Does anyone know when it's coming out? Any info about the game?

A playable demo was included in Dragon Warrior 8. It's supposed to be a real change for the series. The battle system is supposed to be similar to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, if you've ever played that. I think the US release date is next fall, it comes out in Japan in Spring.
Supposedly, it is similar to the Final Fantasy XI, where you can run
around the world and not fight a single battle. The Battle Engine is
similar to KotOR in that it is a real time battle engine.

is it another MMO? If so, I'm waiting for Warhammer to come out
before I decide what to commit to, since Warcraft is slowly pulling me
away from Everquest.

I had some friends that were obsessed with XI until they tried Warcraft, which pulled them away like a bad metaphor.

I hope your thoughts don't drift to me

I was way into FFXI for a few months then suddenly lost interest
after investing a lot of time into it. Once you progressed in the
game you had to have 4+ consecutive hours a day to get anywhere.

Has anyone played the demo for this one yet?

I've been looking forward to this game ever since they announced it years ago, but I hate real time battle systems. Fighting with armies is much better as a turn based system (i.e. FFX).

Not an MMO. I could never stomach paying $50 then $10 a month for an MMO. I've beta tested a couple, but never erally played any serious ones for long term.

I LOVED DQ VIII. I pumped over a hundred hours into that game and it still didn't feel like enough, somehow.
FFXII from the demo was okay. But not nearly enough to want to shell out the cash for the game.

I was always more of a DQ partisan than FF, so I'm a little biased. But FF's storylines have gotten a little too convoluted and angsty for me. FFX was pretty great though.

Suikoden 5 is absolutely amazing. It starts slow, but after a certain point the story and gameplay really pick up. It's been a very long time since I've finished a game and was disappointed that it had to end. I've had Kingdom hearts 2, a game I was really looking forward to, sitting here for a couple weeks as I finished my first run through of Suikoden 5, and then a second run through so I could get all 108 stars. It's just so good, maybe the best in the series.
Aside from some of the bosses, none of the fights are any challenge whatsoever. Add in the fact that you can only carry a certain amount of items makes it very annoying having to discard stuff after battles that you may have wanted later on. Then there is the little thing with almost every item can be equipped on every member. That's lame in my opinion. Every character should have specific items that are only equippable by them (i.e. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Grandia, Shadow Hearts). And don't worry, the difficulty gets ramped way up at the end, starting once you enter a certain forest. And there ARE multiple classes of armor and headpieces. The smaller classes and smaller swordsman can't equip armor. I'm surprised you didn't mention loading times though. That was my only gripe with the game.

It is cartoony because it was done by the same guy who does Dragon Ball Z. Still loads of fun. It's a bit different from the recent FF games with their robots and brooding punk kids. Aside from the all the gambling, death and breast rubbing, it'd be more tame in terms of content like KH.

Is anyone preordering this... I'm wondering if I need to, because I plan on getting it the day it comes out I set up a TV in my office and everything in anticipation... with this, then Guitar Hero 2 coming out, I will be very busy w/ video games in the next month

PS - While FFX was Playable and I enjoyed it, it was absolute garbage compared to past FF games.

FFXI Online has just pissed me off, because I built a THF/NIN up to 54, and most of the other jobs up to at least 30, and you have to put in WAY too much time to advance past that, and I just can't do it anymore. I'm going to sell all my gear and quit once my home computer is fixed.

missy, you'd be safe going to Toys R Us or some other non-video game store to pick it up day of, unless you want the collector's edition version, then you need to go to EB or Gamestop

I have no idea if you will need to pre-order FFXII, but it certainly isn't going to help to be safe. I didn't pre-order FFX and I was able to get it on its release day, however I only got it out of pure luck. The store I bought it from had only one copy not reserved for pre-orders and the only reason I got it was because I got to the store at the same exact time as the UPS guy with the store's delivery.

The store I pre-ordered from is having a midnight opening on release day and I will be there.

my personal favorite is US FFIII. I get confused with this, because some people go by the Japanese release #, but this was for Super Nintendo and was awesome

My favorite is 7. It's the obvious one and I'd love to be a guy who bucks the trend but it happened to be the third RPG I played through and it hooked me into the genre. Every memory I've had of the game is a fond memory. It was the perfect game at the perfect time for me.

After that I'd say FF6 (US 3) is my second favorite, followed by 10, 4 (US 2), 9, and 8. And I even enjoyed X-2.

