I dont like the Yankee matchup at all. 4-6 against them in the
regular season. The Angels always give the Yanks trouble. And Scoccia's
not going to beat himself. They catch the ball, have a great bullpen
and decent starters. Plus they play a real aggressive style (like
Tampa) which the Yanks always have trouble with.  My hope
for the Yanks is the little guys. Chacon's pitched well against them
already this year. They've never seen Wang or Small. Their only big
threat is Guerrero, you pitch around him. Which is easier said than
done cause he swings at and can hit anything. Unit and Mussina have
been up and down against the Angels, so who knows. Very tough series
for the Yanks.

 Good
pitching usually beats good hitting. I dont know why everyone but me
and Joe Morgan are so down on the Chisox. I can see them (or any of the
other 3 in the AL) go all the way.

This team hasn't even been in the playoffs yet, its a totally different
team from any others in the past. I dont go for the Team history stuff,
unless its the Bosox. And I dont even think that was ever a "curse". It
was building the same slow footed, bad defensive, mediocre pitching
teams year after year to suit Fenway Park. The Chisox have a brand new
stadium and brand new team. And there's no scary dominant team in the
AL to make them fold from lack of experience. Maybe their Manager will
make some bad moves, maybe the hitters get tight. But I'll take my
chances with the best starters in the league. Their bullpen though, is
another matter.

The starters are pretty much all they have at this point, and even they have been showing signs of weakening in September.  Their offense in the last few weeks has been pretty paltry for team supposedly as good as they are, and won't last them long in the playoffs.In short, if this was the White Sox before September, they'd have a great shot.  As they've been playing the last month+, VERY questionable.

I thought Cubs fans didn't hate anybody. I'm pretty sure I made this prediction earlier but I'll go ahead and give it again. White Sox - Braves in the series. I got one thing to say until then. GO PADRES GO!!!!!!!!!! You don't have a chance in hell but I'm still rooting for you.

Aaaaaaannnnnd "IMPLODE" goes the Red Sox pitching.Matt Clement always pitches fantastic the first half of a season.  Then it's a steady slide downhill, without fail.  His stamina can't hold up over 162 games...so playoffs?  Fuggedabouit.  Even if he hadn't been drilled by that ball he woulda been stinking it up today.

Still down on the Chisox Mojo? I think they took a huge weight off
their shoulders today. The whole "Haven't won a playoff game since
1959" BS is done. The BoSox just dont have the pitching to do it this
year. Pedro's gone, Schilling's hurt, Wells is fat, and we saw today
how bad Clement sucks. The Bosox will win a game or two in Boston,
where they're real tough at home (one of the best home records this
year) but I like the Chisox to advance.  BTW I dont
get the hatred. I'm a huge Yankee fan, but if the Mets are in the
playoffs, I'll root for them all the way unless/until they play the
Yanks. You're from Chicago, right? Root for the hometown.

versus Toronto.

Jesus, NOBODY has anything to say about the great pitchers' duel between the Angels and the Black Sox tonight?Angels look REALLY impressive with the win tonight.  Their starting lineup is in chaos, they spent the last 3 days flying between NYC, Cali and Chicago, and they still take the first game of the series against possibly the best starting pitcher in the AL.  And it was beautifully appropriate that Encore was playing Eight Men Out as the Sox's streak comes to a screeching halt.GO ANGELS!!!

They really had every
excuse to let down and blow that game. And instead they grab the early
lead, and as usual the bullpen held it.  The White Sox big

You know, there was a time before the '94 strike, when players
didn't simply turn around and walk to the dugout after strike three,
when the catcher would ALWAYS swat the batter on the leg or throw to
first on strike 3 with 2 outs. Benjie made a mental error, and had he
tagged the batter out, there'd be no discussion, and they wouldn't be
crying about bad umping to make up for thier lack of concentration in
the ninth.When a batter has 2 strikes on him, he's expected to
swing at a close pitch, "don't put that decision in the hands of the
umpire" we say. same thing here.  After the play, Benjie's glove
was on the ground, and from behind it might look more like a trap than
a catch, so just swat the batter, he's out, go to extras, but he forgot
to do that, and Sosha, a CATCHER, is crying about the umpiring over a
catcher's mistake, instead of riding poor little Benjie for not
completing a fundamental play.Then again, we've reached an
unsettling trend where, come playoff time, teams that lose want to
blame everyone else for thier loss, be it the umpires, the opposing
teams fans, or even thier own fans.  The Angels would still be out
of the inning if they didn't give up a stolen base and a double, and
all these big mouthed sports radio jerks seem to forget that.BTW, you think Quest tech messed up baseball? wait 'till you see what instant replay will do to it...  This
is not the NBA, the Umpires aren't supposed to dictate the pace of the
game. Do your job and tag the guy out, don't roll the ball around like
a puss because you thought the umpire said one thing or the other,
because hell, it's not like umps haven't made some bonehead calls in
the past, right? You make millions of $$, throw the ball to first.Sorry,
this has been  bothering me, how the talk radio hosts are

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A CATCHER TAG THE BATTER WHEN HE CAUGHT IT. Not only
that, the umpire called AJ out. He put his arm out to indicate swing,
then punched his fist foward to indicate out. The ump fucked up, the
catcher shouldnt have tagged the batter cause he CAUGHT it.  That
all being said. I still think the Sox would have won the game. It
woulda been 1-1 in the 10th, and usually the home team has the upper
hand in extras. Just a feeling on that. I also think the Angels would have and still will win this series.

