Bennett, on his radio show, "Morning in America," was answering a
caller's question when he took issue with the hypothesis put forth in a
recent book that one reason crime is down is that abortion is up.

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime,
you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black
baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," said Bennett,
author of "The Book of Virtues."

He went on to call that "an impossible, ridiculous and morally
reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these
far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think,
tricky."

it's one thing to get outraged when rush limbaugh makes some stupid
comments as a football commentator, but i'm going to defend bennet for
this one. he was responding to the supposed
abortion/declining-crime-rate connection and he made a true statement.For
instance, I could say, "if we killed every black person in America, our
prison population would decline by 65%." It's a true statement. He
wasn't laughing when he made his abortion comment, he didn't say he
considered it a justifiable position for one to take, but it would have
that effect. this is exactly the kind of candor i'd like to see more
of: politicians making true but unpopular comments. We can't even get
our ex-cokehead president to say, "Marijuana? Not that bad!" and it's
exactly because of knee-jerk reactions like this.

I'm not a big fan of Bennett, but  think the reaction to his
comments has been unfair. Especially since nobody ever bothered to put
them in context. Caller: I noticed the national media, you know, they talk a lot
about the loss of revenue, or the inability of the government to fund
Social Security, and I was curious, and I've read articles in recent
months here, that the abortions that have happened since Roe v. Wade,
the lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last
30-something years, could fund Social Security as we know it today. And
the media just doesn't--never touches this at all.

He unneccessarily and out of nowhere and for no
reason injected race into the argument made in Freakonomics. And
lets not forget that he says that he thinks the hypothesis in
Freakonomics is wrong, that abortion being up does not contribute to a
declining crime rate. Then he turns around immediately and says that
aborting all black babies would reduce crime. That's obvious racism
IMO.

And what he was alluding to with the race angle is the stat we've all
heard, that one third of Black males 18-35 are in jail or on probation.
Stats are stats, they dont make you racist. If you were to condemn ALL
blacks because of that stat, you would be racist. And he was careful to
point out that out. Maybe there's racism in our justice system, but
those are the #'s we have to work with.

He dismisses the argument that a higher abortion
rate equals a lower crime rate, when abortions are performed at higher
rates with people at lower incomes and when crime rates are higher with
people with lower incomes, but then states that just aborting every
black child would definitely lower the crime rate. There's only one
thing different between each situation.

Bennett-Bad argument, caller. If you want to go down the social
engineering road, you could abort all babies in high crime areas to
lower crime. Which is wrong. So just deal with abortion on its own
merits.   He said it to disprove the caller's point. He was referring to something he disagreed with, not agreed with. Plus again, he's totally against all abortion. Does anyone really think he was advocating this?

if one of every 300 pregnancies is terminated, you'd need some real
good data to draw that kind of conclusion. However, if you killed ALL
the babies in a high crime community, you'd be certain to have a larger
impact.

Bennett's defense is that he was making a complex rational argument that his critics are oversimplifying and taking out of context in order to attack him. Problem is, that's what he was doing by injecting the simplistic factoid that blacks commit more crimes into an argument that had nothing to do with race. He says what he said was factually correct, so it wasn't racist. But his statement boiled down to a simple: blacks=crime, which ignores all of the complexity of that issue. For example: blacks live in poverty at double the rate of whites, but he ignores the known relationship between poverty and crime. According to Justice Dpt. studies blacks are more likely to be sentenced to prison for the same crime and given the same criminal history than whites. I've seen academic studies that show a 6-1 rate of black-white punishment with all else being equal. Bennett conveniently ignores this factor in his "metaphor" about blacks and crime, which we can assume was based on the higher incarceration rate of blacks to whites. I'm sure this wasn't the craziest or most racist thing that Bennett has said on his radio show, and that most of the people crying out about this comment would never had known this was said if someone hadn't already cried about it and made it a "media issue." But the reason this comment is racist is because he used a discussion to inject an insult-by-generalization against blacks into his show and then gets sand in his vagina because people are doing the same thing to him over it. I've been listening to this piece of shit spew this half-rational horseshit for years now, and this is just a part of how he makes his living - selling his ideology for cash. And part of his ideology is holding the presumption that blacks are, by nature, criminals. The point is always driven home by the Limbaughs, Hannitys, and Bennetts that blacks commit more crimes, but the facts about the data used to base this truism on and the long-understood reasons for such phenomenon are scrupulously avoided. THAT'S why this is an example of Bennett's racism, and an example of a hundred others just like him who are paid to spew this shit on the air.

parallel to a argument posed to him by a caller who he disagreed with.
He would have been much better off using the old saw "Well sure, and if
you cut off everyone's hands there'd be less stealing, but we dont do
that in a civilized society" But old saws are frowned upon in
Washington. Everyone's supposed to be original and sooo glib. I'll
agree with you on this. Race shouldn't matter at all on crime. And I'm
not even sure we should use even use race based stats. Its more useful
to look at poverty rates, single motherhood, and how often you watch
the "Sopranos" as statistics. Who cares what race the person is, look
at the root causes and try to deal with them. Or even better, do what
most people in Washington do, ignore them and go fuck the

his ideology is holding the presumption that blacks are, by nature,
criminals. The point is always driven home by the Limbaughs, Hannitys,
and Bennetts that blacks commit more crimes, but the facts about the
data used to base this truism on and the long-understood reasons for
such phenomenon are scrupulously avoided. THAT'S why this is an example
of Bennett's racism, and an example of a hundred others just like him
who are paid to spew this shit on the air.

I think that charge held
up better a generation ago, when Reagan and Bush 1 were in office. But
GW has more minorites in high ranking and inner circle positions than
any of his predecessors. So the "Republicans are racists" charge really
doesn't stick anymore. You might be reading in things that aren't
there, I dont know. Give me some quotes and their context. BTW- I cant take Rush and Sean either.

For what it's worth, if you got rid of the entired black population, you'd be getting rid of 13% of the US population.  Disregarding percentages, of course crime would go down!!  I would imagine that the amount of crime to the amount of people would stay the same, though.

So the "Republicans are racists" charge really doesn't stick anymore. I'm NOT talking about republicans. I'm talking about the ideologues, and especially the extremists who have come to dominate politics in the media. I think conservative ideology has become increasingly extremist over the last 15 or 20 years because it has proved to be a very lucrative industry. Along with that fact has been an increasing mainstreaming of the extremists (Coulter on the cover of TIME a couple months ago, and Hannity and others, that even mainstream republicans hate, having their own television shows, for example). But there is still a traditional republican core out there somewhere, and, in fact, they are going to have to be the salvation of this country from the extremists on the right and in this administration because the democrats and the left are a fucking joke. Last time they won an election was, what, 1996? It's up to the Chuck Hagels, Arlen Spectors, John McCains, Richard Lugars and the John Warners to save this country from their so-called bases.