As an aside, the FIRST RPG I ever played (although I never even came close to finishing it) by complete chance was the original Final Fantasy. I was nine years old at the time, my parents got me the game for Christmas and I had no idea what I was supposed to do or what it was about. I must have beaten Garland and crossed that bridge at least a hundred times because I had no idea what I was supposed to do beyond that. I never beat the game until I got Dawn of Souls for GBA.

Just got it from my local FYE (where they also tried to sneakily subsribe me to a magazine at checkout). I was going to go to EBGames/Gamestop, but they only have the "collectors" edition that is $10 because it has a pretty case. No thanks. Should be busy for a few weeks now.

Is it true that you NEED the strategy guide for this one? I've heard things like, if you open a certain treasure chest in the beginning of the game, you won't be able to get the best weapon later on and crap like that. Anyone know? FYE didn't have the guide.

I have heard that about the treasure chest and losing out on the opportunity to get a certain weapon later on. I read it on the Gamespot forums, but those are so flooded with posts (you can easily see 50 pages filled in one day there) that I don't know if I could find that info again if I tried. I decided not to get the guide though because A) any info there could probably be found here and B) I have a tendency to use any guide I have had in the past too much and it takes away from the enjoyment of the game.

Anyway, about that chest, yes it is true, but I haven't seen it yet so I have no idea exactly where it's located.

So far the game looks good and this starting town is huge. I'm already lost and have to keep bringing up the map every 5 seconds. Can't wait until I actually get an army to fight with because alone out in the desert I was taking a beating from those wolves.

There's actually three chests you have to avoid. I'll post what I know in invisitext for spoilers even thought there's not mcuh major:[color=white] One is in front of the Old man who tells you to get the sunstone and another one is in Nalbina Dungeon. I don't know where the other one is.[color=navy] You can check GameFAQS if you want specifics.

This game is so damn awesome. And its much more challenging than anything since the pre-PSX Final Fantasies. I'm completely hooked so far. the Knights of the Old Republic games prepared me for this type of gameplay so it wasn't as much of a shock as perhaps it could have been.

But to be fair, I've only ever played the original Final Fantasy, FF3 (JP6) and FFX. I couldn't really get into the original for some reason, but I'd have to say it's a toss up between FF3 and FFX. FF VII, VIII and IX looked really really gay to me so I never played them.

I got this off of Gamefaqs.com. I am already 10 hours in so I am just going to say fuck it to the weapon.

Zodiac Spear

The most powerful weapon in the game has a trick to it that those who have to open EVERY treasure chest would miss out on. There are 4 places with treasure chests that must NOT be opened in order for the Zodiac Spear to appear:

1) Treasure chest in Lowtown, outside of Old Dylan's place
2) When sneaking into the palace (Before getting the Goddess Tear), there are several chests in the Cellar. Do not open the two chests in the southeast corner.
3) All treasure chests in the Confiscatory (the place where you get your weapons and armor back after being captured)
4) In the Phon Coast, later in the game, there is an island with 16 chests all near each other. The 4th chest that must NOT be opened is among these, so it is best to leave them all alone. They only contain Gil anyway.

If you've left all these treasures be, you'll find the Zodiac Spear in the Necrohol of Nabudis. It sports a whopping +150 attack and, like all spears, +8 Evasion.

I went over to the store and got FFXII without the pre-order bs. I did however, have to buy a collector's edition version of the game because all the standard edition games were pre-ordered. I'm still playing through Okami right now so it will be a week or two before I can give the game any kind of review.

I love the Final Fantasy series. The only Final Fantasy game that I considered to overall be lousy was Final Fantasy 8. My absolute favorite Final Fantasies are II (U.S.- in Japan it's Final Fantasy 4), III (6 in Japan), and VII. Nine was good, although I was taken aback at first by the really stupid looking character designs. The protagonist has a monkey's tail for God's sake! Final Fantasy X had the weakest story, and the story was also much shorter than the Super Nintendo Final Fantasies, if one can believe that.

Despite Final Fantasy's rep for very odd character design, the storylines almost always manage to redeem these characters, so I've learned that sometimes you need to override your dislike of a game's looks and take a chance.

III will be my all-time favorite. No other game will top that honor, I'm afraid. Nothing in the past 12 years so far has managed to breech my love for III. Play it on an emulator if you never played it for Super Nintendo. The PS1 version of III (VI) is unplayable because of the load times, but that's just my bias.
