View Full Version : Buying new computer is this good??

I am buying a new computer. Dell seems to be the best option because of budget and laziness. Before you ask yes I could build the computer by myself for probably alot cheaper but again this falls into the laziness category. Here are the specs and since I have been out of the computer business for awhile I just need to know if its good or if I could find something else better for around the same price. I really dont want to go over $1200.

Dell XPS 400

Pentium D Processor 820 with Dual Core (2.8ghz, 800FSB)

Windows Media Center (wont be using as a media center though)

1GB SDRAM at 533mhz

17 inch Ultrasharp Digital Flat Panel

256MB PCI Express x16 ATI Radio x600 SE Hypermemory

160gb 7200RPM HD

Dual DVD Drives - one being a DVDRW w dbl layer write

and a Wireless Card. oh and one Firewire port, I wish it had more but there was only an option for one since it wasnt the top of the line model.

Those are just the main parts. Now the price comes out to $1137 including tax and s&H.

Now the bad things i have heard about it are that it doesnt have 2 slots for a video card so I cant have dual video cards, I do not play many high end graphic games, the most graphical game I play is Rome Total War, I do not and never will play Doom or Half Life or any other first person shooter.

So does this seem like a good deal?? Thanks in advance.

That seems pretty good. You will always pay more from a company but you will get their warranty, so it's probably worth it.

All PC/MAC wars and jokes aside, I just don't see as much software support for Macs. I would always suggest PC to people. It's simple as shit to get replacement hardware and pirate shit for PC machines as well.

I do like the look and user friendlyness of Macs though. But WIndows is light years away from the WIndows 98 days. I say PC all the way.

Thats a monster computer for what you seem to need it for. You should look into the 4000 series, I just picked one up with a 2.8GHZ chip, 512 RAM, XP (Home edition) for like 600 and that ws with a 19" flat panel. it had onboard graphics, but it does have a PCIe-16 slot for any video card. if you are not goign to be pushing the limits, then you may even want to downgrade a little. i am sure no matter what you get is going to be faster than what you currently have, so it will be a trade up regardless

If thats the premise, than it does sound like a great computer. I think Mojo has an XPS Dell, and from what i remeber he liked it

It's alright. It's good enough to play those games if you don't put the settings too high.

Damn thanks Hbox, i was hoping it was better then what i found out, but
i guess not. I was told after i bought it that it only has 128mb
and then uses 128mb from your system ram, so i guess that kind of
sucks. Do you know any good cards out there for aroud $100-150

Edit: Do you know why this card isnt as good as advertised??

This is a good value card.

Hypermemory
is the term ATI uses for one of its new features on its PCI Express
cards. PCI Express allows the video card to communicate with the system
RAM at high enough speeds that it is used almost exactly the same as
memory on-board the video card. Which is fine for your system since you
have plenty of system RAM (1GB). HOWEVER, the card itself is just
slow.
to change it if i need to in a few months.
