I think Marcus Camby needs a stipend for shoes for all the times he puts his foot in his mouth. I do

not like the idea of a dress code either, however, I do hope that having these high paid young men

wear suits and ties will present a better image to the kids that idolize them. Anything would be better

than seeing them walking around in jeans half falling off of their behinds and doorags. Times may

change but certain standards must remain.

The league (and its owners) try to sell the NBA and its several
hundred dollar floor seats to rich, usually white, men. The idea
is that floor seats to an NBA game can be a great way to entertain a
client or to reward an exceptional employee, etc. Basically they
sell the season tickets to the die-hards and to businesses.

The
players are selling to the kids who listen to rap, and are into that
whole hip-hop/thug lifestyle. These are not necessarily actual
thugs, just people who like 50 cent. Allen Iverson makes money when
kids buy his shoes and apparel.

The problem
is that Iverson makes his money, at least directly, when he sells his
gear, not when rich white people go to the game. Although, these
people are the ones who actually pay his salary, he makes so much
fucking money outside of the arena, its disgusting. His NBA
salary is only a small fraction of his yearly income. His
argument is that by "selling out" or by not keeping it "real" he is
going to lose the image that has made him millions upon millions in
endorsements and whatnot.

The league is absolutely
right, though, without the expensive floor/luxury suite tickets being
sold, eventually the game will face financial ruin. The league is
only telling them to wear sportcoats when they are inactive due to
injury, no hats or sunglasses inside the arena or in the locker room,
and no garish chains worn outside the clothes. Basically business
casual.

Yeah, it is going after a certain
culture which is predominantly black, but what is the worst that can
happen? Hip-hop culture will not be destroyed because basketball
players have to wear a button-down shirt to work. If anything, it
will show some of these kids that it is ok to assimilate into the
"white" world. It will show them that in order to be successfull
in the world, at some point you have to leave the whole gangster
mentality behind. Unless of course you are trying to be a
successful gangster.

If the players don't like it, they can go someplace else to work
where no one cares what they wear. Heck...they'll fit right in working
at Sports Authority or something. So stop their bitch ass crying! If
they want to work in the NBA they should toe the line. If
not....there's always Europe.

When I'm at the office wearing a suit and tie,
while I'm in the office I usually wear a sports jersey at the office.
When I go out of the office to meet people (like at the hospital or

back on.

If they made this rule for baseball or hockey, no one would bring up the black issue.

I
think that's one of the points. There isn't any kind of league wide
dress code for those leagues. It's no coinicidence that it's happening
to the sport most dominated by black athletes and black culture. I
don't think David Stern is out to get the black people, but the black
culture is a turn off to a substantial portion of the audience, and I
do certainly believe there is something racial there.

BTW, has
anyone ever seen hockey players and how they dress off ice? If hockey
was more popular you'd see what kind of slobs they are. They generally
don't dress in any way that can be considered "classy" or "professional"
yet I'd be inclined to think that it wouldn't be a turn off. I'd
actually think it would be a positive with the general public, they'd
be seen as the "everyday man" and "blue collar." So what's the
difference? Of course, nobody likes hockey so it's a moot
point.

hockey all makes 1/10 less than basketball, so in terms of pro leagues, they are blue collar.

if these guys had regular jobs like most people on this board, they would have a dress code. their union OK'd it. that should be the end of this.

not to mention, a bunch of these guys went to private school where they had dress codes and they somehow managed to live through that.

hockey all makes 1/10 less than basketball, so in terms of pro leagues, they are blue collar.

The
minimum salary is still in the hundreds of thousands, and there are
hundreds of millionaires in the league. That is not blue collar, and
even if it was, is that an excuse? Dress codes are are only for the
rich? Then why are shlubs making $30,000-$50,000 having to wear a suit

The hockey argument doesnt really work for me

The NHL tried to appeal to the same crowd that the NBA is going
after and failed miserably. The reason hockey fans like hockey is
because they can identify with the players. The average
ticket-buying, jersey-wearing fan can connect with the guys who walk
into the arena in street clothes and play hard for 3 periods. If
Khabibulin or Heatley start wearing extra long tees and gigantic
diamond encrusted chains, you better believe that the fans will demand
a similar dress code.

As far as the NBA, I can
definatley understand the argument. These guys are grown men and
don't want to be told how to dress, and like I said, I can
understand. But, I really can't get too upset by it.
The dress code is extremely lenient. Business casual can be nice
jeans and a polo with leather shoes, or shirt and sport jacket.
Nobody is being forced (by the league) to wear a three-piece
suit. Some indivdual teams require more, but thats only a few
teams.

Like I mentioned earlier, the reason
the NHL was in such trouble for so long was because the fans no longer
connected to the players. The vast majority of ticket holders at
NBA games are professional white men, and they simply don't connect to
the players. Its not racial, at least for most fans, its simply
cultural.

And lets not get too worked
up. These are guys who are making hundreds of thousands if not
millions of dollars playing sports. God forbid they have to wear
a jacket to work.

I disagree Dave...

Hockey hurt itself through greed...the owners got the brilliant idea it was a good idea to generate revenue through expansion, which only hurt the league, plus an out of whack salary structure where guys like Martin LaPointe were making like 8 milly and scoring 10 goals....

Plus things like the neutral zone trap and the left wing lock slowed the game down so much and the players got so big it was hurting the game...

The only way I can see where hockey fans lost a connection to the players was with all the rampant thuggery and overtly violent acts courtesy of guys like Marty McSorley and Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan Marchment, who really really hurt the game and its image majorly...

The bottom line is...the are no "blue collar" sports any more, where the "average joe" can connect with the players...it costs a small fortune for a family just to go to a game...the only sport where a blue collar atmosphere really still exists is baseball...and that's cause you can to go a game and spend about 50 bucks in toto....The fans that fill arenas consistently are rich white guys, because they are the only ones who can afford to go to games on a regular basis....

I was never really into basketball as a kid, i followed it occasionally, but with me now going to Maryland combined with last year's NHL Lockout and the reemergence of the Washington Wizards as a basketball team have all combined to make me one of the 16 remaining NBA fans on earth...

Your absolutely right, Mudo. And as one of the last 16 NBA fans on
Earth, I see your alos a Bill Simmons fan. I check his page
religiously, even though I HATE all things Boston.

I
won't agree that the average family can't go to NHL games. I
think it was true pre-lockout, but it has changed. I have only
gone to games in ATL since the lockout so I don't know the price
structures of every single team, but on the whole the game has become
much more affordable. In ATL they have a huge block of $10 seats,
and the $35 and $55 seats regularly have specials running that cuts the
price way down.

While I'll agree that there are no "blue collar"
athletes, I do think that there are athletes that the blue collar fan
can relate to. Most NHL stars, with some notable exceptions,
don't act like spoiled brats the way a lot of other pro athletes
do. This isnt the only reason that I think these people relate to
the players, but I don't feel like writing a dissertation. At
least not today. So look out for that sometime soon.

The players and anybody else can cry all they want about who this benefits but it comes down to the fact that it is large corporations that advertise and buy seating happen to be lead by white guys that wear suits to work.

So you can have it that Budweiser decides not to pay say 100 million a year to advertise, thus costing the NBA money, making them have to charge more for the seats that the normal fan buys because now the Bud reps arent there or you can lose that Bud money and not charge the fans more and have the players make $6.50 an hour.

Personally I like the second idea.