*sigh*I don't get to watch these games, I drive all night for
work, and when I get home at 5-6am and see the plays on sportscenter.
Bengie was the catcher all through the Yankee series, so I assumed it
was him. I could also give a fuck less how thier manager spells his
name, you knew who I was talking about.None of that changes that
players have become lazier since the strike, they used to tag the
batter on EVERY 3rd strike with 2 outs, because they would ALWAYS run
to first, JUST IN CASE THE CATCHER DROPPED THE BALL.my point is,
finish the play, fuck the umpire. put a period on the play, do your job
and take any subjectivity out of the play. stop blaming the umpire,
stop blaming the fans, stop blaming Bartman, and earn the money you're
handed for playing a game every day.

Guys never tagged a batter or threw to first even if they caught it
any time. That would be what makes the ump think you didnt. You caught
it. He called it out. Dont give him a reason to change the call. Thats
the same as how a batter starts to first right away on ball 4, cause if
he stands there the ump may think he thought it was a strike. Also, 
how will replay destroy baseball? Its only made football better, and if
you just give the team like only 2 or 3 challenges, it'll be fine. Just
like the NFL everyone cried, and look how much more cryin there is
without it.

Telling me my point isn't valid becuse a) I didn't know thier
everyday catcher wasn't in yesterday and b) because I misspelled thier
manager's name is the kind of scrutiny NOBODY else would have gotten,

A whistle is standard, the stupid grunts and hand gestures umpires
make are not. a strike is a closed fist, an out is also a closed
fist.  the umpires like to "ham it up" with thier calls to the
point that half the time nobody knows what the fuck they're saying. Plus everyone says the catcher knew what the umpire said, and that's why he rolled the ball back to the mound, but, hold on, (opens mlb.com, cuts-and pastes) 
A.J. Pierzynski  has been a catcher for a long time, and what HE
saw told him he had a shot at running to first. I don't understand
what's so hard for you to fathom that the PLAYERS SHOULD NOT PUT THIER SEASON IN THE HANDS OF OBVIOUSLY FLAWED UMPIRES  and take the initiative and complete the play, so there is no question about the outcome.The
worst part about this is I know you (snoogans) are only fighting with

Has anybody figured out this umpire's mechanic yet? Here's
what I think. The first sign - hand extended means no contact or
possibly that's just his strike call. Then the fist pump means
out. I've been reading a lot of umpires saying if they think the
catcher didn't catch the ball cleanly they make the fist pump but don't
"sell" it. This guy apparently believes that the ball bounced into
glove I guess. I don't know, it's all very confusing but at the same
time very interesting.

 Thats what bothers me
more than anything about the blown play. 20 Umps give verbal signals,
10 give hand signals, and 30 others give a combination of the two or
neither. WHAT THE FUCK!?!? This
isn't an art form ITS A FUCKING JOB. MLB should get their EMPLOYEES to
all do their job by some set of clear standards. (They do actually rate
umpires now, so they've been trying but they're not quite there yet) "I
do it this way" is the most infuriating shit I've ever heard. And we
wonder how a player could get confused. That being said, the
Catcher ASSUMED the play was over, and it wasn't, so he fucked up too.
And if I was Scioscia I would tell him he did a bad job on the play.And
they still had the opportunity to get the next guy out and didn't.
Championship teams need to be able to overcome shit like this to be
successful. And Scioscia did a good job with that at the press
conference. I still think the Angels are in GREAT shape, in this series and the next.

i watched larry walker ground up the middle into the shift they have on for him and it got me wondering. walker, giambi, all these guys that get these dramatic shifts put on for them, how fucking hard is it to go the other way? i understand that apparently once you get paid over a certain amount of money you just don't drop down a bunt (someone forogt to tell beltran that) but come on. just step towards 3rd when you swing it'll go that way. at least make the other team respect that you can go to that side of the field.

The Cardinals need this to be a tough series.  My theory is that they've been TOO good a team this year and last year...so good that they were able to coast all season long and during the playoffs so that when they finally faced a team playing with some drive and momentum and passion (last year's Red Sox) they just folded over.  They need a reason to win...a kick in the balls, basically.  The worst thing that could happen for them is if they win the next 3 games against the Astros easily and then a hungry, angry Angels team comes roaring after them.  It'll be the '04 WS all over again.

