View Full Version : The current state of New Orleans

My parents' friends were up from New Orleans this weekend and I got
to talk to them a little bit this weekend and got to hear about what's
really going on this weekend. They were telling about how New
Orleans is really in better shape than the media is/was
reporting. Large parts of NO weren't damaged too badly, with
their own house really needing one wall needing to be rebuilt.
There are two major golf courses in NO, one of which was flooded and
won't be usable for the next season and the other is lush and green and
will be hosting a PGA tournatment in 2006 (sorry, not a golf fan, can't
be more specific off the top of my head). Jazzfest is already
scheduled for Spring 2006.

Obviously things are
moving along swiftly and repairs are getting pushed along at a healthy
pace, but why won't the media cover it? Is it because bad news
sells better? Does it not help the anti-Bush angle in the
media? Or is there some other reasons?

I get similar reports from my friends in Iraq. Yes, theres a war on. Yes, people are dying (again, its a war), but things are actually getting better every week, and the general feeling over there is that there WILL be a day when the insurgents are silenced, and there will be peace in the NEW Iraq.

THATS how people feel THERE. In Iraq. What you found out about New Orleans is how they feel THERE.

Unfortunately, the media has jumped on the anti-Bush bandwagon and wont report anything that makes Bush look good. "people are still suffering in New Orleans BECAUSE OF BUSH" "people are still dying in Iraq BECAUSE OF BUSH"

They report with an anti Bush slant and then are "shocked" that his approval rating is down. hmmm...

But anyway...I'm glad to hear that your friends are doing well down there.

and now, a word from darkhippie.....
jersernutter productions

My parents' friends biggest concern was just rebuilding the levee
correctly so this doesn't happen again. If they can do it right
in Europe, they should be able to here too.
if they can put a squash on showing the caskets coming home why can't they put a squash on any bad news coming out of NO?

Over the last year I've met probably 20 people who've worked in Iraq, either for the CPA, as contractors or as journalists. It's been unanimous so far that things are worse in Iraq than is being reported. The security situation actually keeps jouralists and contractors out of many places, they say, and so some of the worst things occurring there aren't reported at all. In fact I just showed this thread to a friend here who set up a newspaper in Baghdad for the CPA and he just laughed and walked away. I guess it's still unanimous.

Depending on how things shake down, my job may be taking me down there in a few weeks. I'll let you know how it is.

Of course, because of how the work situation is, I'm probably only going to be in the poorest of the poor sections.

However, the homebase will be one of the nicer hotels in the city, so there will probably be a comparison between the two areas.

Anyone see 60 Minutes tonight. They went down to New Orleans to see how recovery is going. The city is still in bad shape. Something like 60% of the houses in the city were damaged. Areas of the city look like bombs hit them. The levees are still not fully fixed. One of the golf courses may be open, but tens of thousands of people are going to have their houses bulldozed cause they're beyond repair.

You can see the 60s Minutes stuff here:

60 Minutes on New Orleans

------------------------------
