couple of months I'll give them another shot and
listen to a show here and there in hopes that it improves. Ron
and Fez bounced back in a big way, I think O & A can too.

I wouldn't worry about Ron and Fez, worse case scenario is
they'd be moved to another channel but I doubt this situation would
come to that.

I'm not against the ATOM at all,but just the stupidity of people acting irresponsibly, and you have to consider it far in advance. You can't control what stupid fans will do,so guidelines alone will not guarantee against reasonable expectation of some unforseen catastrophe(whether accidental or intentional). If I mention O&A or the Stern show,it's because I'm trying to relate some radio industry info that may be useful to someone else here....maybe not you...but somebody else who gets it.

I don't really see how OnA could be held responsible. If I understand the game correctly, you are merely supposed to somehow get OnA mentioned on the air, right? Hold up a sign, or stand in the view of the camera and yell something show related, or wear an XM Tshirt or something like that. Is that correct? If yes, then what does blaring a bullhorn in someones ear have to do with ANYTHING? How is it even -technically- related to the AOTM promotion? Did he SAY anything aboot OnA? Was he holding a sign?

** I don't listen to the show and I haven't seen any footage of this particular incident so... I'm sorry if I'm way off-case on this one**

Bad press is good press. O&A will get paid regardless, thus the shocking stunts. I love the AOTM and if O&A punk out, I'll definitely be shocked.

If O&A crumble under this faux pressure, they may actually be phoneys like Howard. Let people haul them into court. So WHAT! They're millionaires. They never need to work again. They do this for the fame and enjoyment. How much enjoyment can it be if lawyers are pulling your strings. GROW A SET and be shocking. They can play animal torture audio but cant harass the paparazzi? Gimme a break. I hate reporters but I hate lawyers more.

If they wimp out on this they may lose me on principle.

Does Ice T get hauled into civil court by famillies of killed police officers?

They should cancel the DirectTV contract too to protect themselves. Some child watching channel 2 may go down one channel and hear a bad word. Better to cancel now before they get sued. Better safe than sorry, right Mr. Lawyer?
FLING FLING ........... SPLATT SPLATT PUTTING THE FUNNY IN PRESENTLY SEEN DEPTHS SPONSORED BY:"THE FÆCES™OF CÆSAR" BY ÆSOP ©464 B.C.

I would actually be surprised if O&A haven't been sued before - not because of them, but because of the bid-ness. Most anyone doing what they do has had lawsuits filed against them - "Elliot" here in DC has one or two suits a year filed against him - Stern has had his share - and Don and Mike were part of one back in 1991 when they called a local film publicist a bitch. As long as the company believes the talent is bankable, they'll ride out the heat (which could be why Greaseman always gets dropped whenever he says something dumb).
I'd rather have hope in my soul than soap in my hole...

I'm sorry if I'm way off-case on this one**

The argument as to why they could be held liable (in a civil action most likely) is that the AOTM program is all about disrupting remote broadcasts, and that they encourage, and reward, the best disruption of a broadcast, such as a guy yelling "O&A" during a broadcast. After all they give prizes, and play as a promo, an instance, not just where someone appeared on screen with an O&A shirt, but yelled O&A. The implied goal then of the program, under this argument, is not to promote O&A but to disrupt the reporter from doing the broadcast.

The question for whether they are liable for a injury that may have occurred as a result of the air horn is whether the injury was a reasonble consequence of O&A actions, such that a reasonably prudent man would not have done what they did. The disclaimers they use ("don't be stupid," etc.) could be a defense, but could also be ignored if a jury or a court felt that these statements were accompanied by other statements that really encouraged the actions taken.

Further questions would be whether this guy was enticed by the program to do this, and did it for the express purpose of winning the monthly prize or getting air time from O&A.

Also, because there is encouragement or prizes, this is different from Ice-T rapping about killing cops or Ozzy singing about suicide. In those instances, those cases could clearly be discussed as artistic speech without any actual encouragement for anyone to do what the songs say. In this case, there is encouragement and provision of incentives to disrupt broadcasts.

I love the fact that Patrice and Bill don't try to be Norton.

What has he said that seemed racist or "racially paranoid"?

i have only heard patrice a handful of times and on more than one occassion i've heard the 'if it was a black guy". He assumed the reporter who complained about being injured was black due to his last name. Then he started talking about "if it is a black reporter" and how a black reporter would react. He just seems to have taken things in a 'black' direction on a few occassions and i've only heard him speak a couple of times but i'm assuming if i heard it a couple times withing them few times i listened then he does it pretty consistently.

then he started blabbering on about the NJ Governor, he was loud and went on for a little while and then didn't even know who the NJ Governor involved was.

i heard him just cut off Opie and Anthony on several occassions as they spoke and came up with nothing funny, on top of it he's loud and i seriously think he thinks if he talks loud then it's gonna make what he says funnier. i'm not seeing it

again, it's just my opinion

question? was patrice the guy who was with the Radio Chick for a while... if he was i thought he was the funniest of them three. if he was i would also say that now he is a little out of his league... or he's just tries too hard

I've been thinking for some time they should do a contest where they play some audio, and then anthony, norton and opie have to guess if it's audio of chimps attacking and squealing/yelling or if it's patrice laughing on the show. I think it could be a good bit, difficult for them too.

and yes, racial paranoia is a good way to put it. every word out of partrice's mouth is "see a black dude" or "see a white dude" he obviously has no act other than pointing out racial differences. funny for a while, and then just really, really, REALLY old.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a65/j3lehane/BigOAPARTYROCK.jpgYou guys are twisting my arm to agree, except that knowing O&A aren't just fools, they have him on for many reasons I won't get into. I did finally get some cool info from him on the Sunami Song debacle that got Patrice fired or canned or whatever. All the other stuff he did the whole week paled by comparison for ME.But for the show he relieved some very big tension during the ELO waiting game early Monday to tues -weds.Even though Patrice was over his head he didn't back down by just shutting up,to his credit. The guys were in the doldrums and getting fearful of repercussions, with visions of their 2 year vacation from radio thanks to Stern and legal entanglements. Patrice, basically took one for the team by being the goon during a tough time.Again,he does not much for me entertainment-wise,but I can separate my personal opinions from what's good for the show.Timing was actually on Patrice's side on this one.O&A knew he had street cred himself, and got screwed by the system, which they respected and understood oh too well.
