View Full Version : Tipping at Restaurants

When you go out to restaurants how do you tip? My general rule is to take the tax and double it. Though recently someone told me that this is actually undertipping. Of course if the tax is like a $1 or something I give a little more. Though if the tax is around $5 or $6 I usually double it. I know some people use percentages though that seems like too much work and usually means the tip is a little low to me. How do you handle tips at restaurants?

I tip 20% of the bill, it's pretty fucking simple. Taking the tax is really cheap bro, no offense. Aren't most state taxes like 5 or 6%, so if you double that you're only tipping like 10-12%. I'm pretty sure your waiter hates you after he sees the check once you've left. But I have had many side jobs waitering in my life, so maybe it hits home a little more for me.

And though it's off the topic, the only time I've ever really questioned my tipping ethics is when I watch Resivour Dogs and that opening scene when Buschemi's character talks about how he refuses to tip. It's a fucking hysterical dialoge.

I tip 20%. I never feel like just doubling the tax is enough. I'd rather over tip than undertip

It's realllly easy to figure out 20% and thats what I always tip. Standard is supposed to be 15-20%, unless the service is real crappy, I tip 20. Doubling the tax is like 10-12%, which is real shitty.

Sales tax in New York City is 8.375%, so doubling the tax leaves a tip of over 16.5%, which (I think) is fine for normal service. The trick doesn't really work outside of NYC.

I tip 20% unless the service is horrible. Even if it's horrible, I still tip some (unless it's extreme). Also, the tax on prepared food in my area is 10%, so doubling the tax would work here.

I leave 20% unless the service is outrageously bad. I'll leave more if it's exceptional.
I never know what to do when I pick up carryout, though. Are you supposed to tip? I mean, I had to drive there and go inside. They're just ringing it up. I've had a few instances where they've asked "do you need change?" and I've sheepishly said no and left, but was thinking "of course I want my fucking change!" What's the etiquette here?

I never know what to do when I pick up carryout, though. Are you supposed to tip?

It's not neccessary to tip when you pick it up. As a matter of fact, when the cashiers at our place get tipped (it happens from time to time), they are dumfounded. They ask, "do you need change, or what?".

I just saw a thing on the news today about tipping curb-side servers. I never really thought about it, as I've never used curb-side. They said you should tip a minimum of 2 bucks (more if it's raining). I guess it makes sense. It's less work than a waiter or waitress, but it's more work than a cashier.

Here's a question. Do you tip a dog groomer? I've only had my dog groomed twice. I tipped 8 bucks. The way I see it, you tip a hair stylist... why not a groomer? Besides... the second time I went, the girl remembered me, and did a particularly good job with my dog.

I always tip the curbside people 2-3 bucks. That makes more sense than tipping for take out you have to go get! And I really tip the food delivery folks! I mean, christ, they're bringing food to my house! I tend to tip them more than servers at a restaurant.
Now the dog grooming, I don't know since I don't have a dog. But if someone tried to wash my cat, they'd deserve a helluva tip!

I wonder if there's any video on the web of someone trying to wash a cat. That would be cool!

The best tippers are people who do, or have ever, worked for tips!

WP... you are a good person for realising, that people who deliver, deserve bigger tips. As I've said before, waitstaff don't have to pay for gas, deal with dangerous traffic, or dodge muggers.

Yeah, christ, delivery people have to worry about being shot!!
The weird thing is I've never been a waitress or anything. I was a maid, but I didn't work for tips. I guess I just relate more to working people like myself. I hate assholes that put themselves above those that are serving them. Dicks. The cool thing about being empathatic is I know I'll never become a serial killer. I'd feel too bad for the person I was killing.
Wait, did that make sense? Maybe this should be the drunken WP thread!

At least I type coherently, unlike some OTHER drunken poster we know!

Don't worry... If you were REALLY drunk, you would have left out the "never" in "I'll never become a serial killer".

Speaking of drunk... I had to use the backspace button about 50 times to type this!!!

You can get backspace to work with these crappy tools?
Y'know, I really miss Fezzie. But this is way off the subject.
Do you tip the shampoo girl? I used to go to a place where the hairdresser also did the shampooing. I just switched salons and now it's someone else who does the shampooing. I handed her a couple of bucks (how much should you give?) but it seemed awkward like I shouldn't have. I hate having a new fucking hairdresser.

I've never been to a place that's fancy enough to have a second person for shampooing, but I think you are supposed to tip them. I haven't had a hair cut in over a year, though.

normally i tip 15-20% at least depending on the service

but the other night at chili's i had the worst service ever. the waitress seemed completely disinterested in being there, taking our order, and bringing us our food.

and she came to our table twice, once to take our order and once to give the bill even though we ran low on drinks after we finished eating the appetizer.

btw this was on tuesday night and the place was all but dead save for a few alkies at the bar and one family at a booth.

needless to say i didn't live 15% the bill came to around 35 bucks and i left only left 2 bucks and that's only bc my friend didn't want to leave nothing for her.
