Nooooooooooooooooooooo...

I wanted Pierre and Furcal at the top of the Cubs' order so fucking bad I could taste it...and now the Furcal thing is looking HUGELY iffy the longer there's no answer. The Cubs are SO scerwed if both of these options fall through.

And does anyone have any confirmation of this? If it's true, the Marlins got fleeced. I know they wanna save some money, but come on. Even in the Yankees' farm system these guys stink as pitchers.

It's just Dan Patrick jumping the gun. Depending on what the Yanks give up for Pierre if they end up with him, I could be anywhere from thrilled to mortified.

The deal I heard was Sean Henn and Scott Proctor for Pierre. At that
price, you'd be nuts NOT to take him. We'll see what he can do, and
even if he doesn't work out maybe you flip him mid season for someone
else. Or just let him go free agent at the end of the year.

I
know he's coming off a bad season (for him) but this is his contract
year, so I'd expect him to be extra motivated to have a good season.

Plus his idol growing up was Mickey Rivers. Knowing a thing or
two about Rivers off the field habits, I'm not sure if that's a good
thing.

BTW-ESPN radio has scooped the FAN on these deals about 9 out of 10 times.

Report: Yankees lost $50 to $85 million for 2005 season

Despite drawing more than four million fans, a payroll of $200
million plus an additional $110 million in revenue sharing and luxury
taxes has left the Yankees in the red, according to the paper.

The
paper also reports that the Yankees might have to open up their
checkbooks even further if a consultant hired by MLB decides the team
undervalued their television rights.

The Yankees currently charge
the YES Network about $60 million a year to broadcast games, but if
it's found to be undervalued, the Yankees will have to make up the
difference put more money into the revenue-sharing fund, the paper
reported.

"They're going to owe us money," one MLB source predicted to the paper.

The
final numbers won't be crunched for a few months, but it's believed the
final number will be roughly $80 million when all is tallied. According
to Forbes magazine, the Yankees lost $37.1 million in 2004.

Amazing. Might explain why they're in no rush to replace the 50 mil that came off the books this year.

Also
explains why they announced a new stadium, which they'll be financing.
New stadium funds are deducted from the luxury tax.

It also means we might finally see a leveling off of the talent gap between the top tier teams and the bottom. This seems like a good sign that there is a limit as to how much a team can spend in sight. Queen George's days of buying everything seem to be over. Yet he'll still buy a ton, just not everything. Also, other teams might want to take a look at the losses and step back from getting near that 150/200 million dollar mark. If the Yanks can't make it profitable, not many others can?? And even then the situation must work out close to perfect. However, I'll believe it once it becomes a fact/trend with the league.

Well, it gives the Cubs a concrete leadoff hitter, which prevents Dusty Baker from doing any of his crazy "Neifi Perez batting in the top spot" shenanigans. Honestly, I really wanted Pierre to bat leadoff in front of Furcal, but hey, he's a guy who'll create havoc on the base paths. They REALLY need some power in RF now. Still wouldn't mind them picking up Milton Bardley for that spot.

The reports I heard was the MARLINS asked for Henn and Proctor, and
Cashman turned it down.

The Henn/Proctor deal was everywhere last week, I saw that
in
print (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nypost/20051202/sp_nypost/pierredealtoyankshasmarlinsperkin) and heard it on both sports radio stations.

The cash-dumping Marlins have asked for lefty Sean Henn and right-handed reliever Scott Proctor for Pierre,

Then
I kept hearing the Yanks were lukewarm, not really intersted. Then he
was traded to the Cubs. So I think its safe to say the Yanks were the
one's who passed on the deal.

Look, its still December. But it
seems like alot of deals are passing them by. And if they plan on
fielding the same team as last year, with Johnson and Mussina both a
year older, I cant see how they can claim they're doing everything they
can to win.

My personal feelings on Mitre vs. Proctor is that Mitre had more upside and is indeed 4 years younger. I can't remember one good game Proctor had against the Jays with multiple outings to his credit. However, Toronto face Mitre once and he shut them down hard, possibly one of the games Mojo spoke of. Other then that, I haven't seen enough of him to give you a real feel. Yet what I did see was impressive. He has some good major league stuff in him. I've yet to see that once from Proctor, and I've seen him a lot more. Sure he has some heat, but it usually ends up right over the plate with zero movement. Can anyone say batting practice?

My concepts for what constitues a fair trade have been blown away by that Loretta trade. How the hell does a team get an All-Satr second baseman for a backup catcher!? The Marlins want Cano for a slightly above average CF, and the Red Sox can get Loretta for a 36 year old backup catcher! WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK!

Thats what I was talking about before. Its not JUST about the
baseball side of the equation. There's contracts involved, legnth of
contract remaining, balance sheet of the franchise, etc.

And
ANY negotiation is ultimately about what someone's willing to pay for
it. If you need to move someone, and X is your best offer, then thats
what he's worth. Thats how the Mets ended up with Xavier Nady.

And I still dont believe the Marlins insisted on Cano.

He's only making 2.75 million, although he is 34, older than I thought. But look at his stats in 2004 and 2003, probably the best 2B in the NL behind Vidro. Last year he was slowed by injury, but that can't hurt his value THIS MUCH. I mean, all it took was Doug Mirabelli! DOUG MIRABELLI! This is the kind of trade that, if MLB was a fantasy league, every owner in the league would fucking rush to file a protest at the first sight of it. I'm freaking astounded.
I know what Cashman is going to say about the Yankees lack of activity in the off season.

Team lost money

They had the best record in Baseball after they changed the team with Cano and Wang

Not any really good CF's available now, more will be available at the trade deadline.

Now
that they've announced their new stadium, they wont be paying any/much
luxury tax since stadium funds are deducted from that. Thats their
losses right there. Plus the 10% ticket increase.

Nobody
in the AL had a great regular season last year. And now alot of teams, notably two in their division, are
significantly better. But the Yanks have stood still. Thats a recipe
for falling behind, and they took first place on the last day of the
season, so its not like there's margin for error. Plus the Yanks aren't
about the regular season anyway, and this team didn't get past the
first round in the playoffs.

Who says you have to get a permanent solution at CF? You just
need someone better than Bubba Crosby. Juan Pierre would have been
fine, and if you dont love him you send him away at the trade deadline
or let him walk at the end of the year.
