Wow.

I usually hate giant crossovers, and this one just epitomizes why. So much of this shit seems completely out of leftfield and out of character for most of the main people involved, namely the actions of Lord and how everyone treated Beetle. The only comfort I'll take in all of this is that I know it'll be undone within a year and forgotten like the other big "event" storylines. Identity Crisis irked me in the same way. Hey, the Dibny's are a nice, normal funny married couple in the superhero world! Let's reveal Sue was fucking raped and then murder her brutally just to be SHOCKING and X-TREME. Ugh.

This is "grim 'n' gritty" out of control and with no point. It spits in the face of all the great and hilarious work that J.M. DeMatteis & Keith Giffen did with these characters, and for what reason? I think I'll just sit back with some classic JLA tales instead, when these characters were done RIGHT.

Here's a great history of these characters back before they were destroyed just for the sake of sales and bullshit hype.

And when it call got even better...

And a great summary of why this new storyline really, REALLY isn't worth it.

And a perfect summary of why the core concepts of Identity Crisis left a bad taste in my mouth.

Mojo - I'm with you 100% on this. I loved that era and those books. And this taking shit to the "X-TREME" is just pandering and annoying, imo. I'll give people the nod that "Countdown" was a good read on it's own, but ultimately it just left me unimpressed and a little skeeved out.

It was actually a liberating blessing when Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons weren't allowed to use the Charlton characters and instead came up with their dopplegangers. And, because everyone knew who they were all supposed to be, it allowed DC to resurrect The Blue Beetle as a player in their universe (which they did in the original "Crisis").

There's so much out there I'd love to get into. The art is fantastic, these days - the covers are all brilliant. But the two new things I felt compelled to get - Frank Miller's Batman & Robin and Orson Scott Card's take on Iron Man - just came out boring and creepy. I'll just stick with getting my Golden Age books.

Curtoid, a new oversized hardcover edition of Watchmen just came out...a bit costly at $75, but well worth it. Updated coloring approved supervized and approved by the artists (nothing radical, just smoothing out some of the common 80's coloring/printing errors) and lots of bonus material from Gibbons and Alan Moore.

And I'll agree that Identity Crisis is well written, but I can't imagine this new storyline works in anyway. How could they suddenly make Max Lord evil enough to shoot a good friend in the head? There's no way to not make that seem forced and completely unvbelievable...and for a comic book, that's saying something.

I've got 9, and I'm looking to sell them at my local comic store. Ultimately, the only way you're going to make anywhere near the supposed value of your collection is if you invest the time and effort to sell it issue by issue or in small groups either on auction sites or going around to conventions and such. Technically, my collection should be worth around 2 grand, at least according to last year's Overstreet Guide, but when I go to the local shop I'm gonna just ask for $600 off the bat. Ultimately, as long as I can get over $300 for the lot, they can have 'em. I have no room for the damn things and I stopped buying individual issues years ago...trades are the way to go! Buy 'em to READ, dammit! Collecting'll just kill the industry!

In college I worked at a comic book store in North Carolina, and worked a lot of the conventions. Most of my best stuff I got during that time, at insanely cheap prices.

By 1991 I had between 25-30 long boxes in my private collection. In the early 90s I out and out sold half that collection to a comic shop that had just opened in Arlington. Then I sold another 5 boxes to the store a few years later, and then (from 1999 - 2002) sold another 5 boxes worth of books through e-bay. Usually I'd bundle them up (Spiderman, Batman, etc lots). I now have 4 tightly packed boxes of stuff I plan to keep, and 1 worth of stuff I'd like to sell. I also have a half box with the golden age, which is my major focus these days.

Ebay is a buyers market - be prepared to not get what you want; when selling to a dealer, if they will take them, expect to take one-third of what they are asking for. One other trick that worked a couple of times for me, was to include one really hard to find book that I knew they wanted, and forced them to take the crap in order to get that too.

At one time I also had a really, really impressive comic art collection (many of the great artists of the 80s and early 90s, including some rare pages and covers), and over time have sold all but two pieces - a sketch from 1982 of Spiderman vs. Iron Man, that I got at my first comic book show by an unknown artist that had modest success, and then a page from "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" featuring Superman and signed to me by Jack Kirby.

I collect a lot of random stuff, and I've come to the point in my life where I force myself to make decisions on what I hold on ton, and let some stuff go. Even though I would still love to have some of those books, movie posters, or art that I've had at one time, ultimately it makes the stuff I keep more important and more valuable to me.

Happy Birthday to me!