I think the Cardinals problem is 3 fold#1- Bullpen's shaky 
#2-Big hitting teams tend to get shut down in the playoff's when
you're facing the best pitchers on the best pitching staffs. You dont
get a chance to fatten up on weak middle relief, and lousy staffs dont
get this far. Its the best starter to the best reliever. Nobody
demonstrates this better than the Astros. If you see more than 2 Astro
pitchers in any game, they're in trouble. 
#3- LaRussa has a tendency to wear his teams out. Even his top
starter Carpenter faded in September because he was going for 20 wins.
He just doesn't leave something in the tank for this time of year.

Actually, I have no idea
what the first hand gesture the ump did was.  It looked like he was
trying to say "take your base" or was pointing to the 1st base ump for
HIS call, on
a swing and miss third strike, the straight arm to the side indicated
swing and miss. If the ball was ruled in the dirt, THAT would be the
only signal given. The second signal, the fist pump, is what ended the
play, cause on a ball in the dirt, thats not supposed to be made

i watched larry walker
ground up the middle into the shift they have on for him and it got me
wondering. walker, giambi, all these guys that get these dramatic
shifts put on for them, how fucking hard is it to go the other way? it
depends. See its up to the pitcher. If they shift you to pull, chances
are you are getting everything inside, which is basically impossible to
hit the other way. WHAT THEY SHOULD DO IS LAY DOWN BUNTS

Hey Mojo, what does it mean to a Cubs fan if the 2nd class citizens White Sox win the World Series this year? Especially since the Cubs haven't won one since 1908. Looking

White Sox have been in a bunch, too. They even played each other in

What do you mean "what does it mean" to a Cubs fan if the Black Sox win a WS?  Have you not seen ANY of my posts bemoaning such a thing like it would be WW3 in my SOUL?!?  I'd take the Cardinals winning it a million times before having to suffer through those inbred fucking Southsiders gloating over a WS title.The only upside I can see to the Sox winning is there is simply no greater motivation for the Cubs finally winning one.  The rivalry between the teams and the fans in Chicago is fucking BRUTAL, and there would be no living with the Sox or their hideous fans until the Cubs finally break their drought.  Besides, the Cubs, Red Sox and Black Sox were the three teams with the longest streak of not winning the WS.  If two of those teams snap it in two years, surely the third team must be due soon, right?RIGHT?!?But as it stands, I am so nauseous at the thought of an Ozzie-run Black Sox winning it all.  If the Astros fuck things up and lose it to the Cards, I may have to fly a plane into the stadium to take out the Trashbirds and the Black Sox before either team can actually win the WS.

I spoke too soon. I didn't watch most of this game
so I missed some of the horrible strike calls. How do you eject Edmonds
in the 8th?! I am officially sick and fucking tired of horrible umpires
marring what should be a terrific postseason. Does MLB have a system
where the best rated umpires from the season are the ones that offciate
playoff games like the NFL does? If they don't this is MLB's fault and
they deserve 100% of the blame.

No Cubs fan who is a REAL Cubs fan still dwells on Bartman or "the goat curse."  There's a much more real boogeyman in the form of the Tribune Company that doesn't give a shit about winning a WS as long as they remain the most profitable team in baseball.  Bartman was a moot point...yeah, it was frustrating at the time, but it only would have gotten a 2nd out if Alou had caught it.  FAR more frustrating is the bobbled double play ball Alex Gonzales screwed up just afterwards, which would have stopped the Marlins' rally before it even happened.You talk Cubs fans are somehow oblivious to the fact they've sucked for so many seasons.  What, you're only supposed to root for the teams that win all the time?

that none of the starters even had to push their pitch count up, any
one of those games could have been a complete games in the regular
season. Their pitching just completely dominated the Angels. If they
play this way in the WS the Astros or Cards will not be able to knock
them off.

SUCKS when there's no game on. All day on radio people were
burying the Astros. It was a bad loss no doubt, as bad as it gets. But
they're still up 3-2. And have Oswalt going against Mulder tomorrow. I
still like their chances. Goes 7 though, then its Clemens and the team is reeling. Then they're fucked.

i've played baseball alot, even played in a league with college players and a few has beens and never will be's. alot of them had really good arms. we had a kid on our team that threw in the low 90's. i'm watching this bobby jenks kid throw...how the fuck does a catcher catch a 102mph pitch (said he hit it earlier in the year) i mean do you put your glove in the general location and hope the ball finds it?

This is definetly one of the best World Series ever, at least of the
one's I have seen.  I had the Sox big first two games and now
shittin' cause I have an indecent amount on the Astro's tonight. 
Odds were 8-9 too.  
 On a side note.  You pay BIG money for the
stud and games always get decided with the pen.  Win or lose I
wasn't going against Oswalt in this spot.My nerves have been ravaged tonight.

excited for ANYTHING! They are worse than Red Sox fans were in the
worst days of the curse, when everything would get quiet at Fenway when
the there was the slightest of bad signs when they were playign the
Yanks. Hell, at least you could understand the Red Sox fans doing that
after being burned so many times for so long. Astros fans act like they
think their team has no chance.

forget the HUGE game he blew against Philly at the end of the season at
a crucial point, almost cost them a playoff berth.  I was one of
those people that thought Lidge had actually surpassed Rivera. 
What he has done in the past month is just unforgivable.
