The guy I consider the greatest soccer player ever to play the game died on Friday

He
was a man who struggled with alcoholism towards the end of his life but
he always lived his life to the full. He was the first playboy football
player and was often refered to as the fifth beatle.

here is one
of my favourite stories about george best. George was been delivered
some bottles of vintage champagne in his plush hotel suite. There was
£20,000 in cash scattered on the bed which also contained the current
Miss Universe. It is said the man from Room Service enquired "so Mr.
Best, where did it all go wrong"

My dad told me this funny little tale yesterday. When Best was playing for United and Cruyff for Ajax, sometime before they were scheduled to play, I guess in the European Cup, someone asked Georgie what he thought of Cruyff being the best player in the world. In typical Best fashion, he said something like, "We'll see how good he is when I nutmeg him." So the game comes, the first time Best gets the ball he's on the opposite side of the pitch from Cruyff. He dribbles completely across the pitch, ignoring anything that may resemble a game, and 'megs Cruyff. Sheer brilliance.

And Best was 10 times better at his sport than Mantle ever was at his. Not a shot at Mantle, but Best may be the best ever. If he'd been sober there would be no doubt.
